Hidden line elevations don't show hatch background fill

My elevations in hidden line mode do not show the hatch background colour fill.  

 

After some researching and reading other forum topics this appears to just be intended behaviour - but why have that as a feature in the first place if it doesn't work?

 

I need the elevation to be a vector drawing and would like to add colour without just using the annotation layer.

 

I don't understand why this is not a feature?

I had the same issue and you have probably come across my own forum post related to this topic. Unfortunately it cannot be achieved.
