rudybeuc@gmail.com
Ok, been down a rabbit hole since early this morning trying to create this. Not successful yet. How would anyone here create this kind of railing? Thanks, Rudy Beuc Edited October 25 by rudybeuc@gmail.com Quote Link to comment

Jeff Prince
You can use the Railing Tool to get the general shape, you're just not going to get those 45 degree edges on the In Fill bars. I also don't think you are going to get the posts to be proud of the handrail. The Bars and the Frame can be horizontally offset to get that layered look. If you require and exact match to your photos, you'll have to model it the old fashioned way, by asking @VIRTUALENVIRONS to do it for you 🙂 Quote Link to comment
Tom W.
I'm pretty sure you could make this using the Fence tool because you can use a 3D symbol for the infill (therefore can have the bevelled ends to the spindles). Likewise you can use symbols for the posts so they can be whatever you want as well. 1 Quote Link to comment

I've got stairs to deal with and don't think I can attach a fence to them. Thanks, Rudy Beuc Quote Link to comment

It's the rest of the system I'm flaying at now. The railing tool needs some work.... Thanks, Rudy Beuc Quote Link to comment

It is best if you can to struggle through the various processes on your own to make objects without the help of the forum. How did you end up making the post? I would have used the sweep command setting the start angle to 45 and the segments to 90 degrees. The system will still try to smooth the post when rendered giving it an odd look. Turning into a generic solid will fix this, but you can still use tools like fillet, etc. 1 Quote Link to comment

V quick mock-up using one of my existing Fences: Gravity button sends the Fence to the surface of the Stair. 1 Quote Link to comment

I'll post a sample when I've got this all figured out. Got the basic railing done, now have to work on the stair railing and guard. Below is a short video on two methods I would use to make the post, they are quite easy. The second method introduces NURBS tools. Quote Link to comment
TomKen
As @Tom W. said you can do this with the fence tool. In the attached image I used the already provided VW fence components, but you can just make your own and use them. I spent about 10 minutes playing around to get this. Quote Link to comment
rudybeuc@gmail.com
Ok all, Project is done, I have some time, so here's the results. Attached is one sheet of the project. 1. I wish a custom post would not set the height of the guardrail. I wish that could be set completely independently. 2. I wish there was a tab on the railing style pallet where I could add and specify rail and post components individually, much like wall components. Each component would have it's own editable attributes. 3. I wish there was a follow stair slope option and infill object did not react the way they do when a start or end post option is unchecked. I had to mask over some things in the viewport annotation space to achieve the results I desired. 4. Grouped objects within a custom post do not maintain appropriate elevation when attached to a stair. I had to make them one solid object to get the desired results.
