Please remove the second click (new to 2025) required for placing hoists

AStein

Question

Pre 2025, you'd click once and a hoist would be placed. You'd added this second click and is costing me hours.

No rigger ever wanted to angle these symbols. It's a sign that they were too lazy to take the angle back out when they rotated a larger system. If we want to rotate these symbols for some reason we can select the ones we want and rotate them in the OIP.

But my life revolves getting bad drawings far after the deadline and having to place hundreds of hoists in asymmetric and non-repeatable ways so this second click and having to aim an angle is pretty horrible for me and (I'd imagine) every rigger. I understand that LX comes first, but I doubt they'll miss this. Please.

Double click? Just like you would do with symbols if you don’t want to rotate. Can’t imaging a double click costing anyone hours.

Hello, thanks for your feedback.  The original goal of this change was to standardize the way that the tool worked to allow for insertion and rotation without needing to edit them in the OIP after insertion.  But we understand that this extra click is undesirable and I'm sorry this is causing you a lot of extra work.  We're going to change this in an upcoming update of 2025.

We plan to add new modes for single click and distributed insertion mode, similar to what we have for the lighting device insertion tool.  You'll be able to insert the hoist with a single click, or create multiple hoists with a two click operation, setting the number you want in the mode bar and then using the two clicks to specify the line that you want the hoists distributed along.

Hope this will speed up your workflow again and please keep the ideas and feedback coming!

Can we just standardize having a mode group for all insertion tools to choose either single click insertion (no rotation) or two click insertion (the classic way)? For example:

I'd love the regular Symbol Insertion tool to have a single-click option.

I'd love Drawing Labels to have a single-click option. How often are we rotating Drawing Labels? It's easy enough to rotate them after the fact when occasionally needed. (If anything, I'd prefer the second click to determine the Control Point length, which I am always changing after the fact.)

I'd love Reference Markers to have a two-click option, as the little bubbles with triangle shapes that are common in entertainment drafting are always angled to be parallel to the wall they're pointing at.

Etc.

In response to anyone who says "it's just a click," many of us are repeating the same operations hundreds or thousands of times per week, so it truly adds up.

In all my years of VW drafting I have never thought of the two click proces of inserting symbols and lighting devices as time consuming. And a simple double click is my habit of inserting without rotating. I can not imagine a double click to consume any time at all.

Speaking of inserting hoist objects....Why is it that in 2025, we can no longer double click on our hoist symbol in the resource manager and have the hoist tool activate AND the symbol we double clicked on become active? Now, every time I double click on a hoist in the resource manager, I have to THEN go up to the mode bar and  reselect which hoist I want to use from the tool's drop down "resource manager".  Talk about time consuming....yeesh.  Is there something I am doing wrong?

Me too big time. Has there ever been a Wish/VE for this?

I will second this question.  If you have created a VE for this or submitted something to the road map please let me know, send me the VE, and I will make sure these get to the right engineers.  Each tool is implemented individually, so over the years as things evolve sometimes the "standard tool behavior" changes and older tools need to catch up.  I can see how these simple modes would be helpful for users to reduce clicks.

I will do it now because every time I use a Reference Marker I have to rotate it manually in the OIP which takes several tries as you're entering an angle + it's impossible to gauge exactly what angle in degrees you want the marker to be pointing. I use reference markers to identify in plan drawings where the viewpoints are for 3D viewports. I never thought to make an enhancement request for some reason.

This is a bug with the hoist tool that will be fixed in update 2, sorry about that I know that it's annoying.  If you already submitted a bug for this, please send me the bug number and I will resolve it appropriately.

Time? Who said anything about time?

My carpal tunnel wants to talk with you 😉

500 clicks vs 1000 clicks is a big difference. Not sure why anyone would be contrarian on that.

Unnecessary extra clicks are such a bane.

The topic starter said something about time and you said ‘it adds up’  so my response was consecutive to both.
