Instrument Summary

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm trying to find a better workflow with the new tools.

I'm writing this post because, after updating to Vectorworks 2024, creating a simple lighting equipment summary or symbol legend has become more complicated.

In both the 2024 Spotlight Essentials (25/09/2024) and the 2023 versions, this topic is not clearly addressed.

The best I can achieve right now looks like this with the Equipment Summary tool.

This tool doesn’t look great. Despite adjusting all the margin settings I could find, the content is not centred within the text box.

I don't want the summary to show the wattage of each fixture, but I would like to include the DMX Mode, something that doesn’t seem to be available for selection.

Another important point would be the ability to apply a Data Visualization module.

Vectorworks developed this feature to avoid having to colour the symbols manually, but I still haven’t been able to apply anything that offers these characteristics.

What is the best way to create a simple legend for our lighting plots?

This should be helpful for data viz and color coding.

Hello Scooth,

First of all, thank you once again for your help!

I was already familiar with your post; I even left a comment there 😄. I probably didn’t explain myself well earlier.

I can use the Data Visualization feature in the current Equipment Summary Key tool. What I was trying to say is that, despite this tool exists, it’s not flexible enough for us to customize it with other information (power, dmx mode, User Filedss, etc...) or to adjust the layout satisfactorily. Moreover, the other methods I see for creating an equipment summary don’t allow the use of Data Visualization.

It would be great to have something more flexible. But until that exists, I would love to know if anyone could share their method.

LS BB 26 Round Table Light Plot.pdfHello,

I am having a new issue with the Instrument Summary Key. The file was started in VW 2023, but now in 2024.  After updating the file for the new season I went to update the instrument summary and all the text inside the key vanished. I've tinkered with different classes and fonts, but nothing. I can't make it appear on screen or in a PDF. Any ideas?

Can you create a sample layout of what you're trying to do? It would be helpful for future planning.

Thanks, Scott

@Scott C. Parker I'm going to do here a tutorial of something that was the closest I could to what I would like to have (although things are missing) that I can't do. I hope this tutorial helps some users.
Things I couldn't do:

- Sort fixture types by my preference.

- Make a filtered list for each viewport.

Is there a way to implement these two points in a worksheet made this way?

Make a legend:

About the report that I make:

Anyone can explain how I can filter this by viewport the last report that I described?

Make a custom order to the fixtures I think will not be possible unfortunately.

@Scott C. Parker on my last post you have an explample that a legend with good look and good information.

- Two views for fixtures (with DataViz applied)

- Dmx mode of the fixtures

- Name

- amount

- filter by viewport

A good tool for make this legends It should allow you to add all the fields of a Lighting Device to the legend.

Plus feature: possible to add some custom devices with same fields

PE: fixtures custom from projects/bands/artist, fixtures that don’t exist on libraries.

For the Worksheet version you could possibly name the VP Crop Object and use the Location (LOC) criteria and see if that will give you what you need.

Sorry, I didn't understand!
Can you explain better?

Sorry for the delay.

One of the criteria possibilities is the Location  (LOC) of an object. You can use a named object (Space, Rectangle, Circle, Polygon, Polyline) and the criteria will only return objects that are "entirely" within that object. In combination with your other database criteria the LOC may allow you to only return the object from that one viewport. Make (or use the existing) Crop object and give it a name in the OIP. Then edit the criteria to use that Location as part of the database criteria.

Ask again if still not clear enough.
