Curtis M
Beginner here, but I haven't been able to find this answer on the newly split Fence/Rail tools. I am using the Fence tool in 2024, and I have created my own fence style starting with a Unstyled Fence and hitting "New Plug-in Style from Unstyled Plug-In.." in Objects Properties. However, when I apply this New Fence Style to any new objects, the display in Top/Plan view is wrong. It looks like the plan view configuration of the original fence that I created the fence style from is being applied to the new object, like it created a symbol. The fence displays fine in 3D view, but I cannot find where to fix at all. I do have the Draw 2D and Draw 3D set to "Full Detail" under Fence Settings. Any direction for a newbie would help. rDesign
Welcome to the Forum! It's hard to tell what is going on from your description and the screenshot. Even though I follow your steps, I am not able to reproduce your results. If I select a Fence (drawn on a Design Layer), and select Replace... on the Fence OIP, it correctly replaces the existing Fence with the new Fence Style -- both 2d and 3d views are correct. Maybe you have objects very far from the internal origin of your file, that that can cause strange things to happen. Create a new blank file, copy and paste your Fence Styles into the new file, and start drawing near the file insertion point. Repeat your steps to see if you get a different result. Also, it might be easer to create a new Fence Style by starting with an existing one in the Vw Libraries folder and modifying it to your liking. If none of that helps, you may need to post a sample file to see what is going on. 1 Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee Tamsin Slatter Posted September 13 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted September 13 Could it be that you have left a particular parameter to be “By Instance” instead of By Style? 1 Quote Link to comment

Thanks for the heads up. I did try this with successful results but I think I was able to identify the problem. If I right click on the Fence Style in the Resource Manager, there is an option for Delete User-Provided 2D component. It looks like some 2D component was saved for Top view. How I did this in the first place, I do not know, but if I delete this, then the fence style appears normally. 2 Quote Link to comment

Curtis M
I feel like this is still in the same vein as the topic, but I have created a fence style that utilizes a symbol for the post. The posts weren't displaying in top/plan view, but I've realized its because they utilize the 2D components of the symbol. The post is pretty simple, but I edited the 2D component and traced the model below to get it to display. Is there a proper or faster way to get the 3D top plan view to show for fence posts? Is there an easier way to find how to edit these settings? Quote Link to comment

This is good because it means you can control exactly how it displays. The best way to generate a 2D component for a symbol is to use the right-click 'Generate 2D from 3D Component' command within the component edit mode. Quote Link to comment

I'd imagine if the posts were super complex, that would a lot of sense. I'll keep the generate button in mind next time. Quote Link to comment
