Yearly versions need to go

digitalcarbon

Question

I'm ok upgrading every year as I use VW heavily.

BUT I work with other architects/companies that also have VW.

These people are not so eager to stay current and they are a hard sell.

We also have massive projects in VW2024 and the headache of converting the entire file structure, including libraries etc to the next version is crippling.

I have been free of this headache with the mechanical side of my business which has been using Onshape since 2017.

No version updates, no converting my massive library, and as a side point I have experienced no crashes since I started using it in 2017.

You need to find the person/s in your VW office who suggested the VW thru the browser idea back in 2010? and send them my deepest apologies as I was one of the ones who laugh the idea off the stage.

I am paying dearly for my lack of vision.

also these architects/companies that have VW want to jump in at times to do some design work.  so that means setting up the whole sharing thing (which I have forgotten how to use) which is complicated with setting up permissions, check in and out etc.   so now I have a architect who did some design work but had to do it on an older file and he cannot remember where he placed it.

After using VW for more than ten years now,

I even get afraid of no more being able to open old Projects VW files because

the current version will only up to 5 year previous versions and I may no more

have any Mac Hardware/OS to install an older version that can still access

these files.

And it would require another VW license activation that is no more availble

(after the Corona extra activation ended since there is no more Corona (?)

 and home office and such)

I think VW should finally stop that Autodesk'esk VW File Version incompatibility.

(Where for ACAD and many others it is even only upwards compatibility)

So all your files right now that you have are more secure than something on the cloud?  I'm using dropbox.  Also what about VW Nomad? is that not a cloud something?

I’ve worked on projects where the team had to work on secured workstations that were not connected to a LAN or WAN, fully air gapped from the outside world.  The technicians worked in rooms that were monitored by camera even. Spooky stuff.

also, the VW presentation showing cloud VW back in 2010? what where they thinking if is a no-go?

I would like to find that person and talk to them.  Have them call me.

Don’t be flippant, nobody said the cloud was a bad idea for commoners, it just can’t be forced upon your clients for reasons mentioned earlier.  There are certain projects that simply can not be done on browser and cloud based systems.  Well, I guess it’s a moot point since this software isn’t on the approved list anyhow… sail away into the clouds if you want 😉

Browser based design is a no-go for a tremendous amount of private sector and government work due to security concerns.

Perhaps it's fine if you aren't bound by scary legal contracts and NDAs where if you get hacked you might get sued out of existence 🙂

The percentage who produce documentation in a secure environment, with no connection to the internet, must be infinitesimal. Especially compared to the potential market for a browser-based VW. But perhaps a way around this would be for VW to provide a self-hosted version that offices can run on computer or local server.

I imagine the % of users is small, but the market value of such design/build work would blow your mind.

I don't think VWX is going to be among the choices of software you are authorized to use anytime soon, too much work for too little reward for them I imagine.
