Corner Windows

Sun ShineSet

Question

Can anyone explain why a corner window won't display as open in the plan view in Vectorworks 2023? I'm also experiencing an issue where the fixed part of the window shows as open, while the casement part appears closed. It seems so random, and I can't figure out how to control it.

I kept my file in Vectorworks 2023 to avoid the sill issue, but now I'm encountering other problems.

I keep editing my message because I’ve realized that all the windows are randomly showing as open or not in the plan view. It’s so inconsistent, and I can’t seem to figure out why.

Thank you.

As @E|FA linked to, there is a known issue with sills in corner windows.  However, your description sounds like the sashes are incorrectly showing open or closed.  Can you attach a screenshot or simple Vectorworks file showing the issue?

Hi @Sun ShineSet,

Thank you for the file.

This is definitely a side effect of the Door and Window Handing parameters that were introduced in Vectorworks 2024.  I Vectorworks 2023 and earlier, Door and Windows in walls only draw themselves in one way with regards to handing (what left/right and in/out) and relied on Vectorworks flipping the object in the wall (using the "Flip" button in the Object Info palette) to get the other three.  In Vectorworks 2024, it's no longer possible to actually flip a Door and Window in a wall.  Instead, the Door and Window gained new three basic handing parameters for this:

  1. "Interior Side of Wall": This allows the door or window to decide which side of the wall is the interior side.  While it makes sense to always assume the interior side of a wall to be the right side for an exterior wall (drawn in the Vectorworks clockwise convention), it's ambiguous for interior walls where you may want a door from an office to consider the office side to be interior.
  2. Left/Right Setting:  For a swing door, this would be the "Hinge Side" parameter but other configurations may have a similar parameter with a more appropriate name.
  3. In/Out Setting:  For a swing door, this would be the "Swing Direction" parameter but other configurations may have a similar parameter with a more appropriate name.

Note:  The behavior of the "Flip" button in the Object Info palette in Vectorworks 2024 now changes appropriate parameter values to effectively flip the look of the object.  In cases where a handing parameter is By Style, the parameter will not be changed and the object will not appear to flip.

Due to these new behaviors, the "Custom" sash configuration in the Window cannot be reliably translated forward to Vectorworks 2015.  In your case, the reason is because the Custom configuration is now defined as you see the window from the exterior side (with regards to left and right) and the In/Out parameter is always based on the Interior Side setting.  While Vectorworks 2024 does convert other Door and Window configurations from earlier versions well, there were complications that make converting a custom sash window correctly not always possible.  If you open the Custom Configuration Options dialog from that window in Vectorworks 2023, you will see the preview looks how the same window looks in Vectorworks 2024 when viewed from its exterior side.  Unfortunately, this means the affected windows will need to have their custom sash settings manually changed to get what you need.

Hi Matt,

Let's set aside the corner window issue for now. Please review the other windows in the attached file (screenshot included). No matter how I flip them, they incorrectly display as awning windows on the bottom small portion, even though they should be casement windows according to the settings. Additionally, the plan view doesn't show the direction of the opening.

I’ve tried unlocking each sash configuration, but I still can’t get it to work. Do you have any other solutions? I have 118 units to manage, so I’m looking for an efficient fix.

Thank you,

@Sun ShineSet,

I opened your file in VW 2024 Update 7 and do not see the issue with the fixed glass unit changing to an awning.  Are you using an older 2024 version?

OK.  I do see something odd happening in Update 7.  I'll take a closer look...

@Sun ShineSet, The problem looks like a bug in Vectorworks 2023 that was fixed in 2024.  It looks like the by style custom sash settings were not getting propagated to the styled instances after editing the style in 2023.  While this appears to be fixed in 2024 (I'm testing in 2024 Update 7), the style must be edited in order for those settings to propagate to the instances.  I'm not sure if I. can come up with a more effecient fix but, so far, this is what I have:  Edit the style of any instance showing the issue and, when the Edit Style dialog appears, click OK and all instances should correctly update to the by style settings.

If I switch to VW2024 and turn off the corner window sill, will that help resolve the window operation display issues?

The sill issue is not related to the other settings. If you bring the file to 2024 and edit the style as needed, the problem should not happen again.

If moving to 2024, this is what I would recommend:  Edit each Window Style in the Resource Manage that uses a "Custom" sash and click "OK" without making any changes.  This will force all the "by style" parameter values from the style to the instances so you can see where things are in the model before making additional changes to the styles.  After that, change the settings in the Window styles as needed.  Keep in mind that a window can no longer be flipped in a wall so if you have a style that has flipped and unflipped instances in 2023, it's no longer possible to do that in 2024 with one window style and you'll likely need to create an additional style for the "flipped" version.  IOW:  If you have a Custom sash window with one large sash on the left and two smaller sashes on the right and want a flipped version of it, you'll need to create another window style with one large sash on the right and two smaller sashes on the left.
