International Collaborations and distributor’s objects > how do we do ?

GatRed

Question

Hi to the Vectorworks team.

We are french and for some projects we collaborate with architects from other countries (Australia, Germany…).

We found out that there are many objects that are made by local distributors like Windows (CW and DE), Doors (CW and DE), opening in wall (CW), etc…

It is not obvious from a user point of view, which object is made by whom (Vectorworks, CW or DE), and which one is in which version because there are exceptions like the stair which is made by CW but present in the US version.

From the user point of view, it is a mess and really difficult to understand.

So, how can we interact on specific distributor tools on international projects ?

Is there a list of tools present in all versions ?

Finally, couldn’t be there a kind of agreement that all tools would be in all versions ? (even if they have to be installed separately via install partner tools)

Yes, localized versions usually have a lot of additional or replacements of Tools.

With the US version you can open the files and see the geometry but you can't

edit e.g. the german Windows.

So if you can organize collaboration so that each contributor cares about his

localized tools geometry itself, that should work.

(Not sure if a VW US person can do spreadsheets and calculations if he knows

the localized variable's names ?)

Or in the worst case, all are forced to work with basic US tools only.

E.g. the german VW users can grab the US Windows out of their Workspace editor.

How can we know who did each tool, before figuring out by opening the file from a foreign colleague  ? > that’s why I asked for lists of tools present in each version

No, the formulas are linked with the tool. Only basic functions works. That is a big limitation.

That seems to be the better solution, you still need to know the tools common to all versions.

And so local tools have less interest.

More, if you get an already designed drawing from a foreign country, the joy of finding a native Vectorworks file gives way to the frustration of having to redraw all the distributor’s objects.

BTW,

CW is Computerworks, the company that das the localization for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

(Could be that the french part of Switzerland prefers the french version ?)

AFAIK VW Benelux has also a lots of custom Tools.

I always wondered why they don't just work together and e.g. create a universal Window PIO.

Would be cool if we could just switch language settings for tools, standards and libraries.

Yes, DE is for Design Express which is the distributor of Vectorworks in Benelux, France and Poland.
