hidden line view

limbrost

Question

Would love to see

1/ a hidden line view that didn't polygonise all the surfaces. Manually removing non-edge lines is really slow.

I understand that you can convert to lines either wireframe, hidden etc. but you still get non-edge lines that take a long time to erase.

2/ Sweep along 2 rails (often extrusion along a path can twist the objects or you have no control over twisting)

3/selecting with a marquee - running LEFT to RIGHT only selects that which is fully within marquee. Marquee created RIGHT to LEFT selects anything that touches the marquee line. Autocad and Rhino do this and it is a fantastic feature- saves heaps of time.

Keep up the good work Vectorworks!

Have you seen the smoothing angle settings at the document preferences?

Could you elaborate on this one? Have you explored the model>sweep? You can use a 2D locus to indicate the vertical rotation axis.

Extrusion along two rails, or some equivalent, is really important. Here's an example: try to create a curving stairs rail that comes down a stairs, levels out, and ends in a volute. You would want the base of this rail to always be level in cross section. If you attempt to extrude the shape along a nurbs curve, the shape and hence the base twists unpredictably. If you could set two rails that will define the lower corners of this cross section, the desired effect could be achieved. Alternatively, the extrude along path tool could be provided with some other user control over twist.

limbrost: setting the smoothing angle in the preferences dialog box, as Alexandre suggests, really helps with the extraneous line clean up. There are occasional glitches, but usually it works.

I personally prefer the way VW marquee selection works, and as iboymatt points out, you can have the ACAD method with very little extra trouble.
