VW2024 terrible lag on second monitor

Greg Mitchell

Question

Just upgraded to 2024.  Everything I do, i.e. zooming in and out with the scroll wheel has a 1-2 second delay.  I didn't have this problem on 2023.  It doesn't happen on my laptop screen.

I'm on a Macbook Pro M2 Max running Sonoma 14.1.2

I have tried connecting through my USB doc and directly to HDMI.

Any ideas?

Where are we at with a fix for this team? Seems like it's been a problem for folks as far back as January. VW2024 has become a very expensive and very useless bit of software until this is fixed.

In my office with more than 20 licences, a software change is under consideration. Most of us have the second monitor turned off, which makes the workflow slower and more uncomfortable. Unbelievable that the problem has not been solved after 6 months...

MacOS 13.5.2

MBP M2 Max

1-2 eternal monitors, no minor changes when differently connected

vwx 2024 SP5

I have the same Issue here - lagging while zooming and dragging around. until now i found no solution for me working. PUSH

FYI if your are a Cinema4D user: I had a similar experience with Cinema4D. You can believe it or not, when working on a second screen i have to open an empty palette and have to align it to the top of the second monitor and miraculously the lag disappears completly- (does not work for vwx ;-))

I have a USB-C monitor and it is happening most of the time, but not always, almost as if there is a particular command or signal that triggers a crushing lag. (and I don't know what this is).
Shifting the VW window back to the MacBook will resolve it, as will closing the MacBook and using the monitor only.

I just started having this issue again yesterday. It went away for about a month and randomly started again.

I have two external monitors running from USB-C on my MacBook Pro. Im opening th lid, and the mouse moves, then it freezes, close the lid, and it moves again. But only on VW/ All other software runs fine

New income source.  Sell ads on a Twitch live steam of your drafting!!  😂

Sorry, no real ideas. But maybe that information from you will help identify the problem. It does make it seem like an OS problem though since programs should not be interacting on MacOS.

Does is slow again when you quit the screencast?

😄 did not think about that - nice idea

yes, it gets worse instantly after i quit the cast/session.

maybe when a cast starts the system uses other power source or a "high performance mode"?

here is a Video of it. Since i could not screencast it 😄

this issue is such a drag. seems good on the primary monitor and just started to lag on my second monitor.  I moved the app from second to first and back again and it seems to work fine again. super WEIRD. I am converting from REVIT because I have developed a temporary allergy to PC's but this could send me back if I can't sort it. hope some super-smart humans are noodling on this one. until then deep breaths are the only medicine for now I guess.

Just found this thread when searching for why WindowServer seems to suddenly use 95% of my CPU when Vectorworks is onscreen.

I don't believe I experienced this issue before I upgraded to Service Pack 5 (2024). It also isn't happening all the time, but I've yet to isolate any variables as to when it happens vs. when it doesn't. When it does happen, Vectorworks becomes completely unusable. We're not talking about a lag of 1 or 2 seconds. We're talking about a lag of 10-15 seconds. My machine is essentially paralyzed... until I switch away from VWX. Then WindowServer goes back down to around 30%, and everything's fine.

I just upgraded to Update 6 and this issue is still persisting for me.  The issue only occurs when I move the Windows>Palettes>Navigation Palette to a second monitor.  All other palettes appear to behave normally when located on the second monitor.   I was very much hoping this would be resolved in Update 6.   For now I just make sure the Navigation window is on the main screen separate from the other palettes.

Adding a "me too"!

This started happening to me this week upon return from vacation. No idea why as I hadn't done any system or VW updates recently and I've never had the problem before. The only change in my workflow was that, while away I had to do a couple Zooms where I was presenting from within VW. I used my iPad Pro as a 2nd display rather than the Dell 32" I have in the office.

Upon return to the office, lag was so bad I tried all the normal troubleshooting things I could think of. I then updated VW to SP 6 and my system to Mac OS 14.6 (I'd hung on to Mac OS 13 to be able to run some other software).

Disabling "Displays have separate spaces" seemed to help yesterday but things were laggy again this morning. I'm currently working with all windows and palletes on 1 display in order to be able to get some work done. But this is less than ideal and I hope there's a fix.

Getting the same issue here. Been working from home the last little while, and got back to my office and couldn't figure out why the lag was so bad. But it's fine when I work on my primary screen. Very frustrating. I tried using a floating view pane as mentioned above but it's still very laggy.

This problem reappeared out of nowhere, with no changes to the machine or hardware. The small fix no longer works.

Same behavior when making a Quicktime screencast: no lags. When turning it off, the viewport starts lagging.

@JuanP can you give us some update about this (vwx) topic?
