Dimensions cannot be modified

Once the handles of a dimension are off they cannot be turned on again. Which means that dimensions cannot be adjusted or eliminated. What command did I accidently switch on that inserted this gremlin into my files?

sounds like a class or layer visability problem. Check the class and layer options for show/snap/modify others.

Generally, dimensions are objects that are placed in the already created class called Dimensions. As Andy said, if you have your class options set to Active only, or show others or something like that, you will not be able to select the dimensions unless you moved the dimensions to the current active class (which I wouldn't suggest) or set the Class Options in the Organize menu to Show Snap Modify Others. You can then go into the classes dialog box and turn off or grey other classes that you do not want to see or you would rather see them greyed out.
