Moving Instrument Labels

I'm having trouble adjusting the position of individual labels where they conflict with those on other nearby instruments. I'm following the instructions from the Spotlight manual. Thus I'm selecting the instrument and can see the handles on each of the separate labels shown. I point to the handle and the cursor changes to the diagonal arrows. I pick up the object and a crosshair appears, which I can move around. When I place it, nothing happens however. The label stays where it is.

I've tried changing my active class to that of the label I'm trying to move, but that doesn't help. I'm using Spotlight 9.0.1 on a Powermac G4 with OS 9.0.4.

Any ideas?

How many labels are you using?

Is the label you're trying to move dead center by any chance?

If it's dead center and you are not using 6 labels, occassionally the control points get stacked on top of one another. In the label legend manager, move the label that is center a little bit up or down. That should help.

I'm using 4 labels currently (Unit Number, Channel, Dimmer, Color) oriented in the standard places on the Label Legend. I try to move the color label, which is near nothing else, without success. The same goes for all other labels, regardless of their position.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I'm not sure if this will fix your problem but I think it will. Select your lighting instrument and scroll the object info palette all the way down until you can see the field called "Do Not Edit" Clear this field completely out so that it is empty and hit return. The instrument will re-generate and you will loose any of your custom label locations, but this should let you move the labels. You can select multiple instruments and clear this field out simultaneously on a bunch of them.

Let me know if this works for you.

Sorry Kevin,

I just tried it. I can delete all of the info from the "Do Not Edit" window, but when I press Enter or Return it replaces itself. I'm still apparently frozen. I also just tried turning off all of my constraints to see if it was some sort of snap issue. No luck. I'll try it on one of the Mac G3's here at work to see if its a processor specific problem.

This is correct. If the field is blank it re-fills it out, but it should do so with default information. I had hoped that this would unfreeze your labels for you.

Can you please e-mail me your file so that I can check this out for you?
