Kraftworks
I know how to convert multiple objects FROM symbols TO lighting devices, but is there a way to do this in reverse? I'm trying to simplify a document that will need 20k+ lighting devices. 1 Quote Link to comment
Kraftworks
I've tried this before. It doesn't actually reduce the amount of data VW sifts through. I'm talking about stripping objects of their "lighting device" status entirely. Quote Link to comment
JBenghiat
@Kraftworks I just tested this, and Modify>Convert>Convert to Group works exactly as you described -- all selected Lighting Devices become symbols. Ungroup will also work in this case. Perhaps you were thinking of Modify>Convert>Replace with symbol. Quote Link to comment
EAlexander
Command + K will take them back to symbols, but if they were focused as lighting instruments, they will lose that data and go back to how the symbol sits in x, y, z. 2 Quote Link to comment

Not really helpful behaviour, is it..... Kevin 1 Quote Link to comment
EAlexander
@Kevin McAllisterUgh. Every time I bring a lighting rig into Cinema4d I have to either refocus and reposition (hanging angle) every unit, or have them oriented correctly and have each individual light be a unique piece of geometry x 600. It makes me weep. Sorry to hijack the thread. Edited April 7 by EAlexander 4 Quote Link to comment

EAlexander
Yes, Cinema4D calls this "Current state to Object" and it's brilliant. 1 Quote Link to comment
VIRTUALENVIRONS
Is that not the same as "convert to group" in Vectorworks. Quote Link to comment

VIRTUALENVIRONS
Sorry, I was just commenting on the C4D, current state to object. They have a similar function, except the C4D uses it to flatten Sweeps, extrudes, etc. besides "instances". 1 Quote Link to comment
VIRTUALENVIRONS
There seems to be two threads going here. This is the one that involves positioning lights in C4D. In Vectorworks - light and holder - create a "target" object where you want the light to point to. In C4D -make the holder a child of the light - add a target tag to the light or lights. You can add a tag to 600 lights at once. - With the tags selected, set your target object in the dialogue box. - 600 lights will point there immediately.
