Object filters that would allow the user to turn on or off objects instead of having to setup layers for everything. Othe CAD programs have this feature and it is very convenient. symbols, lines, circles, text etc. could then be diplayed as you wish

Have you not found classes useful in this capacity? You can put objects in different classes (which reach across layers) and control their visibility and attributes.

I think the Custom visibility command

from the organize menu does what you want.
