Help removing circular shapes from extrusions

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am attempting to remove a circular shape from an extruded square. The issue I am running into is the the area I remove is being displayed as a polygon of sorts rather than an actual circle. An octagon, hexagon, etc. The larger the circular the fewer the sides the polygon has.  I have tried three different methods. First creating both the square and circle extrusions separately, overlaying the two and using the subtract solids option in the modify menu. The second method was creating a 2D square, using the clip tool to remove the desired circle and then creating an extrusion. The final method was to create the square extrusion, double click to enter the extrusion "window", drew a circle, and then used the clip surface option from the modify menu. All three options left me with a polygon shaped opening rather than an actual circle. When I click on the extrusion I have created the "orange" outline depicts a true circle but the filled "white" space depicts a polygon. Any idea why this might be?

Edit: I should note that when I create extrusions from a circle, I have no issues. The extruded circle maintains its circular shape rather than looking like a polygon.

Hans,

Still no luck unfortunately. After some more google research I found a few other people having a similar issue. Some with no solution, others with a variety of different and sometimes odd solutions. Still not seeing anything that is resolving my issue. Short of perhaps rebooting the computer or upgrading the 2021 version of vectorworks I am using. I'll try restarting the computer at the end of the day as that's super easy.

It's definitely odd to look at in a design layer but not the end of the world. I just realized that when I put the extrusions on a sheet layer, everything looks just fine. As long as I can print outs and pdf's that look fine it's not the end of the world.

Thanks for your help!

Are your design layers at 1:1?

Tested this in VW 2020 / MacBook Pro - no issue - As Pat suggests - have both the 2D & 3D set to high (Render settings my also change what you see on the screen)

FYI - I find that where the extrude is in space or the scale that the design layer is set has no bering on what the geometry looks like.

See attached - Drawn at Scale =  1:10,000 / Location = 200,000+ meters from Zero/Zero  /  Zoom = 200,000+ percent out - nice smooth circle

Drawn at Scale =  1:1 / Location = Zero/Zero  /  Zoom = 4,000,000+ percent in - nice smooth circle

Curious, Is the fallacy of drawing @ 1:1 a throw back proliferated by those who ascribe to legacy CAD applications other than VW/RW ?

(Please correct me if I am errant on this belief)

I managed to figure it out. To recap, initially, the 2D and 3D conversion rates were set at medium. Bumping them up to high or very high did not resolve the issue. While the problem persisted, the correct geometry did translate to sheet layers and saved pdfs/printouts. It was only the way it displayed on design layers as 3D objects.

EAlexander pointed me in the right direction. Under the View tab I checked the render settings. I was in OpenGL, not the Shaded view. There is an option for OpenGL options here however. This was the culprit. The detail setting under the OpenGL Options was set to low. I switched it to high and my 3D clipped and extruded circles now look like circles!

Thanks to all for your assistance!
