You can create a helix by sweeping an object and setting the pitch to something other than 0.

For example:

1. Draw an object that represents the cross-section of part of the helix. A small circle will work well for this example.

2. Place a locus to the left of the object. The distance between the object and the locus will be the radius of the sweep.

3. Select both the object and the locus and choose the Sweep command from the Model menu.

4. Set the pitch to something other than zero. If you set it to 2", the helix will rise 2" with every revolution.

5. Set the arc angle to whatever you want; 720? will give you two complete revolutions.

6. Click the OK button.

You can edit the sweep and play with different values for pitch, arc angle, etc. by selecting the sweep and using the Object Info palette.
