Automatic plane mode not availble

Hi I am very new to vector works and when trying to set the layer plane to automatic it's displaying this message 'automatic mode is not available in this current context'.

 

While working through some seminar examples I had the automatic plane showing and then at some point it just started displaying the above and I can't find any way of resetting. Any help much appreciated

It would be good to know what context you are trying to use it in. Some screen shots would help. 

 

You can only use the automatic working planes in a design layer and when you have a creation tool ( a tool that creates objects such as rectangle, line, etc) selected.

The Automatic Working Plane will only activate when you have an appropriate drawing tool selected - Line, Circle, Rectangle, etc. You are getting that message because you don't have an appropriate tool active.

I realised after posting that @Jonathan Pickup  essentially said the same thing first - sorry!
