Vectorworks University Certifications

Recommended Posts

I have been drawing in Vectorworks for well over a decade now, but my learning has mostly been self-guided and my foundation definitely has some gaps. I decided I should work my way through the Associate Certification on Vectorworks University to fill these gaps while I am between projects.

However, the Associate Certification courses are all based in VW2021 it appears.  Some of the topics revolve around information that is totally out-of-date.  For example, there is a whole section on the snapping preferences that still refers to the floating snapping palette which has now moved to a permanent position in the lower right corner of the screen.  Access to all the settings for this palette are not available via the path the videos refer to.  This is the example that stands out mot in my mind, but I have noticed a couple of other instances where a menu or process in my software has not been the same in the example in the course video.

I have a couple questions:

  1. Do the more advanced certifications also use the old software? I can work my way around any problems while watching some free videos on demand, but I have a hard time justifying spending money to attend a scheduled seminar and take a test if the information is not current.
  2. Is there a new version of the certification in the works?

With all that said, I have always liked Vectorworks University.  It has pulled me out of a lot of jams over the years.  I have really enjoyed discovering all the elementary things that I never knew I could do and finding workflows that shave steps off of processes while working my way through the certification materials.  I look forward to continuing to learn from it.

It will be a shame if they charge for their certification program and VWX Uni training, even if they update the training annually.

It is the only thing remaining that convinced me to invest my time in the software and my money on a license.

With the perpetual license option eliminated soon AND significant price increases COUPLED with the lack of Vectorworks trained professionals in my industry...

Anything that presents a barrier to training, such as cost or outdated materials, will be another significant nail in the coffin for Vectorworks, IMHO of course.

It will be back to LandFX or Revit for businesses with an immediate need of hiring talent that can hit the ground running.

With Vectorworks University, I can at least hire someone and have them follow my recommended learning path...

both in the office and at home without cost or complicated log in procedures.
