Data Tag Box Auto Width?

I have a data tag with variable width. 

I want a box around that text that automatically resizes width based on the text box. 

I remember setting something like this up before. 

Can you remind me how it is done?

In the Tag Layout Edit mode you need to use the Layout Constraint settings on the text object:

i don't think that works for a box around the text field

 

been messing around with a data tag i have open in this file i'm working on:

btw for context, the only way i know how to put a bounding box around text is to use the callout tool (and then minimize the leader)

 

hence drawing a box (or other poly) around the text field

it's one poly for the entire data tag (almost like a crop object for a viewport)

Well you can have multiple polys but the constraints are to a boundary that VW places around all of the geometry so you can't constrain individual text objects to individual polygons.

 

So you can do this:

 

 

But can't as far as I know have the rectangles varying widths depending on the amount of text in each field.

 

BTW did you know about the Tools > Create Data Tag Style... command? I didn't until a couple of weeks ago. This allows you to create a tag directly from an object so might be useful in your case where you want to list lots of parameters + put boxes around the text. You can then tweak the constraints to get the same thing as in the above screenshot:

 

 

 

Very quick + easy way to generate a certain type of data tag + new with VW2022.

One of the best-kept secrets by the VW marketing dept. Think it’s actually been around since 2021 but the command had to be manually added to your workspace.

 

I use it for all the data tags that I’ve been gradually adding to my user library. I always check both columns to create labels. Continuing to build… continuity… across all data tag styles.
