Global design and BIM software provider Vectorworks, Inc. announces the 2020 release of Vectorworks Architect, Landmark, Spotlight, Designer and Fundamentals, as well as 2020 versions of Vision and Braceworks. This newest release brings improved software performance, quality enhancements and new data-driven workflows. “Data and usability are the cornerstones of this year’s product line enhancements,” said Vectorworks CEO Dr. Biplab Sarkar. “When we looked at the future of the industry and what our customers’ needs were, we kept coming back to data, particularly data-driven insights. Vectorworks 2020 is centered around providing our customers with intuitive ways to use the powerful tools of our products, while also offering more practical ways to incorporate the use of data for an improved and insightful design workflow.” With this focus on insightful design, Vectorworks 2020 extends the existing Data Visualization feature to the design layer environment. This lets customers change objects’ attributes using data parameters to visualize data for error checking, work validation and quality control. “With Data Visualization now available on design layers, we’re able to keep our attribute assignments consistent between projects, allowing us to quickly and consistently draw attention to relevant design elements,” said Brendan Gray, principal designer and president of Gray Matter Visual, Inc. Additionally, customers will experience optimized Open BIM capabilities, improved file performance and other updates that include: · Increased workflow efficiency with the ability to directly edit fields in a list browser, such as in the Navigation palette or the Organization dialog. · Improved file performance and responsiveness of large and complex models with the updated Vectorworks Graphics Module. · A new Schematic View workflow to handle the complexity of modeling and documenting rigging workflows in Vectorworks Spotlight. · Accurate geolocation of a project with the new Geographic Information System (GIS) toolset and an integration with Esri’s ArcGIS online services. Global design and BIM software developer Vectorworks, Inc. sponsored the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) for the second year and congratulates the winners of each region for their recognition as emerging entertainment design professionals. Eight regional festivals took place from January 9 to March 3, 2018 and included workshops, discussions, regional-level scholarships and award programs, which allowed students the chance to present their best productions and receive feedback from professionals. For each of the regional festivals, a winner in the Design, Technology and Management category received a professional license of Vectorworks Spotlight 2018 software.   3. Global design and BIM software developer Vectorworks, Inc. announces the English-version release of its 2018 Vectorworks software. The release includes Vectorworks® Architect, Landmark, Spotlight, Designer and Fundamentals, as well as Vision. New this year is Braceworks™, a structural load analysis add-on module targeted to designers and riggers working on temporary entertainment structures. “With Vectorworks 2018, we focused on user workflows, making them more robust and efficient,” said Vectorworks CEO Dr. Biplab Sarkar. “In BIM, you can best see this in our direct section and elevation editing and multiview capabilities, and more subtly in all the Wall tool enhancements that allow designers to correctly model wall constructions so walls appear accurately in plan, section and elevation drawings. The direct site model contour editing and enhanced seating sections are other good examples of our usability improvements.” Another theme for this launch was the integration of analysis and design. With the addition of Braceworks to the entertainment portfolio that already includes the industry-leading Spotlight and Vision software, entertainment professionals can complete their entire workflow, from design to documentation to production, in one interface. Also, customers will notice the simplification of Vectorworks worksheet capabilities, which makes it easier for them to create custom reports from model or drawing data. This release is the first in the 2018 worldwide rollout, which will include the release of ten additional localized-language versions. Some of the highly anticipated additions for Vectorworks 2018 include: · Multiple drawing views: Use multiple views of a project simultaneously, and begin work in one view pane and finish it in another. Switch effortlessly between viewports, views and visibility settings — simply set up panes and view them all at once. Instantly gauge the impact of a design change across 3D, plan, section and elevation views, and even start a rendering in one view while working in another. · Direct section and elevation editing: Edit models directly from viewports: add openings, align and distribute windows, reposition doors across multiple layers, reshape walls — it’s all possible. Change the 3D views while in the section to see how edits simultaneously affect plans and model views. And, create better-looking, more-accurate drawings in a fraction of the time. For architecture, notable improvements include: · Improved graphic output for architectural documents: Generate documentation from a BIM file much more efficiently. Improved graphic controls within section views of wall joins and wall, or slab and roof components provides the flexibility to quickly achieve high-quality documentation from a 3D model. · Robust wall modeling options: Control individual component heights by instance, attach information to them, insert component caps and simultaneously edit multiple selected components from an easy-to-use dialog box. Plus, swiftly make wall graphic display changes with the new ability to switch all attributes by class. · Easier title block customization: Customize items such as variables and orientation, choose from an unlimited set of information to include in a title block, and use styles to more simply manage many title blocks across one or multiple projects. · Streamlined drawing distribution: Publish drawings based on issue date and a tightly integrated new title block object; generate and distribute drawing sets, issue information and reports throughout the duration of a project; and automate the typically laborious process of creating a BIM project or lighting a stage. Enhancements for entertainment design include: · New zoom option for video and blended screens: It's now easier than ever to manage the planning and visualization of video screens in designs. With new graphic output capabilities, more accurately understand, estimate and adjust available throw and zoom, to enable final equipment choices earlier in the design process. · Enhanced seating section: Choose from additional layout methods, multiple seat numbering options and graphic controls to easily set and modify seating sections from the Object Info palette. Generate more precise seating layout visualizations for an event and automate seating schedules for inventory and ordering. For landscape design, important updates include: · Direct site model contour editing: Edit a site model easier than ever with improved site model settings and direct 2D contour editing. Modify each contour line as easily as editing a polyline. · New import/export tree survey options: Generate existing site conditions from GIS and tree survey data without the need for external tools. Just use geolocated tree species data to create existing tree objects and export back to clients via Shapefile (SHP), TXT and DXF formats. As in past years, many updates to the software directly correlated with customer feedback. Global design software developer Vectorworks, Inc. is announcing Braceworks, a new 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) add-on for Vectorworks Spotlight, at the Prolight + Sound 2017 conference from April 4 to April 7 at Vectorworks’ German distributor ComputerWorks GmBH’s booth E60, Hall 3.0. Braceworks provides design, production and rigging professionals with an easy way to gauge the performance of temporary structures under load to ensure safety and compliance with engineering codes and standards. By adding Braceworks into Spotlight, designers for the first time have a completely integrated entertainment modeling, analysis and documentation process. Braceworks will be available as an add-on to Spotlight with the Vectorworks 2018 release this fall, at which time pricing will be made available. “With today’s workflows, it’s difficult for entertainment professionals to quickly and accurately assess the safety of their designs,” said Vectorworks CEO Dr. Biplab Sarkar. "Giving them access to structural analysis within their 3D design environment is a massive improvement for their workflows. It not only will save them time and effort, but make it much easier to quickly evaluate how design changes will impact a structure’s performance.” Developed in collaboration with DeerSoft GmbH, Braceworks analyzes complete 3D structural systems modeled in Spotlight. Braceworks also includes support for Eurocodes and upcoming ESTA standards, such as the E1.6. The crux of global design and BIM software developer Vectorworks, Inc.’s philosophy has always involved leveraging input and implementing product feedback from practicing architects, landscape designers, landscape architects and lighting designers, among other design professionals. To further this commitment, three new industry experts will be joining Vectorworks’ ever-growing product marketing team: Luc Lefebvre, senior architect product specialist, Jim Woodward, senior entertainment product specialist and Brian Nicholson, senior landscape product specialist. Led by Jeremy Powell, senior marketing director at Vectorworks, the broad team of industry experts acts as advocates for customers and the industry relating to the marketing and development of products. They provide one-on-one demonstrations of product capabilities, participate in professional association committees and visit firms in the field as a means to generate current insights for industry-specific tool development, as well as act as fountains of industry knowledge for other internal teams. Regarding the new additions, Powell said, “We are elated to welcome Luc, Jim and Brian to the Vectorworks family. Luc Lefebvre, OAQ, LEED AP BD+C, Senior Architect Product Specialist at Vectorworks Coming from a family of builders, Lefebvre knew he wanted to study architecture from adolescence. He kick-started his journey at Montreal University, where he received his undergraduate degree in architecture. Since then, he’s enjoyed more than 20 successful years in the business. Most recently, he served as project manager and BIM manager at King + King Architects in Syracuse, NY, where he focused on designing educational facilities and acted as a BIM consultant for both internal employees and other firms. Some of his past projects include Le Moyne College Master Plan and Madden School of Business, SUNY Cortland DeGroat Hall and SUNY Morrisville Mohawk Hall. In his office, Lefebrve was responsible for streamlining building information modeling processes and played an integral part in King + King Architects’ company-wide transition to BIM using Vectorworks Architect. This, in part, was his motivation to work for Vectorworks, as he enjoyed moving his firm from 2D to a 3D BIM workflow. Regarding his shift in careers, Lefebrve said, “I felt like I had just scratched the surface of Vectorworks’ capabilities, and I needed to know more about the software. I wanted to help other people experience that same excitement from learning how to do BIM projects with Vectorworks.” In his new position, he plans to narrow in on the BIM process, as he’s an ardent believer in Vectorworks software as the all-in-one design tool because it eliminates the need for further applications in the total design of a project. Jim Woodward, Senior Entertainment Specialist at Vectorworks Woodward is another long-time Vectorworks supporter. With more than 35 years of experience in the entertainment design industry, Woodward began touring cross country as a lighting technician as a teenager and never looked back. He later opened his own design company in Boston, ExhibitLogic, with his wife, Shirley Woodward, where they tackled 3D visualization, rendering and modeling for a wide variety of industries, such as concerts, theatrical events, film, television, corporate events, trade shows, museums, architectural firms and retail stores. From spearheading concert-like booth and exhibit designs for the NAB Show, the Comdex convention and the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) to touring with artists like Aerosmith, Neil Diamond and Yes, he’s had an illustrious career that has taken him around the world. Furthermore, he has guest lectured at places such as Boston University and Symphony Hall in Boston, as well as worked on productions such as “The Proposal” and “Ted 2.” While Woodward’s day-to-day was never the same in his career, there was one common thread: a passion for technology. He started out using Vectorworks Spotlight early on in its existence and immediately came to realize it as the go-to design software for entertainment design. As he dove deeper and deeper into the program, he discovered his passion for pushing the technology’s limits and became widely known in the entertainment industry as a Vectorworks expert. Eventually, he began regularly providing training and consulting services with the software. “After I gave my first Vectorworks demo, I was on cloud nine,” said Woodward. “All these years, I’d been under the stage, behind the stage, pretty much anywhere but on center stage. It was my first time in the spotlight, and from there, the rest was history.” With his Vectorworks skills so advanced at this point, it was only logical that this was his next career move. In his new role, he intends to be a liaison to help communicate industry trends back to the team at Vectorworks, as well as help intermediate designers take their drawing skills to the next level. Brian Nicholson, ASLA, PLA, GRP, LEED AP, Senior Landscape Specialist at Vectorworks Growing up in the mountains in southern Colorado, Nicholson was ingrained with an appreciation for nature and the outdoors early in his childhood. Thus, he received an undergraduate degree in landscape horticulture with a concentration in design/construction from Colorado State University. This degree, along with multiple summers of construction experience, prepared him to own and operate an award-winning residential design/build firm in Denver. He later earned a master of landscape architecture at the University of Colorado Denver and began practicing urban design and landscape architecture internationally. After laying the groundwork for his career in landscape architecture, Nicholson quickly discovered his inclination for sustainability. His passion for eco-friendly design shines through in projects from his past 18-plus years of experience in horticulture, landscape architecture and construction administration for firms like studioINSITE, RNL and Wenk Associates. Nicholson has applied his sustainable expertise to a variety of projects, including international community master plans, institutional campuses, municipal buildings, streetscapes and residential homes. For one of his most notable projects, he worked as the lead landscape designer for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Research Support Facility, which was designed to be net-zero energy and achieved LEED platinum certification and sustainable SITES gold certification. He also handled the site construction administration for additional projects across 35 acres on NREL’s campus. Currently, Nicholson maintains multiple landscape architect licenses and is an accredited green roof professional and LEED accredited professional. He also serves as the ASLA Colorado chapter president where he develops value-added programs for members and advocates for the chapter at the national level. Regarding his career move, Nicholson said, “Technology is my passion, whether it’s design software or products incorporated in my designs. I’m constantly looking at tools on the leading edge of sustainability, like Vectorworks, so I’ve had my eye on the company for a while.” As a result, when the job opened up, Nicholson said it was a perfect fit for where he wanted to take his career. Nicholson is very experienced with Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp and the Adobe suite from prior roles, and he’s eager to dive into Landmark. His long-term goals are to expand the adoption of Landmark within the landscape architecture, design and urban planning industry.

Started in 1969, KCACTF is a national program designed to celebrate college theater in the United States, and help students develop their creative and technical skills. Each year, KCACTF hosts eight regional festivals for college theater students across the United States.
