  1. It it currently not possible to have a site model modifier that does a form like the images I attach. I have tried doing this with a 3D Polygon placed under the DTM-Modifier class but the site model reads 3D polygons as contour lines. The pad with slope doesn't provide the form I want to create either. I have also tried creating a 3D Polygon, converting it to Nurbs then via the 3D power pack>Create Surfaces from Curves, then Create Interpolated Surfaces, and then placing that in the DTM-Modifier class but then the site model converts that into a mesh with little information that does not contain the form that I want. So the best way to create this strange shaped would be with the subdivision surface. I hope one day one can use this object as a site modifier. Or it could also be created via an interpolated surface but then the site model should respect all vertices and not read the interpolated surface as quite a basic mesh when the interpolated surface is in the DTM-Modifier class. Maybe I'm totally wrong and doing this type of form in a terrain is possible, if so, I would be very glad if someone tells me how can this be done. This type of form occurs many times in the real world, for example you have a ramp that's connected to a street with an incline and to a garage that it's entry level is straight...

    Site Model Interpolation

I'm wondering if I'm missing something in terms of the control we have over site modelling in Vectorworks. I've attached a screengrab of a site model I have created. Blue lines are the 3D polyline contours I have drawn and set to 0.5m height intervals, the green lines are the contour lines generated by the site model calculation by Vectorworks, using my blue lines as input data. I have two big issues with this output, namely: I want the model to EVENLY interpolate between the contour lines - for example on the hill to the bottom of the screen grab, I want the mounding to extend evenly to the left, I don't want flat platforms between each level. I want the contours to actually follow the curves I have drawn, and not truncate my contours in large angular lines!! (As seen in the middle of the screengrab.) Is there anything I can do, aside from draw contours at really tight intervals to reduce the visibility of the problem? Is this just how the site modelling algorithm works? I understand the need for a mathematical algorithm, but this results in a fundamentally incorrect site model I can't really use for anything in terms of BIM or production information, as it isn't giving me smooth grades. I'm sure I could fudge it for visualisation purposes, but I need an accurate technical model I can issue in IFC form to provide information for collaboration and also construction. I've turned on mesh smoothing in document properties, which makes the rendered model appear slightly less angular, and also turned on contour smoothing display, but I need an accurate model in terms of BIM compliance and I'm not sure I have this control outwith doing an excessive amount of contour drawing. Is Vectorworks the wrong software for this, or am I missing something? Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated. Lisa
  3. Hi, I struggling to understand the best way to place my site model with respect real world elevation (feet above sea level). If my base elevation for the project is 150.0', I am currently setting Story 1, Level: "Finish Floor" to 150'. Is this even right? It feels a little weird to have the whole project floating so high up above the XY plane. Should Story 1 start at 0", and the design layer start at 150'? I then wonder if I should also relate my site model's design layer with respect to Story 1. Currently, I'm placing my site model on a design layer that is not attached to any story, and set to a 0" elevation. The Site model topography is drawn at its real world values, so the whole model floats up above along with all the story related building assemblies. Anyway, I would really love some feedback on what the best practice is for all this. Thanks! Matt

    Vectorworks is closing my contours

I've successfully imported polyline contours from AutoCAD and created a Digital Terrain Model. However, where the contours run off the boundary of my project, Vectorworks is closing them with the nearest contour of the same elevation. This creates a vertical "wall" of terrain/contours at the edge of my site that I don't want. (see photo). I assume it does this because Vectorworks places 3D Loci on top of the polylines and uses the loci, not the polylines, to generate the model. Is there some way to avoid this, or some way to correct it? I tried to "Edit Site Model" and then slice out the connecting portion of the contour, but it seems to revert when I exit the Site Model editor. What am I missing?
  5. Hey there, is there a workaround to extract the texture pads on a site model for further use? I cloud imagine to generate solids via marionette from the 3D polygons (for BIM use). I know it is possible to have a 3D hardscape, but with serious drainage planning i can't get what i want. Cheers...
  6. At the Landmark 2019 Stake Elevation Z values are in error (always 0 values). In earlier version the problem could be usually solved, if I changed the stake Mode from "Include as site model data" to "Set elevation to Site Model", but now it won't work. Also the existing Stakes from earlier version, which now should be updated, do not update.
  7. We often work with site models to visualize projects and there has always been an issue with sending items to the surface. Sometimes it works and other times, no matter what I try, it doesn't Curious if anyone has determined best practices for this or experienced the same issue and have a work around?

    Site Model Modifier Conflicts

Hello all, I have been working a site model for a quarry. I have two sets of survey data, a topographical survey taken in 2017 in PDF form, and a topo survey from 2018 of the same site in DWG form. I turned the DWG into a site model, and have added in site modifiers of the 2017 data by adding stake points and contours, so that I can compare the two surveys to see how the quarry has changed. I have encountered an issue with a particular contour in the site modifiers, and this contour has flagged up 424 modifier conflicts. I cannot get my head around why only this contour has the problems, and upon clicking the warning triangle it states 'Pads Intersect', however, I have not used any pads, only contours and stake points. Does anybody have any suggestions as to why this is happening? As you can see from the zoomed in images, the modifier conflict warnings are not actually sat on top of 'crossovers' and you can see from other contours that these are not problems. I have attached pictures to help, with the zoomed out image showing only the proposed contours, and the zoomed in showing both (green and blue) proposed and existing. Thanks Joe
  9. I've been doing a lot more work with Site Models and have come across a couple of situations that would make for a much better experience. Could we have the proposed contours stop at the site modifier defining the limit of grading. This would be more like how it's done traditionally and would read a heck of a lot better. Can we have a tool that would add contour labels where you direct it to by drawing a line across the model with control over middle or top of contours? The current labels seem to generate based on number of vertices and end up in the worst spots. Looking forward to seeing the continued maturation of the software!

    Tips for reducing file size

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anybody had any tips for reducing file size for large site models other then the purge command? At the moment my file size is above 400MB and is really struggling to complete simple tasks...it will complete them but at a very slow pace. I am new to site modelling in Vectorworks 3D, however I am aware how heavy the files can get from working in 2D and I am coming to the unfortunate conclusion that this I just something you have to deal with when working in this programme. However, any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you

    Site model disappears

Hello there, Very urgently need some help! Im working with vectroworks 2017 and my site model keeps getting large chunks taken out of it (i.e. the contours are automatically depressing) and I have no idea why. Please see attached images as to what I am talking about. Is there any way to rectify this? I have a presentation in two days and this is not something I have done via a site modifier? I can't seem to edit the proposed contours either, or it doesn't seem to be an option for vectrowork 2017?? Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.

    Cant edit proposed site contours

Hi all, I have a query concerning site model contours. I am trying to edit my proposed contours in VW 1017 but when I go to right click, the options to edit does not show up...and I have no way of directly editing them. Has anybody else had this problem? Any advice would be really helpful, thank you.

    DTM > Site Model directly?

I have four DWGs from Albemarle County's (VA) extensive GIS system. Two different grid blocks, mass points and breaklines for each. I can bring them into a file and they show at elevation when the view is rotated. I can get them all onto the same design layer, but how does one use these together in creating a site model? I could generate something with just masspoints but I'm betting the breaklines are there for a reason. In trying a test, it didn't seem to comprehend the data by default. I also have the 4' topos and a site survey of a much smaller area with stakes for elevation points that were measured by the survey crew. They didn't do a lot of the paddocks which is our focus in this project, so trying to get better than 4' data before I just go shoot it myself. Screenshot of area in question attached before I merged them to one design layer (hence the left being grayed out) VW Designer 2017 if it matters.

Road won't cut through site model fully

Hi there, Could anybody please give me any advice as to why, when I create a road (with "create pad" selected) it does not cut all the way through my site model. Although it looks like it has worked in 2D, the 3D model appears to go through the site rather then cut it away...? Please see attached screenshot below. Any advice would be appreciated. Kind regards.

Site Model Crop | Error on Surface

Hi guys, good afternoon, I attach to this post the VW file. The project relates to a road rehabilitation (creation of a walkable course, parking area, etc.). I added the stakes of the topographic survey, created the surface and then added the intervention limit. To that point on, the surface started having 3d errors. I tried to simplify the limit, but the errors kept going. Any suggestions? How to you usually faced this problems? Best regards, João Rodrigues 2017_03_02_ACESSO_MARINHA.vwx
  16. Persistent problem here...sometimes when I create a section viewport from a site model the section component (of the site model) will be 'filled'. Other time it wont be. For no apparent reason! I can't for the life of me figure out what the problem is. Is this a known problem? It changes randomly and without warning. Typically I use: Advanced Section Properties - Attributes - Separate Cross Sections [Attribute Class - Section Style]. You can see in the attached screen grab the South Elevation does not have a fill below. The settings on each of the viewports are identical. The 3D display settings for the model is '3D mesh solid'. As I've invested a lot of time building an accurate site model and assistance will be appreciated.

    VW 2018 site model crashes

I have just started using VW 2018 landmark and noticed that when site modifiers conflict (touching) that I get VW crashing instead of the usual modifier conflict count in the OIP. Anyone else finding this?
  18. It would be great if the site model could have different units than the file. We often design buildings in imperial (file units) but have to work in metric for site purposes. Dual units for the stake object would also be great.

    Pond Modelling and Volumes

Hi, I am looking to model a simple pond / swale but can't seem to figure out the best way to do it. I can create a site model using the highest and lowest contour easily, and that gives me the shape I desire but the volume is incorrect as it measure that which is on the outside of the pond and not, if you can imagine, what the pond can hold. Any tips for creating this? Many Thanks S
  20. As a continuing story on the Drone import data question I contacted another firm today and was thrilled to see that they can provide me with the contours I need to construct a site model. Waiting on the level of accuracy, but hoping it will + - 1'. Interestingly I can also import a mesh object and was given a sample to look at, can anyone tell me if this mesh object is usable within a site model? I did note that the texture import failed. Also the file is 430 mg which is pretty big so I'm not keen on working with a slow, clunky file. @Art Vyou might be interested in this.
  21. Hi I'm having a bit of a challenge with a site model which I've created from a shape file which generates 3d polys. The model works well in 3d but I don't get any labels on my 2d contours? Before creating the site model I double checked the 3d polygons and they have a z value.

    Site Model Alteration

Good night guys, I'm working a new project over a topographic survey and I want to change it based on a completely new design for its contours. As I'm working with another cad software, what I was thinking to do was to edit the site model by double-clicking on it, editing the "Proposed Site Model Contours" and pasting the imported 3D polys with elevation. Unfortunately, this way isn't working. Can you give me any advice on the best way to do this change: just create a new site model based on the new design of the contours (is there a way to "merge" site models?), edit the contours individually? I'm open to suggestions. Best regards!!!

    Importing 3d data from drone

Hi Everyone I have a question here that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I'm starting a project on a piece of agricultural land (creating a agri-tourism concept) which is about 10-15 acres in size. I'm in need of some accurate elevation data as well as some high definition images (overhead), a drone is one obvious choice. I have contacted a company that will fly a drone and collect data for me at a pretty reasonable price when compared to traditional surveying. This drone pilot uses a web based software to share this information with his clients, which I think is a pretty sensible approach. http://resources.dronedeploy.com/getting-started?utm_source=hs_automation&utm_medium=email&utm_content=53288874&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_927kOLGu-YsnBPuK3o_rF3UYgKfKJDm-bqgdqx-OeoY2-BxDVCjceb-C95fCtwxhrm-e-HsgQ5CZfc_qSIOoGzBh1OQ&_hsmi=53288874 My question is whether I can this exported data and make it useful within VW. I have provided a couple of shots from the drone Deploy website and I'm pretty sure that importing .dxf will give me some contours that I can work with. Can anyone confirm this? The service is $750+ 100/month for access to this online software which I imagine I'll use only once. I don't see the high definition image being an issue, but I'm unsure of the 3d data. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Crash Edit Site Model

Hello guys, Just starting to use VW Landmark 2018 with SP1 (PC Windows 10). Every time I edit the contours for the proposed site model (double-click in the site model - "Proposed Site Model Contours") I make the alterations and, when I exit the yellow window, VW just crashes, no error log, it goes straight for the Windows Error window. Same applies even if I don't do any alterations to the model. Anyone with the same error? Suggestions about what to do? Thanks, João Rodrigues
  25. In Tutorials it was recommended to first create a large Grade Limit around the Site to prevent the neighbored properties from changes. (Or will a property line object do something similar ?) 1. Looks like I can't nest Grade limits. I did my large property Grade Limit and a smaller Grade Limit around the building Pad. I thought the Building Grade Limit would limit the Building Pad and I could go on creating Modifiers on site around the Building, limited by the large Property Grade Limit. That doesn't seem to work. I may have had both Grade Limitss set to proposed. Would it work if I set the large GL to existing ? 2. If this does not work (nesting GLs), how should I do this ? Do the large GL around and try to control all Modifiers with (tedious) Retaining Edges ? (For example a Retaining Edge to get my "vertical" Cut for the Building Pad) 3. VW 2018 proposed Contour editing. Not sure*, but it looks that Contour Edits of a Contour that crosses a Grade Limit Area, would be reseted when I try to pull it over to the other side where it flows around the Grade Limit. Looks like even the changes made to the Contour outside of the Grade Limit would be reseted. (*Could be just due to a crash though) So can't I use a Grade Limit inside my property, when I want to Edit Contours ? Or do I have to edit Contours first and create the Grade Limit Modifier after the Contour edit only ?
