  1. Is it possible to generate a set height contour for a proposed model? For example, I have built a proposed site model. I don't know the footprint of the lake on the on my model in plan, but I do I know the water level on site is 29.150. So, if I could generate a poly line at this height around the model, i.e. a contour line, I would be able to see the footprint of what will essentially be the lake and calculate area / volume etc?
  2. I have an exceeding basic OS survey which I want to create a 3D model from. It has very few 3D locus points on the paved areas and some contours on the grass areas. I have converted the contour lines to be recognised as contours in Vectorworks and have said they are to effect the existing site model. Now when I select everything and choose to create a site model it just uses the locus points not the contours. So I have added on more locus points following the contours and in other locations where I know there is a kerb etc which is not shown on the levels information (copying and pasting original ones and changing the height in the object info to the height I want) But when I then select all and try to create a site model from survey information it doesn't use all the points. Some of them seem to be incorporated, but not all of them. What am I doing wrong?? SiteModelData.pdf
  3. Hi, I am using c ontours to make changes in my site. When I draw them as proposed and update the model (which is also showing proposed), the 3D-locust that the site model is built up (source data) of is still affecting the terrain. Why is it like this? I don't really want to delete the imported info cause I still want the original (existing) terrain to be correct ... Ill post some pictures below .. Thanks for help 🙂
  4. I imported shapefile contours from QGIS into vwx. Very happy with the nearly automatic georef process for this. Geometry came in as 2d polys with attached records in the OIP data tab. For the site model source contours, how does one convert the 2d polys to 3d with the z value assigned from the Elevation data field of the 2d poly? Thanks! -B
  5. Hello Is there a way to add regrading to a site model so that the amount of earth moved from existing to proposed is determined ? I have a sloping site, and would like to recontour with a dozer so that the general elevations are lowered so the lands match the heights along a road cut. The constant plane pad with a set slope is a start, but not nearly able to reproduce what I am looking for. The attached image is what I am after .... to draw a pad alongside the roadway and set the elevations at each point matching the road elevation ... I did NOT have much success drawing a 3Dpolygon along the roadway and across the lot, with the desired elevations, and then using it to modify ... it didnt affect the model ... I did set the class to site-dtm-modifier ... and it was in the layer modifying the model ... but no effect upon updating. Operator error is an obvious start. Any suggestions for doing this ? or alternative approaches ? ************************************************************************************ Steve Dimond, GSC, M.Sc., P.Eng., Prince Edward Island, Canada MacOS 10.13.6, MacBookPro mid 2015, 16 Gb Ram, Vectorworks v2019 Designer, Renderworks
  6. Hi all, I am having an issue with my site model. It is a simple model with only 7 3D polygons that have been used to create site model contours. Unfortunately, the model is skipping some of the contours and drawing straight lines instead (see image attached). The red lines are the 3D polys I have used, and the dashed green is the models interpretation. Is this simply the inherent VW 2019 model creation process doing this due to a lack of data, or is it a setting / something I can rectify? Any ideas would be great! Thanks Joe
  7. I've successfully imported polyline contours from AutoCAD and created a Digital Terrain Model. However, where the contours run off the boundary of my project, Vectorworks is closing them with the nearest contour of the same elevation. This creates a vertical "wall" of terrain/contours at the edge of my site that I don't want. (see photo). I assume it does this because Vectorworks places 3D Loci on top of the polylines and uses the loci, not the polylines, to generate the model. Is there some way to avoid this, or some way to correct it? I tried to "Edit Site Model" and then slice out the connecting portion of the contour, but it seems to revert when I exit the Site Model editor. What am I missing?
  8. Hi all, I have a query concerning site model contours. I am trying to edit my proposed contours in VW 1017 but when I go to right click, the options to edit does not show up...and I have no way of directly editing them. Has anybody else had this problem? Any advice would be really helpful, thank you.
  9. I'm trying to figure out how I can collect elevations and other site data necessary to make landscape models with 2' contoursby myself, without having to hire a surveyor for smaller/residential projects. Is it possible to use something like the Geneq isxBlue? If so, what else would I need besides the receiver, what kind of program would I also need to purchase to make the data useable? I'd really like to be able to use VW Landmark, but I just can't figure a good way to get useful data to work with. I'd like to be efficient as possible without having to get a degree in surveying. Is there a combination of devices like a laser level and GPS? Even that seems like a lot of extra work to enter points into VW Landmark, but if that is the best way, I'd like to know. Even if I got $20,000 + to buy a total station, could I learn to use that on my own and what else is needed to accompany it to collect useful data? thanks for all your advice Eddie
  10. While VW contour label placement is better than it used to be it still isn't user friendly in my opinion. I would like to be able to draw a polyline across the contour map and have a contour label placed wherever the polyline intersects with a contour line! Several other survey programs incorporate that feature. Currently I manually place contour labels using the text tool just because it is just too cumbersome to go in and delete multiple random labels and then drag the remaining ones to the correct location. Also please give us the ability to set the decimal precision for contour labels without affecting the decimal precision for the rest of the drawing. This is another reason I still manually enter contour labels. I guarantee Vectorworks will get rave reviews from most people who label contours if they give us this kind of requested control over contour labels. If you agree please vote this wishlist item UP ! :-)
  11. I love VW 2018 with one BIG exception. I can no longer right click on a site model and view or edit the source data! I called tech support and they said that feature went away with the 2018 release. I may very well go back to 2017 for this feature. Ask anyone who regularly imports survey data and generates topo maps and they will all tell you that it is very important to be able to go in and delete or edit bad points. Why oh why would Vectorworks remove a very basic important feature like this? Hopefully tech support was wrong and someone can tell me how to edit survey points after creation of a site model. Thank you, Glenn Troyer
  12. Troubleshooting - I have a site model created from 3d polys and some stake points. Generally this has worked, though in one particular area the site model is coming up with some unexplained geometry... See attached image, showing input survey data for terrain (in red) and existing site model contours (green dashed). Any ideas on why this has happened / how I can fix it?!
  13. Hi there, I have created a site model from topo survey data, and intend to make significant modifications to this to create a proposed site model for issue to contractors to build from. In terms of output, I'm looking to send a set of 3d poly contour lines of my new proposed model in dwg, as this is the format they have requested. Is there an easy way to generate / export this accurately?
  14. Attached is an image of a staircase with landings and a retaining wall on one side. The lower staircase was easy, just 2 sloping contours and the adjacent pads. The upper part required a lot more work because of the landings and the sloping terrain adjacent. Could these sloping contours be automatically generated as a feature added to the stairs? Alternatively, could you give the contour the operability of the 3D polygon so i can snap it to the edges of the stairs with the correct Z height (ie not have to set z height in the OIP)?
