  1. Hi all! If I create a group in VW, the group will be assign to the active class. Is there a way to have a class that is automatically used for new groups? Like with walls, even if I am in another class, the walls are always assign to the class "walls". Thanks! Francesco
  2. I've created a new file with walls. I attached radiators to some of the walls and in doing so, the properties of the walls change to HVAC equipment class. I've changed the walls back to be wall class and removed the radiators from the walls but my walls are all appearing in black in the GL render. How do I change this back? I've checked the class properties and they show the walls should be white but the walls remain black! Any suggestions?
  3. What are your experiences with doing wall area take offs within a worksheet. I see that it calculates the length of a wall from the center line points. Has anyone dealt with the inaccuracies this affords? For instance, if I have a 10' x 10' room with 6" thick walls, the wall length (which it uses for area) is only 9'-6" long (subtract half the wall thickness each end). Doesn't this cause a problem with rounding area? Do you use a factor to account for this? Do you have any preferred ways of querying the worksheet for the wall data? I can come up with a work around, but others with more experience with this function could really help me save time. Thank you.
  4. Hi, Super basic question I guess, but I can't seem to find the reason why this doesn't work. I'm trying to add a slab to my walls, but nothing shows up. Please refer to short clip I added. Warm regards and thanks all! Martin Slab question.mp4
  5. Can you put symbols or PIO's in just one (or specified) components of a wall? e.g. in the attached image, I'd like to insert a column into the CMU blockwork component in the middle of the wall - like column 'C' which is not actually inserted, but 'on top' of the wall in 2D. The only insert options I find are in the Object Info palette : 'Centre line' (column A) and 'Left edge' or 'Right Edge' (Column B), both of which are inserted / offset relative to the entire wall, and not the preferred wall component, and create a hole in all the wall components... Am I missing something? Thanks, hope all are keeping well in these strange times, and best wishes to you and your families. S
  6. Anyone got any ideas how to connect this wall & roof so the components follow through? Vectorwork's biggest downfall for me is its lacking ability to connect slab, roof and wall components to each other. It would be great if there was a join tool that worked between these items.
  7. Two wall tool requests. Walls from Polylines: I would like to have custom Walls that can be generated from a closed poly-line (as opposed to the wall tool that uses two-point "lines") We work with concrete on a lot of our projects and the workaround to make varying thickness or shaped walls is very cumbersome. I can see a simple wall tool edit that can generate shape from a poly-line OR a wall component that can have a "Taper/Shaped/Custom Outline" in the dialogue similar to tapered slab components to generate the geometry. "Free-Standing" Wall Components Free-standing wall components that can "glue-on" to walls. For example, if one room of a project has wood slats on furring strips, I'd have to make a wall type for each wall (exterior, interior, bathroom plumbing walls, that ALSO have furring strips on the side face that room). But I'd rather create a wall that has wood slats and furring strips only and apply it only to the walls facing that room. I would do this with tile, interior finishes, etc as well. Basically, re-orient how VW thinks of wall assemblies to align to how real-world assemblies are realized.
  8. I’m trying to connect the roof and wall components but it doesn’t seem to be working. As you can see from the image attached, the gabled roof sort of works as it is understanding where to offset the joists, sheathing and insulation (in relation to the wall) but the other roofs are not working. I’ve associated the walls to the roofs. I’ve tried manually offsetting components but this doesn’t seem efficient when there are many walls. Maybe I’m missing something but it’d be great to get some opinions. I essentially want the cladding, wall insulation and sheathing to run up to the roof finish. 19.07.31 PLAN TEST.vwx
  9. I use the wall tool to draw a good portion of my theatre architecture and scenic elements (how I was taught). When I export to dwg for some collaborators, all of the walls are not exported as 3D objects and are only visible in plan view. Is there something I can do to make them show up?
  10. I'm building a library of walls based on the popular CSR Redbook wall types for our Australian users of Vectorworks. How do I know which Classification I should use? Omniclass, Uniclass etc. or can they remain unclassified??? Any ideas or pointers will be helpful.
  11. Hi is there a decent way to use walls on slopes . The wall should folllow a parallel height to the ground . fixed height on starting and ending point. but should follow down a hill.. if I send my wall to the surface to my model, it follows perfectly on the bottom the slope.but not on the top.. is there any way not to correct it manually ? thanx in advance
  12. Project sharing walls randomly disappear, or shows up in one users Working file, and yet not in another users Working file (although both are refreshed and up-to-date). We have had a number of incidents where walls simply gone missing, randomly on different floors in our 10 stories bldg (currently being shared via project sharing and 4-5 users using it). For example it could show up in one users file, but not another, even though all refreshed and saved-committed etc. Other incidents have been where some symbols have updated fine to the latest updates someone made, but not other, i.e. some not being 'pushed through' to the project file even though saved and committed. Our workaround has been to save a new project sharing file from one of the users working files, but this delays/slow down the working process, and means spending a lot of time trying to find what / what hasn't updated / been pushed through. We are currently using VW 2017, is this something that has been corrected within the VW2018 sp3 ? kind regards anton
  13. In the past I created an exterior wall (e.g. 2x6 stud wall) + a separate wall for masonry veneer (4" + airspace). This requires separate symbols (or breaks) for each wall to install a door or window that cuts through both. Messy and time consuming. Is there a way to use VW wall types with components to do the same thing? I can create a wall with a masonry veneer component that stops at 4' above the slab, but then there is no finish material above 4'. How do you make one wall that has siding above the masonry veneer using the VW wall tools? The advantage will be if 3D door and window symbols will insert into each component (siding and masonry) correctly. TIA
  14. This may be possible to do - but I have never managed to find it: What I would like to be able to do is the ability to drag individual components from say one wall style to another. The reason being, in order to create a style you either have to start with one of the predetermined styles (which, no offence intended - are pretty useless) and add / delete new components at the same time as remembering what class, fill, hatch, rendering style etc. you want for each component you wish to change. What would be the ideal is to move from a generic wall / floor or roof style to a custom style without having to go round the entire building and start from scratch. There are far too many different custom styles in the libraries - it is the components which matter. I don't know how the engineers intended styles to work, but would it not be possible to 'drag' a component from the resource manager into the style (and bringing with it all of its attributes that have been set previously). Remember level of detail is critical in the overall process and I only want to move on to a higher level of detail when the project is ready to do so, the problem is that each style (whether wall, floor or roof) has to be created in advance and once it is created - it is very inflexible. Adding components to a style is not straightforward, you have to know all the attributes (I.e they need to be written down on a piece of paper or something) and added manually for each component - could they not just be dragged from one style (or a component library) to another with the attributes already attached. Items like plasterboard - should be on the same class for the entire building (unless you are specifically wanting different types - fire rated / acoustic etc.), so we should be able to drag a component from either a library or from one style to another (wall, floor, roof etc.). If I'm working in Uniclass (or any other standard which I want to use) - I want to be able to bring components in with the right classes and attributes, not spent hours ensuring that each component is correctly matched (I have a view that this is one of the reasons why so few people use standard classes). Also, when creating anything in Vectorworks, it would be really useful to be able to select using a 'pull down' instead of having to create using a blank text box each time.
  15. Hello Jim, I've had a similar problem, but with VWX 2019. (I'm kicking myself for installing it BEFORE reading on these forums about the Mojave issues!). Every time I select a single wall object, I get eternal rainbow wheel / application not responding and I have to force quit. If I marquee-select two or more walls, it's fine. Or if I marquee-select one wall and any other object, it's fine. But click-selecting one individual wall crashes me every time, no matter the file (even the extremely simple file uploaded below). -Yesterday I un-installed and re-installed VWX 2019 (so Vectorworks is up to date, with all service packs installed) -Mojave is up to date (osx 10.14.2, see attached system info) I understand that most of the bugs are Apple bug and not VWX bugs. But even after this upgrade yesterday, I'm still having the same problem. And I'm not seeing any threads on here discussing a problem with selecting single walls. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Brandon VWX test file.vwx iMac - B. Stewart - 12.14.18.spx
  16. Hi all, In some situations, joining wall components is mighty difficult and even impossible. There are no good workarounds since using multiple separate walls generate their own issues and is not "BIM". Wall end caps are sometimes problematic as well and do not fit well into wall joining situations. Would it not be possible to be able to stretch wall components to where they should be? Simple end-of-component dragging. Please see the below, these kind of joins are very difficult to use and maintain by using the standard component join. Maybe component-join functionality could be improved in stead, currently they don't always "obey" what the user says. Sometimes it is crucial to be able to manually stop a wall component at some certain position, eg. the white wall component should stop before the green bearing strip. Currently the bearing strip is in front of the wall covering it up, howerer at dwg export this is revealed -> the engineer is confused. Component priorities have been suggested before, maybe those could work as well. The core issue is that we should have absolute, working control where any wall component ends/joins.
  17. we have a problem with vectorworks 2018 SP5: Files we created with old osx el capitan computers (macminis) can be opened and viewed with new mac minis (2018) mojave, but when you click on a wall, VW crashes. We did a clean install of vectorworks, we also downloaded the SP5 from the internet and installed it. Is this a known issue?
  18. Is there a way to define a wall type with a stone skirt and stucco above, without the stucco being added into the entire width of the wall? even with defining the top and bottom offsets, the wall thickness adds everything together .... thanks! stone skirt question.pdf
  19. Is there such a thing as a wall ID tag in VW? I can't seem to find anything. If there is where do I find it? I would imagine it to function or rather appear like the pic attached.
  20. Hi folks, did some one successfully use the wall component function in an ifc-export? Neither ifc 2x3 nor ifc 4 does anything for me. What am I doing wrong? Where is it supposed to be found in an ifc-file? Vectorworks Help doesn't offer anything remotely helpful. Regards, Eddi
  21. Hey, so I am a complete beginner at Vision, but through the help of the lovely forums and videos and instructions, I've started to get the hang of this. One problem now though: my beams of light appear to be going through walls and I have no idea how to fix this! I have already made sure my textures cast and receive shadows in my VWX file, as well as my lights. Any ideas?
  22. Hi, Is it possible to have a 3D brick texture on walls? so the brick is sticking 2 cm out of the wall.
  23. Hi, I have two different walls on top of each other. Is it possible to do so, when i move one of them, the other follow.
  24. Hello everyone ! A few months ago (version 2017) i created a topic mentioning about the node Wall left walls unconnected when you feed a list of vertices into it's inputs. Now (in 2018) i realized that the Wall node is still presenting the same issue... I wonder if there's any form to join walls via Marionette without having to re-program the node... Thanks for any tip...

    Windows

Perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way. I have a mid-rise residential building that I'm working on and I'm having to recreate the elevations by hand. Each "Window" consists of (see elevation01) fixed lower window, vertical pivot above, fixed larger window with louvered opening for PTAC. I would like to take these four elements and combine them into one symbol that I can insert into walls as this assembly appears on 50 of the 57 units. Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreicated.
