  1. As a scenic designer, rarely do I have walls parallel or at 90 to the proscenium. So what is the best way to create a plate of elevations (front, section and plan views?) When creating a section I know I can do it from the top/plan view. Is there a way to rotate the view of the viewport other than entering degrees in the dialogue box? I tried set working plane, but that didn't work. But many times I might have walls at "random" angles - (52.36 or whatever). Seems like there must be a better way? Seems like this should be a basic function of VW - creating viewports from a 3D model, but this seems not to be addressed very well. thanks.,
  2. After a recent career move, I am back at working on VW2015 (MAC) after being on VW2018 previously. I am experiencing what I can only describe as a serious bug in viewport annotations for the first time. Text, linework, dimensions… annotated jump and shift position within the viewport, it can happen as easy as returning to the file the next day or moving the viewports around. The shifting is not always at unison; elements can go ‘all over the place’. This has caused tremendous strain to my performance to the level of a project successful completion being compromised. I have a hunch it could be related to rotated ‘view plan’ in design layers as well as copied annotations from one viewport to another retaining some sort of fixated origin point. But there seems not to be a single cause of the problem. I contacted our local representative but basically was told “bad luck” for using such an “old version” of the software. I have expressed my desire to upgrade within the company but I am afraid they will wait for VW2020 to do so. Any help / advice in solving this issue will be appreciated…
  3. I love saved views! Viewports are critical to anything but the smallest projects. How to make them better? My basic set of saved views are essentially copies of my basic sheet viewports. But as a project gets more complex the viewport settings change with new class/layers, overrides or whatever. So a common work step is to update those saved views to match. Why not have it automated? Aren't viewports really just saved views on a sheet? Sure you can get there, but many clicks and much time can be saved by having every viewport show in the saved view list and track with those changes! A sub list could be links to the annotations for those viewports. But that would only save time and frustration...
  4. My workflow is: I make changes to my model, I've set up several sheet layers, using cameras, to show the views I need, and I've set the render style for those. But I have to click and wait for each one to render before going onto the next one. Would be great to have some kind of batch render setting so I could set them all going without having to do them manually. (Have searched, couldn't find a duplicate - apologies if there is one!)
  5. Hi, 2018 keeps driving to a complete unusable halt in my sheet layers after introducing a 3rd or 4th viewport. My drawings are pretty light and are not too complex and only rendering in wireframe (to consider another rendering format is unthinkable) the program then becomes unusable with massive delays, jerky zoom and content disappearing when zoom is halted. The same file in 2017 works fine, is this a known issue with 2018? A quick check on the system shows CPU running @6% and RAM only @ 8gb of 16gb
  6. hi call me daft but is there anyway to see your viewport crop in the design layer after it is made? i thought this used to be a feature but can no longer make it work. currently in VW2017
  7. Hi all, just a quick helping hand being requested as I've deployed VWA 2018 onto our computers, but my own workstation is the only one upgraded to High Sierra on the Mac. The problem is when I copy a viewport from one sheet to another in the same file, it becomes a PDF! As such, I can no longer edit it as normal. Is this a bug, or did I mess up a setting that I can change back to stop this behavior? Thanks in advance for any guidance!
  8. I'd like an option to copy and paste objects from another file but without importing Classes. The information would come in as an object that behaves like a Viewport, with its own Class visibilities. The difference being that you wouldn't need to create a Workgroup Reference, nor import all the data from a Design Layer when creating a Design Layer Viewport (both of which I find eventually weigh a VW file down). When co-ordinating with engineer's drawings, for instance, I tend to copy and paste just the bits I need rather than creating a WGR and Viewport. The downside is it brings in their Classes. If they have a lot this can impact quite a bit on Class navigation.
  9. Does anybody have issue with creating a sectional viewport of U shape stair on to sheet? Please see attached image It looks good in 3d perspective or in plan but when a sectional viewport is created is starting to mess up .
  10. I'd like to be able to double-click into a Viewport with Hidden Line rendering and have an option to edit the lines. Including deleting, changing length and changing thickness. I'm happy for these changes to then be obliterated if I update the viewport, but it's meant just as a final touch-up workflow for those little niggly bits that are extremely hard to model out. For instance this request is motivated mostly by those pesky lines that show up where you have a wall meeting another wall parallel to it but that is already L-joined to another perpendicular wall.
  11. I guess I am completely confused now, I have been using viewports uniquely in Sheet Layers but I notice that you can also create viewports in Design Layers. Can someone please explain to me what are the plus and minus of doing it one way vs. the other? Thank you so much
  12. Is it possible to create views with a model cut with clip cubes while having other viewports showing complete models? I have elevations viewports in OpenGL (rendering for clip cubes) and details in 3d that I would like to isolate using the clip cube. If I leave the clip cube option on then both viewports will show clipped views of the model and the detail. Is is possible to avoid this "overall " effect. Thank you
  13. I just started using 2017 and noticed that when I add a viewport to a sheet later, it automatically comes with a label. I have not been able to find a way to delete this label. Would appreciate any solutions as I don't need to label every viewport. Thank you. I"m working on a MacBook Pro
  14. We are using Vectorworks 2016 (Architect) on Mac. One particular file has started deleting viewports from the Sheet layers when we export them. This feels like a glitch. The Navigation pane suggests that the viewports still exist - but they are no longer on the sheet layer than the Navigation pane says that they are on. I've no idea where to even start diagnosing this problem - any assistance greatly appreciated! Sam
  15. What is the easiest way to copy a rendered viewport and turn it into a bitmap. I do not want to re render every time I print so I reset my viewports to wireframe and keep them off to the side in the sheet layer and only update them when I have time. I want to keep the perspective viewports so don't just want to flatten them. Thanks in advance.
  16. Hello, I was wondering whether anybody else has been having issues with design layer/reference viewports after converting 2016 to 2017. We have a set of drawings where the crop is not working. As we zoom in we can see the other objects outside of the crop. (see screen grab) This happens whether we are using the existing crop or a new crop. I have tried using different classes etc.. but this doesn't seem to help. If you have any ideas it would be gratefully appreciated. Many Thanks James
  17. Is there a way to use a referenced drawing in black & white only? I want to bring in the architect's backgrounds into my drawings as a reference, then annotate viewports with my own information (position of light fixtures etc.). To make my own drawings clearer, I want to set the architectural drawings to black and white only, then annotate them with my information (position and shape of light fixtures & circuit references) in a colour, so that this information stands out on screen (but still gives me the option to print everything in black & white) However, if I set a viewport to black and white (in the Advanced settings), then all annotations are automatically black and white, too. If I go back to the referenced drawing, and set the document preferences to black & white, then this seems to affect the on-screen display of that file only, as when I then reference or update the drawing into my file, all of the class/layer colour information faithfully returns & I am back to where I started. This is maddening me; surely there must be a simple way to display the referenced drawing in black and white, without manually editing the architect's file to set all layers & classes to black and white & I am just missing it?
  18. Hi I'm trying to show 4 viewports from inside a room i've modeled. I remember seeing in vectorworks there is a tool i can use that has 4arrows(Up , Down, Left, Right) and i place it in the room and it will generate the 4 viewports automatically. The only issue is I dont know what it's called and i cant find it in the tool sets. I'm hoping i didn't dream this up and one of you know what i'm talking about. Thanx
  19. Hi there, Does anyone know the export settings (I'm on 2015 designer) to export a DWG with both 2D & 3D elements? I have 5 viewports to 3d objects & they dont seem to be exporting , only the annotations. I would like to keep the format of the sheet, with all the annotations etc. Thanks, Liz
  20. Hey, I am setting up quite a few working drawings in sheets. I have all of my comments I need already drawn up in 3D. When I go to change the view in the viewport from plan to left, right etc - the object I am trying to capture disappears off into the distance somewhere meaning I have to edit the crop on my viewport. Sometimes its moved so far I can't even see it. This is time consuming & frustrating - anyone have any ideas as to how I speed this work flow up? Thanks all Liz
  21. Looking for the best way of drawing the above. Using 'interior elevation viewports' I tend to draw the lines in annotation which is fine, but must be an easier way. Have used 'extrude along path' previously for decorative profiles which works well but is fiddly around doors. Is there away of utilizing wall tool for these profiles?
  22. Hi there. I'm having a persistent issue with my viewports in sheet layers I have set up. The files are set up as follows; DESIGN FILE: SECTIONS PLOT FILE: SECTIONS The design file contains the drawn information and the plot file contains the sheet layer (plot sheet) with the design file referenced into it. I will set up my plot file correctly with my viewports referencing the relevant layers and it will appear to work for some time. After coming back to the file after a couple of day, the referenced information will of appeared to move miles out of location, meaning I need to either redefine my crop extents and drag the information back onto the sheet or simply redo the viewports from scratch. The design file isn't moving location. This can happen again and again, despite however many times I set up the viewports and don't alter the design file. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this to happen? I've only noticed it since updating to vectorworks 2017 and converting my drawing files to 2017. I have the 2 service packs installed as well. Any help would be much appreciated. Regards. Sam
  23. I am looking for the best way to set up views of elevation drawings in my orthographic model views; front, rear, etc. These are drawings from a designer with different; CAD, workflows. I hoped I might do them as viewport references in a vertical working plane so that when he makes an update change in elevation in 2D, I can then compare to with the model, and ensure its coordination. Thanks!
  24. Some of my line markers are not displaying when shown via a viewport in a sheet layer. They display perfectly in the design layer, but disappear, or are turned white?, in the viewport in the dismay layer. What should I do? peterfrc
  25. Hi -- I am referencing Part "P" into Assembly "A" I have classes / layers in "P" that I want to hide / show in different viewports in "A". How do I go about this ? When I go to the "Layers" or "Classes" visabilites in the Viewport dialogue box - I don't see the referenced layers / classes. Only the local ones. I don't want to control from the referenced viewport object of "P" - as I don't want it to be for ALL viewports in "A". Hope this makes sense Thanks!
