  1. Hi We are looking for a way to calculate and visualize the Cut and Fill for each separate stage within the site modification process - this from an ARCHITECT's viewpoint. The theoretical approach is: Step 1 - Removal of the existing landscape As the existing site consists of hardscapes and softscapes these areas need to be removed first. a) Calculation: Based on a 2D plan one can calculate in the worksheet the amount of soil/debris that needs to be removed by multiplying the area by the depth. b) Visualization: In the 2D plan of the existing landscape the polygons can be converted to 3D polys with their Z-height set according to the depth as estimated in step 1-a. (Before converting to 3D polys the polygons are offset by a distance of fe. 10 cm) This results in a Site Model which can be used as a base to start the actual Cutting and Filling. Step 2 - 'Cutting' the site according to the proposed design - Draw the Grade limit for each hole/trench - Draw the Pad per hole/trench. Name the Pad in the OIP. => for calculation: each Pad can be separately listed by name in the worksheet showing Cut volume - in the case of more than 1 layer subsoil type one can draw a second pad within the boundaries of the first pad - name this Pad appropriately and add this in the calculation for differentiation Step 3 - Forming/pouring footings and foundations Within the Architect module the option to use a wall as a site modifier is not available. Footings and foundations are drawn using the Wall tool. These can be added to the calculation sheet if needed. The question 🤨 Step 4 - 'Filling' the holes/trenches around the foundations What would be an convenient way to draw the fills? 3D Modelling tools? Which properties of the 'fill objects' can then be used to add to the calculation worksheet? By updating the worksheet subsequently it could be the 'tool' to check what will result as spoil etc. Thanks for reading this through!   3. Hi guys, The innovations introduced in the grade object are fantastic, massive development. But then I raise the question: why won't merge the grade and the site modifiers? Grades doesn't allow polylines or arcs and even only using grades, we always need the grade limit (a site modifier itself). Site modifiers doesn't allow working as a coherent network. Am I missing something on having these two tools instead of one solid tool with all the features?
  4. Hi, I am using c ontours to make changes in my site. When I draw them as proposed and update the model (which is also showing proposed), the 3D-locust that the site model is built up (source data) of is still affecting the terrain. Why is it like this? I don't really want to delete the imported info cause I still want the original (existing) terrain to be correct ... Ill post some pictures below .. Thanks for help 🙂
  5. Is anybody also experiencing issues with site model skirt color showing up in section viewport not respecting cut profile? It look to me that this is happening only when section vp through site model - snapshot has cut plane along Y axis (vertical on screen). I attach screen shot with first one section vp showing only site model itself (class with snapshot off) and one with site model - snapshot on (and site model class off). I have tried and recreated anew snapshots but no success...
  6. I've had this appear about as often as not. When attempting to grade across an object, random elements from the existing grade seem to override modifiers? I've tried to create 3D polys between the contours but these just regenerate around anything I try to do to "fix" them. Red are my site modifiers, generally going well...
  7. Hello everyone, I was wondering if anybody had any tips for reducing file size for large site models other then the purge command? At the moment my file size is above 400MB and is really struggling to complete simple tasks...it will complete them but at a very slow pace. I am new to site modelling in Vectorworks 3D, however I am aware how heavy the files can get from working in 2D and I am coming to the unfortunate conclusion that this I just something you have to deal with when working in this programme. However, any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you
  8. Please make site model modifiers capable of having a pattern or hatch applied. Modifiers show textures in 3-d views, but apparently can't show any kind of fill in a 2-d view. That means if I make a driveway on a site, for example, I have to copy the shape from the site modifier and add it as an annotation to get any kind of fill on it. This is ridiculous. I would like to see Vectorworks scrap the entire site model altogether, and go back to the drawing board, and create a tool that can be used easily and intuitively.
  9. We often work with site models to visualize projects and there has always been an issue with sending items to the surface. Sometimes it works and other times, no matter what I try, it doesn't Curious if anyone has determined best practices for this or experienced the same issue and have a work around?

Wishing for: Enhanced Site Model Texture Bed or new Site Model "ThickBed" feature which offers: • A 3d solid/volume derived from all or portion of a site model surface • Concentric top and bottom surfaces (similar to a Shell object) • User defined thickness and/or components with thickness (similar to slabs and walls). • OIP or other access for controlling thickness value and direction (up/down) and bottom z. • Classable and Layerable. • Controls for attributes, perhaps similar to wall and slab components. • more Uses: • Soil stratigraphy, filled trenches and other sub grade features (downward thickness) • Zones of building heights in regional planning (upward thickness) • more Some things to chew on: • Are these ThickBeds site modifiers? or "dumb" volumes? user choice? • Control attributes via Site Model configuration? dedicated dialog? Attributes palette? • Cut/Fill aware? • more There are some process heavy ways to make shell objects from site model surface, but it's a pain. Wish is for easier way to accomplish. -B
  11. Is there a way to prevent the site model from automatically updating? I a site model and a couple snapshots in a file. I accidentally changed the site model class and it took 10 min. to update. Then if i want to change it to show existing only 2d another update and 3d existing only, another update. If I could disable automatic updates I could roll all changes into a single update!

I am really missing the Landmark road planning improvements, so i can plan the roads a little more flexible directly on the site model (1) and so i can define the needed cross-section profile of the road side slopes etc. included. Today the different Site Model modifiers are useless, because the modifiers, which have at least some kind of hardscape profiles, are not really communicating with the Site Model. At the designed/modified site we usually don't have simple one direction slopes, like it could be done by the pad-modifier. Today i am able to work out a proper Site Model only by using simple 3D Polys, which takes to much time and then I can use only the Texture Bed Modifier, which can be usefull only for illustrating my Site, but is useless to have the hole hardscape layering embedded/glued to the Site model. Also really important, that the Paving etc hardscape according to the Site model can give the needed cross-section with the specified hardscape layers (for example: brick 60 mm, setting bed 40 mm, permeable base 150 mm, permeable subbased 200 mm) and that it has BIM support. Today I can export only the Site model without proper hardscapes (material underlayering included). Here is a good example from Revit (awfull background music should be muted): https://youtu.be/tw7_hLQo_H0 So far I understand, is also Revit not a specific road planning software, but still they have the compadibility for planning the roads a little more functional way, not just as a flat cross-section profile based way. This is clear, that i dont wait from vectorworks to have the 100% functionality of road planning software like for example Bentley Microstation has the InRoads software, but a little more functional tools are really missing. We have today 4 VW Landmark licenses, but our clients are more and more asking for a proper Site Model together with the paving etc. We and many other Landscape Architects are more and more in worry in that sense. Dont want to leave VectorWorks. Hoping for improvements in next Landmark tools.
  13. I am trying to show the visual effects of a proposed carpark and visitor facility. I have imported a textured .obj survey file in the form of a mesh (see attached file) and I need to insert the site model for the new carpark into this while keeping the terrain and textures of the surrounding area intact. I find when I try to edit/cut a hole in the mesh to create a space for the new carpark, the texture disappears. Is there a way to 'bake' the texture onto the 3d polygons within the mesh? or can the mesh be converted into another form that allows me to do this? Thanks, Steve
  14. At present the Cut and Fill 3D Display option for site models shows areas of cut & fill relative to the zero plane only. See below screenshots of a basic site model with 3D Display set to Proposed Only > 3D mesh, and the same site model with 3D Display set to Cut and Fill (one view from the same angle, and a flatter view to show more clearly what's happening). With 3D Display set to Cut and Fill, the un-modified terrain surface is flattened and cut & fill volume are shown as projections below & above it, while the site modifiers (and any other 3D objects in the scene) are left floating above it at their true heights I realize that this is intentional, as a tool for visualizing the volume of cut & fill. However, I don't find very helpful for visualizing where areas of cut & fill are located in relation to the topography, and other proposed features eg. buildings, roads, trees etc. I'm aware of the 2D Cut Fill Area function located in Site Model Settings > Graphic Properties > Site Analysis, but I think it would also be very useful to have the option of displaying areas of cut & fill in context on the surface of the proposed 3D terrain, see example below. As far as I can tell this display option is not currently an option anywhere in Site Model Settings. I created the below image manually by duplicating the site model, activating 2D Cut Fill Area, converting the site model to a group in Top/Plan view, extracting the red & blue polygons, and converting them to texture bed site modifiers. Currently this process would need to be repeated each time the site model is modified. If this functionality was to be added to to the Vectorworks Site Model, I'd suggest that the Style: selection box (which is currently grayed out when Cut and Fill is selected above), includes two options such as 'Relative' or 'Volume' mode (volume displayed relative to 0), and 'Area' mode (area displayed on terrain surface). At present texture beds and textures applied to the site model are not shown when 3D Display is set to Cut and Fill. The site model reverts to the 3D Triangles colour specified in Site Model Settings, and it could remain this way with the addition of the Area mode described above. If it was also possible to add an option to display cut & fill over the top of textures and texture beds it would be extra useful, preferably with an opacity slider for revealing the texture beds beneath.
  15. Persistent problem here...sometimes when I create a section viewport from a site model the section component (of the site model) will be 'filled'. Other time it wont be. For no apparent reason! I can't for the life of me figure out what the problem is. Is this a known problem? It changes randomly and without warning. Typically I use: Advanced Section Properties - Attributes - Separate Cross Sections [Attribute Class - Section Style]. You can see in the attached screen grab the South Elevation does not have a fill below. The settings on each of the viewports are identical. The 3D display settings for the model is '3D mesh solid'. As I've invested a lot of time building an accurate site model and assistance will be appreciated.
  16. Hi all, I am having an issue with my site model. It is a simple model with only 7 3D polygons that have been used to create site model contours. Unfortunately, the model is skipping some of the contours and drawing straight lines instead (see image attached). The red lines are the 3D polys I have used, and the dashed green is the models interpretation. Is this simply the inherent VW 2019 model creation process doing this due to a lack of data, or is it a setting / something I can rectify? Any ideas would be great! Thanks Joe
  17. It it currently not possible to have a site model modifier that does a form like the images I attach. I have tried doing this with a 3D Polygon placed under the DTM-Modifier class but the site model reads 3D polygons as contour lines. The pad with slope doesn't provide the form I want to create either. I have also tried creating a 3D Polygon, converting it to Nurbs then via the 3D power pack>Create Surfaces from Curves, then Create Interpolated Surfaces, and then placing that in the DTM-Modifier class but then the site model converts that into a mesh with little information that does not contain the form that I want. So the best way to create this strange shaped would be with the subdivision surface. I hope one day one can use this object as a site modifier. Or it could also be created via an interpolated surface but then the site model should respect all vertices and not read the interpolated surface as quite a basic mesh when the interpolated surface is in the DTM-Modifier class. Maybe I'm totally wrong and doing this type of form in a terrain is possible, if so, I would be very glad if someone tells me how can this be done. This type of form occurs many times in the real world, for example you have a ramp that's connected to a street with an incline and to a garage that it's entry level is straight...
  18. Hi, I struggling to understand the best way to place my site model with respect real world elevation (feet above sea level). If my base elevation for the project is 150.0', I am currently setting Story 1, Level: "Finish Floor" to 150'. Is this even right? It feels a little weird to have the whole project floating so high up above the XY plane. Should Story 1 start at 0", and the design layer start at 150'? I then wonder if I should also relate my site model's design layer with respect to Story 1. Currently, I'm placing my site model on a design layer that is not attached to any story, and set to a 0" elevation. The Site model topography is drawn at its real world values, so the whole model floats up above along with all the story related building assemblies. Anyway, I would really love some feedback on what the best practice is for all this. Thanks! Matt
  19. I've successfully imported polyline contours from AutoCAD and created a Digital Terrain Model. However, where the contours run off the boundary of my project, Vectorworks is closing them with the nearest contour of the same elevation. This creates a vertical "wall" of terrain/contours at the edge of my site that I don't want. (see photo). I assume it does this because Vectorworks places 3D Loci on top of the polylines and uses the loci, not the polylines, to generate the model. Is there some way to avoid this, or some way to correct it? I tried to "Edit Site Model" and then slice out the connecting portion of the contour, but it seems to revert when I exit the Site Model editor. What am I missing?
  20. Hey there, is there a workaround to extract the texture pads on a site model for further use? I cloud imagine to generate solids via marionette from the 3D polygons (for BIM use). I know it is possible to have a 3D hardscape, but with serious drainage planning i can't get what i want. Cheers...
  21. At the Landmark 2019 Stake Elevation Z values are in error (always 0 values). In earlier version the problem could be usually solved, if I changed the stake Mode from "Include as site model data" to "Set elevation to Site Model", but now it won't work. Also the existing Stakes from earlier version, which now should be updated, do not update.
  22. Hello all, I have been working a site model for a quarry. I have two sets of survey data, a topographical survey taken in 2017 in PDF form, and a topo survey from 2018 of the same site in DWG form. I turned the DWG into a site model, and have added in site modifiers of the 2017 data by adding stake points and contours, so that I can compare the two surveys to see how the quarry has changed. I have encountered an issue with a particular contour in the site modifiers, and this contour has flagged up 424 modifier conflicts. I cannot get my head around why only this contour has the problems, and upon clicking the warning triangle it states 'Pads Intersect', however, I have not used any pads, only contours and stake points. Does anybody have any suggestions as to why this is happening? As you can see from the zoomed in images, the modifier conflict warnings are not actually sat on top of 'crossovers' and you can see from other contours that these are not problems. I have attached pictures to help, with the zoomed out image showing only the proposed contours, and the zoomed in showing both (green and blue) proposed and existing. Thanks Joe
  23. I've been doing a lot more work with Site Models and have come across a couple of situations that would make for a much better experience. Could we have the proposed contours stop at the site modifier defining the limit of grading. This would be more like how it's done traditionally and would read a heck of a lot better. Can we have a tool that would add contour labels where you direct it to by drawing a line across the model with control over middle or top of contours? The current labels seem to generate based on number of vertices and end up in the worst spots. Looking forward to seeing the continued maturation of the software!
  24. Hello there, Very urgently need some help! Im working with vectroworks 2017 and my site model keeps getting large chunks taken out of it (i.e. the contours are automatically depressing) and I have no idea why. Please see attached images as to what I am talking about. Is there any way to rectify this? I have a presentation in two days and this is not something I have done via a site modifier? I can't seem to edit the proposed contours either, or it doesn't seem to be an option for vectrowork 2017?? Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.
  25. Hi all, I have a query concerning site model contours. I am trying to edit my proposed contours in VW 1017 but when I go to right click, the options to edit does not show up...and I have no way of directly editing them. Has anybody else had this problem? Any advice would be really helpful, thank you.
