  1. Hello everyone, I'm just trying to set a cup of wall/roof details. I have 2 questions 1) between roof and wall components VW allows us to set the connection between a specified roof component and a part of a wall. But sometimes I need to set a roof component between a specified wall component not detectable with the wall style components options. In fact, if I have more than 3 wall components (internal, main component, external) I can't select a specific option. 2) if I need to decide the visualization order of component inside a wall or a roof, how can I do this? Thank you and a good work Z Componenti_tetto.vwx
  2. #1 - The current workflow for editing the Roof Edge Shape of a massing model roof (switching between eave/gable/dutch hip) involves ticking Use Custom Roof from Profile in the OIP, and then selecting Edit Massing Model from the Modify menu, and entering an isolated editing view where the building itself isn't visible. This workflow would be greatly improved if the Roof Edge Shape could be directly edited on the massing model, with the context (ie. building walls) remaining visible, and without having to navigate a separate menu. #2 - A custom roof on a massing model currently remains floating at the height specified when the massing model was first created, and needs to be manually raised / lowered to match any changes in the massing model height. This occurs even if the massing model height is adjusted prior to ticking the Use Custom Roof from Profile box for the first time in the OIP. To improve workflow efficiency the height of a custom roof should be automatically controlled by the height parameter of the massing model it is attached to. If suggestion #1 above was implemented, this problem would also be resolved. #3 - The height parameter in the massing model object currently relates to the height of the walls only. The total height of the building (including the roof) cannot be directly specified, nor is it displayed in the OIP as an automatically generated field. Total building height is unknown, and for any given Height value, it varies depending on Roof Thickness, Roof Slope, & custom roof configuration (see #1 above). In urban design situations, both Architects and Landscape Architects frequently need to work to maximum building heights determined by councils, consent rulings etc. At present, to confirm the total height of a massing model (including the roof) one must switch to front view, manually measure the height of the massing model, and make incremental adjustments to Height, Roof Thickness and Roof Slope to achieve the target building height. My suggestions to remedy the above, and make the Massing Model Object useful for Urban Design applications, would be as follows: 1) At the very least, OIP to display the following information: ‘Floor Height’, ‘Roof Height’ and ‘Total Building Height’, so that manual adjustments to building height can be made far more efficiently than at present, by referring to the OIP. 2) Ideally, add the ability to control the Massing Model geometry with the following parameter combinations: a. Floor Height & Roof Pitch (total height determined automatically) – available at present, but total height not displayed in IOP b. Total Height & Roof Pitch (floor height determined automatically) c. Total Height & Floor Height (roof pitch determined automatically) *Roof thickness remains independent and influences the automatically generated fields, as it presently does in scenario a.
  3. Hi All, Still struggling to get going. Does anybody have an Idea why my roof is being inserted 10' or so below my roof layer. I think I finally have Story's is set up properly but my roof is way below where is should be (although the rectangle object that I created the roof from is at the right hieght). I change the layer of the roof object and it moves up or down according to the layer. Also Is it normal that my empty template is 25mb? Seem huge compared to VW12 where my completed projects never got that high. Does anybody have a template for a 2 storey building or a completed project so that I can see how things are set up. The Vectorworks templates don't seem to function properly. Top of Structurel heights are not set, saved views are set to slab layer, classes are not set up(Glass are not see through) and the file size is huge. Thanks again for the help everybody! John T
  4. I've attached a file that i'm using to learn worksheets. I'd like to add up the cells that contain the thickness of the roof component and show the total thickness in a separate cell. I've tried using the SUM function as suggested by JimW in another post but i'm doing something wrong. Any help is greatly appreciated. Worksheets.vwx
  5. I need help with my Created roof from the walls. I do not know why the roof is residing several units above the wall. There is nothing that I tried to relocated the position. Here is a link to the VW file https://www.dropbox.com/s/ro2ke5nzk1dqqh0/Hacienda_Delfines.vwx?dl=0
  6. The more I build BIMish models in Vectorworks the more I find I'm having to recreate slab styles as roof styles and vis versa (sloping ceiling, ramps in slabs,...).Either of those as a wall style is also useful for generating details and the wall tool being the best for laying out lines of shell detail. The problem being I end up with two even three resources to then describe what is effectively intended to be the same system. It would be good if the three separate shell styles could cross-over between all the shell tools.
  7. I'm closely following the instructions (Help and Video) for inserting a dormer into a roof object ... but no luck. Window is a 3D only symbol. Roof Obj and Symbol have Class = Roof-Main, and same Design Layer. Layer and Class Options set to Show Others. The Roof Obj never recognizes the Window Symbol. I've created dormers in the past without issues, but my current version VW17 seems to not work. I'm using Roof Styles, with multiple components, for the first time. I'm guessing this might be an issue. Any ideas what I may be doing incorrectly?
  8. I have simple gable roofs that intersect, both at slightly different elevations. I'm using roof styles (first time), with decking and metal roofing components extending a few inches beyond the core roof object. When I go to trim for the intersections of the roofs, I'm having no luck using either the Clip Tool (basic) or the Clip Surface Command. Layer and class options are both set to S/S/MO. I'm using a 2D 'roof-trim-template' set on the screen plan, accurately made from a viewport with hidden line rendering. When I attempt to cut, I'm in Top/Plan. My trim-template is moved to the front, the roof object to be cut is moved to the back. 1) Clip Tool on Roof object: I select the roof, then select the Clip Tool, exclusion mode, polygon mode, and then use my trim-template as a guide. After the cut, the section of the roof with the cut, looses all of the styling settings and extensions, and is unusable. 2) Clip Tool of Roof Face object: If I ungroup the Roof object into Roof Faces, the Clip Tool 'kind of works', but is unusable; the roof style stays, but unfortunately the decking and metal components in my style now extend everywhere ... in the cutout area (unwanted) and now also at the ridge (unexceptable), with no ability to fix or edit. 3) Clip Surface Command on Roof object: I select both the Roof object and my trim-template, the command is selectable (in black), but does nothing. According to Help, this is suppose to work. 4) Clip Surface Command of Roof Face object: After the cut, the Roof Face looses all of its styling, and is unusable. Before roof styles, I used the AEC Create Roof command to build the structural component of the roof, then used separate objects on top of the roof to get the overhanging layers I needed. It seems that Roof Styles have almost no ability to adjust, like Wall Styles. Any suggestions, before I revert back to using separate objects to handle roof component overhangs. Best
  9. Weird bug VW 2017 SP2, Once I clip the roof object(styled or unstyled) it converts into a generic objects, it was not happening in VW 2016, only solution I came up is Ungrouping the object first (which I lose control of several adjustments), then clipping it out. Any suggestions or experiencing same problem?
  10. OK, so I have designed a curved eyebrow dormer for a Craftsman house. Question: How do I intersect the extruded objects I've built from the roof face it intersects? Image attached.
  11. Hi, I've not posted before but have seen how helpful some members are, so I'm hoping someone can shed some light on my problem. I have a pitched roof, created from AEC, Create Roof. I have then added a second component within the roof settings called, external 150thick, and internal 250thick. The roof is associated to four walls below it. The internal face of those walls trims the Internal component. I have then created symbols for rooflights and dormers, added these to the roof. A couple of things then seems to go wrong: The roof is triangulated in hidden line and some Opengl views. The internal component doesn't display on the half of the roof with the rooflights. Only the first dormer added cuts a hole in the roof, the others simply appear to sit on the roof, not creating cut outs. If anyone has come across this before and found a solution, I'd love to hear. Thanks, Seán
  12. Hi, I'm designing a building which is based on a simple barn extrusion, however this is complicated through the building fanning out in plan and an angled pitch of the roof. Please see attached screen shots. I believe the change in angle and height of pitch is creating a very small hyperbolic paraboloid roof structure (if very small). I would like to model this roof which allows for a fairly easy change as the project evolves (still in early feasibility stage). I am fairly new to modelling in 3D in Vectorworks (used to 2D) and would very thankful in any help in modelling this roof. Many thanks, Christina
  13. After latest SP of VW2016 my roof now displays multiple planes that do not exist. This happens in hidden line, open Gl or any other view other than top plan, and thus I must ungroup the roof in order to display the roof correctly. I have never had this issue before. what is needed to resolve this issue as its costing me time in completing my work. Attached screen shot shows roof in top plan view ® and same roof Hidden Line (L)
  14. Are there any tricks for trimming walls to roofs, where there are more than one object on the roof layer. For example I have a roof that I want wanting to extend my walls to. However there are also old roof objects which are classed as removed. There are also beams etc that get in the way. I had hoped that by turning these other classes off that the walls would trim to the visible roof. I know I can create new layers and then move the roof there, trim and then move back. Seems like a roundabout way to achieve something simple.
  15. Is there a way to turn a roof object with a few components into a roof style that can then be applied to other roofs? Yes, yes dumb mistake on my part not making the style first, still seems like there should be an obvious way to do this but its very well hidden.
  16. I have just watched a VW youtube video on how to create a skylight. The beginning of the video says you can create a skylight in a roof object or roof face. The instructions after this only show the roof object and not roof face thou, so there are certain steps which I am unable to follow. I have used a windoor to create a fixed glass window. Created a 3D symbol (not 2D/3D as instructed). Now the video shows insertion options for the roof which don't exist in the roof face tool. Where do I go from here? Have tried to drag and drop and a few other settings but not having any luck.
  17. Hello all, I am currently working on a house and have come across a problem that I can't solve. I am looking to create a sloped roof that sits flush to the story below. I Have managed to create the slope however the problem is the corners of the roof stick out and are not flush (pictures 1 & 2 below). I am aiming to achieve a result like this (illustrations 3 & 4 below). I achieved the result I have at the moment by; - lofting between 2 poly lines - create a cut-out of the roof - subtracting solids Any help would be much appreciated Regards, Felix
