  1. Hi guys, I am trying to render in 3D using open GL but it seems I can only use the solid colour in the attribute palette but unable to choose an image. It does seem to upload when i choose one from the library in the resource manager. My layer option is set to show/snap/modify others and I use only one design layer so surely I must do something wrong? I can render the wall in solid colours but as you see the bricks don't show if I choose the image - Same for the roof! Can someone advise? I am sure it must be something simple which I have not figured out. Thank you
  2. I am looking for someone who can help me take a Vectorworks Architect small residential model and create realistic interior and exterior renderings. These renderings would be used in an advertising campaign for my firm. This would be a project for an independent contractor.
  3. The only way to preview grass is to click edit on the texture if you want to see it on a plane? Seems to me it would be very useful to see texture previews on whatever object type you want in the RM (as the editor does): Plane, Sphere, Cube, Flat. Can this be done / am I missing something?
  4. Is the Vectorworks University rendering course completely broken? The downloadable example file is in 2020 format, but the accompanying video appears to be referring to tools and operations that I find completely different in VW2020? For example, I have got as far as the rendering viewports example on a sheet layer. The tutor is asking me to select 'high quality render' in the 'resource browser' palette. Isn't the 'resource browser' now the 'resource manager', and if so, the 'high quality render' option is not one of the resources I can find. I note from the tutor's screen that he is using VW Designer 2016 - a software version that is now 4 years out of date. Isn't this module completely obsolete now? If it is, where can I find some up-to-date resources about this topic?
  5. Am I correct in assuming that every time you update a viewport with a sketch style, it changes the sketch even if the model hasn't changed? Also wondering about how to apply a sketch style (with hidden line) to apply to surface hatches? Hidden Line: Sketch Hidden Line Results (Before Clicking "Update"😞 After Pressing Update (notice results are different and that it doesn't apply to surface hatch?): Pressing Update a fourth time (just for fun):
  6. Hi all. This viewport is rendered background=unshaded polygon. Has anyone experienced the unwanted diagonal lines, indicated in green, attched? Seem to be associated with a re-shaped wall....any comments welcome. Rendering in opengl solves the problem. (I used unshaded polygon because it renders two extrudes semi-transparent, the ones showing existing gables of this extended house.) 200511 GA Tech 1.pdf
  7. I've noticed that VW2020 sometimes hangs up when switching render modes, and the expected results are inconsistent. Sometimes, I get the spinning Mac OS ball (VW is unresponsive / hung up), and there's a long delay before the tea kettle displays and then begins to show progress. Since it works this way, it's hard to tell if VW is hanging up (freezing) or just taking its sweet time. I have a decent CPU/GPU and plenty of RAM. Finding these inconsistencies make the tutorial process really difficult because it's hard to know if you're doing something wrong or the program is behaving badly. At the end of this trial and error process, I took Jim's render styles and followed the same debug example below with a very simple file (4x4x4 cube on a small slab and a single light). Everything behaved as expected. So either VW has issues with rendering bigger, complex files, or Jim's tutorial file is bugged somehow. For file consistency and to make sure I'm testing the same situation, I am using an exercise file from the "Rendering in Vectorworks" tutorial, filename "02-renderworks-camera-effects-v01.vwx". The Renderworks styles I refer to (I.e., "Quick" and "High Quality Render" are styles that Jim is using in the tutorial). I am going through the Renderworks modes in Design Layers (not sheet layer viewports). For Fast Renderworks, this doesn't seem to be an issue, but for Final Renderworks, Artistic Renderworks, Hidden Line, Dashed Hidden Line or any of the Polygon settings, there is an issue for render progress and render behavior. If I select "Fast" and then switch to "Final", the tea kettle displays for a moment and then nothing changes. Similarly, if I go from "Artistic" to "Fast" or "Final" nothing changes. If I go from Fast --> High Quality --> Final it works as expected, even if I interrupt High Quality and force a switch to Final. If I work this way, the Final render only takes 30 seconds. Switching to or from hidden line always seems to hang up VW. Other modes hang up based on what mode is currently active. Debug Example: I'm in Open GL and I switch to Renderworks Style --> Quick Render - it works as expected, immediate tea kettle and it takes 43 seconds. Correct! I'm in Quick Render and I switch to Hidden Line - it hangs up for a couple minutes and the render doesn't tell me how long it took. But crazy that it takes longer than Quick Render. Doesn't display "Rendering Complete" text. I'm in Hidden Line and I switch to Renderworks Style --> Quick Render - it hangs up for a couple of minutes and then the render says that it takes 44 seconds. Hmm. I'm in Quick Render and I switch to Fast - it works as expected, immediate tea kettle and it takes 04 seconds I'm in Fast and I switch to Final - it just stays in "Fast" even though "Final" is selected I'm in Final (but it's displaying as Fast) and I switch to Renderworks Style --> Quick Preview - it works as expected, immediate tea kettle and it takes 51 seconds. I'm in Quick and I switch to Final - it works as expected and it takes 45 seconds. Correct! It seems that depending on the file I'm working in, the Final setting has different behaviors and different results. An update tutorial to how the different modes function in VW2020 would be extremely useful. For now, I'm going to use my really really basic file and try to go through Jim's tutorials that way. I sort of expect that there would be some kind of render cache somewhere that needs occasional cleaning for optimization purposes. Could that be it? Or am I fundamentally misunderstanding how rendering works in VW? QA issue? I don't know. It's great that there's a time / progress bar as well, but like the hang up issue, whether or not it functions as expected is inconsistent. Would be great if it showed "Time Remaining" as well...
  8. Hi there, I needed to export a A0 papersize drawing with rendering fast. So I turned to Cloud Services. But I got a major error on the exported file. I think this has something to do with the difference how lighting symbol rotation is handled between vwx19 and vwx20. This rearranged all my Label Legends. So a lot is unreadable or confusing now. But when I render the same viewport on my computer it gives the correct output. Having read some of the other articles about the 2d/3d label legend differences between vwx19 and vwx20. I came to the conclusion that this may be related. Below are 2 examples. A screen capture of the output from cloud render A screen capture of the output from my laptop. I understand that you want people to switch as fast as possible so you don't have to service multiple platforms but this is just anoying. @klinzey @BSeigel can you guys shed some light on this?
  9. It's been years since I did this... but my ellips shutter cuts aren't rendering to match the wireframe beams. The cuts show, but nowhere near where they should. I've since adjusted them in rendering mode, but how does this @%^$%^ happen?
  10. Hi, really struggling with this. We are now working in 3D - fantastic!-, but the big issue is that once everything has been extruded etc, the 2D looks very different from what we are used to....bringing me to redraw 2D plans AFTER the 3D has been generated just for presentation purposes. A BIG pain and loss of time which I am sure can be avoided but cannot work out how. Have experimented with different renders etc but there must be a function/box/option that I am missing. Can anyone rescue me please? 2D plan BEFORE 3D 3D view (Open GL) 2D top/plan view AFTER 3D 2D top view (open GL) after 3D
  11. Hi On several occasions, and in different projects/files I experienced that the rendered model is not aligned with the physical model. It happens both when rendering in a viewport and directly on the layer. It happens in all versions I have worked with since v. 14 (with renderworks) through to 2020. In the attachment the blue line connects the same house... Am I the only one with this issue? Cheers Andreas

  13. Hello, I am evaluating Lumion (which now has this great livesync) and Cinema 4D so to get amazing renderings and maybe walk-troughs. From the 2 latest Demo versions I have these issues and wanted to hear your opinion about them. Lumion demo: Almost always the imported VW model is way far off somewhere in the horizon. I understand, modifying the origin in VW will help but it seems finicky. I already have every texture assigned in VW, but when I select a wall with a particular texture so to replace it with a Lumion one, it only selects that wall, not the other walls with the same texture (or color). Is this how it is supposed to be? I recall trying this with the old Bryce 3D and it would select all the elements which came from same color or texture. Also, have almost no nice textures to choose from and test (but this is due to the Demo version). Moving around (I know, you can use the W A S D etc keys plus shift) seems not very smooth and natural. Can't you just pan and zoom and rotate with the ease of VW? Or is just me not knowing the software yet? Cinema4D demo: It is beautifully integrated with VW and the imported model comes right away at the center of the window (as it should...) and with the same textures already assigned in VW and maybe lights. But the rendered image (without any in depth setting changes because I am too new to really understand the multitude of options) seems identical to the Renderworks one more or less. Would knowledge of C4D make for much more realistic renderings than Renderworks, or because they share the ray trace engine, you will only get better libraries, better mapping options and natural elements but the overall photo-realism of the rendering is similar and less convincing than Lumion (or Vray, but that's not an option yet I understand)? Thanks for any advice
  14. Hello everyone. My curtain wall rendered in opengl shows horizontal frames in greyed line wire frame. So not filled. I'd like to see all frames filled. Glass panels and vertical frames are rendered filled as anticipated from class fill settings. All frame types are set identically in the wall edit dialogue. This rendering issue applies to horizontal frames on horizontal grid lines and the top boundary and the bottom boundary frames.....But when I render in unshaded polygon, then the whole curtain wall renders perfectly. I must have missed a setting? Any similar experience?
  15. I am considering upgrading to the AMD Threadripper 2990WX CPU, does anyone have any experience with it? Looking to cut my rendering time down, would you recommend it or another processor? Thanks!
  16. Hi, Newbie here - I have been rendering my work for the last 13 hrs - suddenly I cant see the timer in the corner, and although it hasn't restarted, it doesn't seem to be making progress either.... is there a way to restart this if it has stopped? Argh!! Thanks,
  17. Jumping from VW 2016 to 2019. All very simple geometry no longer renders under 'final shaded polygon.' I even took the 2019 file shown in the screen shot, saved as a 2016 file to test. File rendered perfectly (and fast) in 2016. Not sure if there are some settings that didn't carry over, or if I'm doing something wrong? Any help someone can offer would be very much welcome, thanks!!
  18. Two identical renders, one in 2018 - perfect, one in 2010 (SP1), whole new black background - just one of countless errors. In 10 years it's the most shabby release to date, numerous crashes, chronic rendering issues (actually slower than 2018). When can we expect a SP2 that make sit useable? I've manually cut logos out for Copyright & blurred images.
  19. Hi, I have become enamored with the output from Lumion that I have seen working as an exhibit designer. I have been rendering using Renderworks for 8 years and have overall been happy with the results. Where I get frustrated is when I start to add realism such as glows, lighting, reflection, bump. I certainly expect the rendering time to increase, but I've had renderings take 20 + hours. I am tweaking certain settings to speed things along, but timing seems to be an issue. From what I've understood from forums and word of mouth, Lumion is a great, intuitive rendering solution that tends to put out fairly quick renderings that are equal to greater in quality than renderworks. I am sure mouch of this comes down to program aptitude, but it led me to investigate further. I didn't make it far before I learned Lumion is ONLY PC based. Our office is 100% mac and not going anywhere else anytime soon. Has anybody figured out ways to render images that have a certain watercolor effect similar to Lumion's Color Sketch style? Additionally, has anybody found another program similar to Lumion that is operable on Macs? Thanks, Gregg
  20. Hello, I'm having a seemingly funky rendering issue across multiple files. I'm running VW Spotlight 2018 SP4 and am unable to render in Final Renderworks or as Custom Renderworks. Its as if the operation never starts and all my objects, symbols, etc. become transparent (as in they become invisable). Everything is still selectable and appears with an orange outline when selected. Also of note is that when I zoom in and out with the mouse, I am able to briefly see all objects crudely rendered. However, the moment I release the mouse when zooming to lock in a view, all objects revert to their incognito modes and disappear once again. Open GL rendering seems to work just fine. File uploaded below I cant find anything else about this problem on the forums, so I know I'm missing something. Or perhaps I'm just a victim of not enough GPU for VW? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Specs: MacBook Pro 10.13.6 (13-inch, 2016) 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 Intel Iris Graphics 550 1536 MB Running VW2018 Spotlight Chandelierv1.vwx
  21. I've been having this problem from time to time for the past few months. When rendering in Open GL i get distorted surfaces like the screen shot below. Sometimes i can close VWs or go to a Top plan 2d view an then return and it goes away, other times it doesn't. If i create a viewport on a sheet layer with the distortions, close VWs, open it and view the model in a design layer, the distortions disappear but if i go to the viewport created before i closed VWs, they are still there, just not in the design layer. It's sporadic. Anyone have an idea what might be causing this?
  22. Here's an oddity I'm running across. I have a file I'm working on for some client renders, there is a mix of spotlight fixtures and regular visualisation light objects. If I cut a section out from the drawing, in this case a front stage view, using the clip cube it technically works, but in rendering it will not visualise the spotlight fixtures, their lights aren't rendered. It's not a huge deal, I'm just missing a couple of gobo breakups on the furniture and my front wash. My workaround has been to just use Vis Light objects for the stage wash, but is this normal behaviour? I haven't tested this yet in a fresh blank file to see if it's something file specific. I normally don't bother with section cuts but decided to do one this time around and then ran in to this little annoyance. Thoughts?
  23. Many times you let a render run in the background only to find an error (human mostly) that means some part of the scene hasn't worked properly. A texture hasn't taken the the way you thought it would, it's scales all out or to reflective. So you fix then re-render the viewport. The change you have made is a long way from where the viewport starts the rendering so it's going to be a while be before you see the result. It would be great if there was a way to direct the renders attention to the most relevant parts of the image first. Then just let it go on it's marry way. Say by hovering the cursor over the target location or setting hot spots by pressing a key over those locations.
  24. A problem with my viewports occurs more and more often, which is that at some point all viewports on all sheet layers in various of my project VW files disintegrate. All viewports had already been previously rendered. This results in all viewports now showing up in Wireframe = none-rendered, whilst still keeping their settings. How st this even possible?
  25. Why is it that Hardscapes do not allow for alignment of Render Textures in similar ways to other solid objects (i.e. extrudes and floors). The entire Render Tab disappears when using Hardscape Objects. This is not good and should be fixed ASAP.
