  1. Thanks to VW Cloud Services cloud rendering, I'm getting reacquainted with Renderworks. Also, how is cloud rendering not the headline screaming from the mountain tops right now? I feel like I have a Threadripper with a 3080 next to my 6-year old MBP that's quietly letting me edit the model while multiple renders are being processed in the background (multitasking heaven). I've watched the VW tutorials, and referenced @Andy Broomell's excellent guide to texture creation (that fills in all the undocumented explanations and techniques) but I'm having a bit of a design paradox... Client is converting an old venue into a black box. We're doing demo work, exposing brick walls, removing walls, keeping the art deco drop ceiling soffit feature... so I'm helping them visualize that transformation but I'm running into some design decision challenges: True black textures seem to create a light-sucking void into a fourth dimension, so I've stopped them all at 1% (versus 0%) Brick textures are bumped, parrallaxed, and displacement mapped but I'm not really seeing it because of the LX choices I've made Color Force IES files were not visible at all as custom light sources I tried a couple S4's but the file started freaking out, so I wanted to keep it simple for this round by using Light Source objects Maybe I should reconsider that choice for Renderworks vs OpenGL? Point lights in OpenGL worked great but they're kinda boring in a final render Spot lights in OpenGL had amazing punch (and a chromatic vibrance) but cannot show bump or displacement mapping (plus limited to 8 lights) Lit fog is usually my friend but it just mutes everything here, and hides the ceiling soffit The more light bounces around the room, the greyer the room gets (makes sense) Reflection is 0-3% on most textures Blur is in the 5-10% range Trying to find a balance of light scraping the bumped / displaced brick but the beam / field angles have a soft edge At one point, I added "neon tube" tucked in the soffit (extrude along path with a glow texture) but I felt like that was faking it too much Maybe that's something I should continue exploring? Once we have a show in there, the black box will fade into the background as it should, so this is a strange challenge. I could add the existing work lights for accuracy, which I will in the next round but I doubt that will look very sexy. I guess what I expected was hoping for was more of a glossy black look than a neutral grey... When I had reflections turned up, it was still grey but mirrored on the floor, walls and ceiling. Maybe the solution is repositioning the lights closer to the walls, so they'll scrape the bricks (instead of washing them out at 45º tilt) because the trade-off of the beam spilling onto the floor is worth it... I'll say it's "dramatic" instead of unintentional. And use a plastic reflection on the painted black brick wall texture (similar to the one that I created for the truss). Hi, When accessing a panorama tour via Vectorworks Cloud Services on a browser, switching to the cardboard view (via the cardboard icon on the lower part of the screen) gives a 90° counterclockwise frozen rotated image. I tried both in Safari e Google Chrome and on different devices with no success. Via Nomad app direct opening a panorama file works smoothly as expected. Should I submit this as a bug? Thanks.
  3. Hi, I am new to the 360 panorama view within vectorworks but I have been experimenting with the tool over the past week and am trying to export a view to send to a client. I've included 2 screenshots of Panorama's I've managed to export the first (Export1) worked well in final quality but i'd missed a few things so made some adjustments in the model and exported the panorama again, now when I export in Final quality I get a final render as shown in the Export2' - a lot worse quality with dark areas. I've tried going back to the original file before I made any changes and exporting again but no matter what I do now my render will not export a high quality image. I'm very confused as I have not amended the lighting at all since the first export and nothing I do seems to be able to achieve these results again. I would be grateful for any advice as to why this is happening. Thanks,
  4. I am trying to place an outdoor panoramic background image around a model I am trying to render from 8 different camera angles. For the background I have made an image prop using an extruded arc that has been converted into a nurbs. On this I have placed a texture of the panoramic image, the sky has a transparency mask so I can use the HDRI sky in renderworks. The problem I am having is trying to get the image to scale and map to where I want it on the nurbs. for some reason the image crops out and repeats in random vertical sections and does not wrap continuously around the surface, I have tried using a decal but this has proved too difficult. I have tried turning off horizontal and vertical tiling and this doesn't work either. I'm sure there has to be a way to get this to work, any ideas much appreciated.
  5. I am exporting a 360 Panorama to a local folder on my machine but when I double click the .Index file all I get is a whited screen in Safari. Obviously won't work in chrome. any Ideas?

On November 16, global design and BIM software developer Vectorworks, Inc.’s Cloud Services was named winner of the Cloud Based Technology of the Year 2017 award for the Construction Computing Awards. Vectorworks Architect software was also named runner up for the Architectural Design Software of 2017 award. “Leveraging the power of cloud computing is a huge productivity improvement, saving hundreds of hours a year,” said Lyuben Hadzhipopov, cloud infrastructure manager at Vectorworks. “Before the Cloud, computational-intensive tasks like photo-realistic rendering could take hours and sometimes even days. By subbing these tasks to the Cloud, the web can handle processing, leaving your local machine free so work and collaboration can continue as planned.” Improved Cloud Services were released in Vectorworks 2018 software this past September, and designers can now easily share designs, drawings and 3D models with clients and partners by using Google Drive, in addition to Dropbox, which was previously available. The Cloud Services web portal has also been updated for better file organization, along with an easier-to-use sharing interface and the ability to generate Web View Virtual Reality links of files in the cloud. Additionally, designers can now render a 360-degree view of a 3D model with the panorama feature, and then export the file to cloud storage, receiving a link to view the rendered panorama on a laptop, desktop or any mobile device. “Looking forward, Vectorworks is investigating new innovations to bring to its Cloud Services, like augmented reality capabilities and other collaborative capabilities, which would give Vectorworks users new ways to interact with stakeholders in the design and construction process," said Hadzhipopov. We use Vectorworks quite heavily in the office for 2D drawing, but are just really starting to get to grips with Landmark / Renderworks, and while I am loving it so far I'm not quite sure of the full extent of it's capabilities. I am looking to do some visualisations for a wind farm planning application, for which the levels of accuracy required by technical guidance for visualisation (published by SNH) is quite precise, and I'm not sure if it's something that can be achieved in Vectorworks or if I need to look at bespoke wind energy software (such as Resoft Windfarm / WindPro etc.) I need to be able to match a wireframe view of OS terrain information (for an area of up to 80km of Terrain50 contour shapefiles or DTM grid) with a panorama photograph, to an exact bearing direction and field of view. The wireframe needs to match the cylindrical projection of the panorama photograph (- i.e. NOT be in standard equirectangular / planar perspective as per a single standard photograph,) and the model will also need to account for the curvature of the earth and atmospheric refraction. My current feeling is this is beyond the realms of Vectorworks capability at present, (much as I would love this not to be the case!!) but I would appreciate the thoughts of users with more experience and expertise!!
