  1. I noticed that Apple upgraded their iPad Pro line today and they are now running on the M1 chip. Does this mean that the new iPad Pro will run Vectorworks? Kevin
  2. Hey there, you might know this article: "Improve OpenGL and Wireframe performance - Windows only - Nvidia graphics only" Is there any chance of an update on those recommended settings? I was testing my files with my M1 MacbookPro and was literally speechless how slow my i7-9750H - Geforce RTX2070 Windows Laptop did in comparison... So maybe the right hardware config could boost the Windows performance? Cheers, Daniel
  3. Hi all I know there are probably already a lot of conversations regarding this but none of them is up-to-date I think. What would be your perfect Workstation configuration. I'm looking at: - AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ PRO 3975WX (32 cores version because the 64 cores is more then double the price and I don't need all the cores) - Nvidia A6000 Any tips, recommendations???
  4. Hi I'm new here! It was nice to read your discussion 😉 I'm wondering if you could help me with my choice for Vectorworks 2020 mobile station. I don't want to spend a fortune but about $1,2-1,5k. What would you recommend: 1. New: Lenovo ThinkPad P52s i7-8550 (4x4.0Ghz) 16GB DDR4 2400MHz 15,6" IPS FHD (touch mat) nVIDIA QUADRO P500 - 2GB SSD - 512GB M.2 PCie NVMe or 2. Refurbished: Dell Precision 5510 Xeon® E3-1505M v5 2,80GHz, (4x3,7GHz) 32GB DDR4 15,6" FHD IPS NVIDIA Quadro M1000M 2 GB GDDR5 SSD 512GB SSD M.2 PCIe NVMe or 3. Refurbished: Dell Precision m6800 i7-4810MQ (4x3,8GHz) 32GB DDR3L 17,3" FHD (1920x1080) NVIDIA Quadro K5100M 8GB GDDR5 SSD - 256GB 2,5" SATA 4. New: Asus ROG STRIX G i7-9750H 8GB DDR4 (later to be updated) 15,6 IPS FHD NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650 4GB SSD 512NVMe GTX FHD W10 Which one should I choose and why? URGENT CASE 🙂
  5. Good afternoon, hope everyone's dealing with the Corona Virus ok. I'm replacing my Dell desktop and getting a new laptop as well, as I live in Jersey (UK), I'd like to buy local for ease of servicing and have been offered a deal on the following specs, any comments gratefully received... VW Landmark 2019 but will be upgrading to 2020 once new system installed. Custom pc i7 8700k, 3.6GHz octo core, 32gb, Nvid Geo RTX 2070, 2TB HDD + 512GB SSD Laptop MSI GL65 15" i7 9750H, 2.6GHz 6 core, 16GB, Nvid Geo RTX 2060 6GB, 1TB HDD + 256 SSD I currently don't do a huge amount of modelling Many thanks, Alasdair
  6. I consider myself to be a software geek, but when it comes to hardware...I am a complete novice. I am in the market for a new laptop and I need recommendations. I have been a Macbook Pro guy for years and am currently squeaking by with my mid-2010 model. Honestly it has been a great machine, but it's time has finally come. My quandry is that the new Macbook Pro's just don't seem to offer as much bang for the buck as the earlier models...especially when compared to the rise of other competitors. Apple doesn't seem to care as much about this line as they once did and I am not very impressed with the current lineup. I feel like I have been waiting for years for "the one" to be released and for Apple to get back on the ball, but I'm not sure if that day has come. That said, I have invested into the Apple ecosystem for years, and I don't know if the sacrifice in power, quality, etc. is completely worth entertaining a new PC. My usage is varied. I would love to support Vectorworks as efficiently as possible, but I also do a lot with the Adobe Suite, video editing, and audio editing. If I go Apple, what are the problems with Vectorworks and the Catalina OS release? Curious if anyone has any recommendations/suggestions? I would love to hear.
  7. Hi folks, It's been a while since I was active on this forum. Happy to be back though. I've been holding out on upgrading for a long long time. Still on the 2012 MBP retina, the very first batch. Now that the 16inch MBP comes with an escape key and possibly a better typing experience, it removes all my red flags in the previous gen models that prevented me from upgrading. So the question is, should we go for the i-9 8 cores processing at a lower individual core speed, or would we benefit more from the i-7 6 cores with a higher individual core speed? I suppose it's more of how Vectorworks utilises these cores. My work mainly revolves around the VWX entertainment module and a fair bit of rendering. I use mainly hidden line renders for 3D. Any thoughts? Gabriel
  8. After many years of working on the aluminum mac keyboard, I am looking at purchasing a new keyboard. My goal is to have more customizable shortcut keys, better tactile response, and a more ergonomic layout. Looking for recommendations Thanks!
  9. I am considering upgrading to the AMD Threadripper 2990WX CPU, does anyone have any experience with it? Looking to cut my rendering time down, would you recommend it or another processor? Thanks!
  10. Have you recently went with a new laptop for VW? If so, please share your experience and if you think it's whiz-bang, meh, or bad. Here's mine: I settled on a Dell G7 15" 16 g 2666 mhz ram gtx 1060 max q gpu 8th gen i7 6 core cpu at first, I was very unhappy. The Nvidia graphics didn't seem to be working on the laptop display at all, only the external. I couldn't get past the scrolling lag on-site, on battery power, just to pull up a dimension. Vectorworks service select came in, connected to my computer, and found that the scaling was different between the laptop screen and the external. once they made those the same, it was a lot better. Dell has very affordable premium 4 year service plans, so I went with that. I've had their techs connect 4 times now, looking for possible causes of the performance issue and tweaking settings. I was shocked to see average cpu and gpu temps around 50c, however they say that's normal. I'm also a bit freaked when the fan turns on for simple web browsing - but once again, that's normal. my old MBP sure didn't huff and puff like that but then again, it doesn't have a gtx 1060. so, I only have a few days to choose whether to return or not. I think I'll keep it, and that it'll last at least a few years. It has not been three times as good, maybe not even twice as good, but it is better performing, albeit never as silky smooth as mac os. 😞 I'd be very interested to hear your recent story; have you been impressed or meh? peace, Tim Olson
  11. Hi folks, I currently split my work flow between my desktop machine (i5-6600, 32GB RAM, GTX 970) and my Macbook Pro Retina 2012 (i7-3820, 16 GB RAM, G650M), but I'd really like to move to a smaller laptop. Everything I've read about Vectorworks hardware requirements suggests that you'd be a fool to attempt Vectorworks with any less than a 1GB video card, but I'm wondering how much of this is due to rendering? I use Spotlight to draw lighting plots and site layouts, and I'll simply never, ever use the Vectorworks rendering engine. Heading into a long summer tour, I'm looking at ultrabooks like the XPS 9370 or the Yoga 920 (both are i7-8550u, 16GB RAM, Intel 620 graphics) and obviously this would be considerably less capable for rendering, but I'm wondering what kind of experience I'd see if I simply never, ever leave wireframe or Plan view? Any advice appreciated. Thanks!
  12. Hi, I am finding that after ~30mins of using Vectorworks 2017 & 2016 the redraw rate and the object info boxes flicker and the program becomes really slow. Changing between tools and moving objects around the screen is laggy to the point where it affects my workflow. Text boxes are almost impossble to work with as i can't select text or move text without waiting a few soconds per operation. I would like to think that i am running powerful enough hardware to not have a problem but clearly something is not right and i can't seem to track it down. I phoned up the Vectorworks support line and they tried to fix the issue but to no avail. The girl was very helpful but basically just changed some of the graphics properties within vectorworks which made no difference. It does not matter how large or small the file is, how complex or how simple the geometry is. I am working only in 2D plan. Sketchup, 3DS Max, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier Pro etc. all work absolutely fine without any issues but AutoCAD suffers the same issue. I am hoping someone else had had the same problem or knows where i can next look for a solution. My specs: AMD FX 8350 CPU (8 cores overclocked to 4.7Ghz) AMD radeon R9 270x 2gb dedicated RAM (this is a dedicated graphics card) 16GB Corsair DDR3 1333mhz ram both programs are running on an SSD (samsung 840 pro) ASUS TUF Sabertooth 990FX R2 motherboard Windows 10 2 screens @ 1080pi each. i would be hugely grateful to anyone who could shed some light on the problem. I am not sure how to track down if its a hardware issue or a software issue. Many thanks 402-102-B-GroundFloorPlan.vwx
  13. I do not like who I am becoming. I have chided Apple fanboys for years about overpaying for hardware because of nice ID...now I am considering doing it in the extreme with the Microsoft Studio. I really love the form factor - but worry that it is underpowered. For sure it is underpowered considering it is 4K - but that aside - is it capable of providing a smooth VW experience? Anybody using one?
  14. Looking at a laptop running with the MX150 mobile gfx card. Has anyone had any experience with it ? I do enough 3D work to worry thanks ethan
  15. Ive got a Logitech LS1 laser mouse which is a standard mouse with a scroll wheel which is clickable. On some machines ive got Vectorworks installed on ive had the mouse scroll wheel setup so i can pan around the drawings in the same way the pan tool works. On my laptop running OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 ive not been able to get this to work, it always brings up OSX's mission control view. Ive recently downloaded the settings programme for my mouse in which it gives me some options to configure various features, but im unsure what i should set the centre scroll button click to do, to enable panning in Vectorworks - Any ideas ? Please see attached screenshot of settings for reference.
  16. We are probably investing in a couple of new computers soon and I'm wondering if the new AMD powerhouse will be a good processor for Vectorworks. We have done some in house tests on render times, and it is pretty clear that multiple cpu cores with as high clock as possible, and ram with high speed and timings have an impact on render time. Will Ryzen be supported? Ryzen have 8 cores and 16 threads, and supports memory up to at least 3200 MHz.
