  1. This is another wish to control faceting, especially in 3d geometry operations. Recent posts and many old ones explore the problem from several user experiences. Extrusion, EAP, NURBS curve, NURBS surface, Shells, etc all exhibit faceting. This seems to stem from some software design interpretation of the curves. Curved geometry is generally understood by humans as an analog concept - a circle or other smooth curve is continuous. It has no vertices or facets. The curve can be defined by math. ANY point on the curve conforms to the math. Extrusion, conversion to NURBS, EAP, etc should adhere to the source curve math without creating additional corners or facets! Digital interpretation of curves, including in vwx, is not continuous. Digital depends on plotting vertices along the analog pathway and connecting the vertices with straight segments. The end points of the segments conform to the math definition, but points between do not. (This is less apparent in 2d curves (arcs, polys), but becomes apparent in conversions and use as sources for 3d objects.) More vertices produces a smoother looking curve and less deviation from the math definition. Computers allow plotting myriad points along the analog curve. I’m guessing software (eg Vectorworks) designers decide how many points/segments, balancing performance against curvature excellence. Here is chart with vwx 2d and 3d conversion resolutions pref set to max. It scales, so larger diameters will yield same vertex count and proportionally longer facets. Wish - Lots more points, perhaps 2d and 3d prefs for sooper dooper stratospheric high conversion res? Or some other way to conform more closely to analog understanding of continuous curves? -B
  2. 1. I wish the path created for an extrude would remain that type of geometry rather than convert the path to a NURB... again 2. I also wish there were more time saving features added to the extrude along path tool I wish the original path geometry to stay the same because... If I wanted a NURB, I would draw a NURB originally. If my extrusion is only going around 2 axis, and I draw a polygon for the path... I would like it to remain in only 2 axis for quicker editing if I need to modify that path as my model progresses.... let the modeler choose their geometry, the program should keep it until its changed. I think there can be some simple but very effective time saving features added to the extrude along path tool, including the following: - During creation, give us the option to pick the origin on next mouse click of the profile. - Let us copy and paste IN PLACE profiles from one extrude along path to another (like it was at one point), don't make us realign the same profile (very time consuming) - Make the extrude the same class as the profile used to create it (saw this in another wish list item recently) - Give us a right click on the extrude along path object to flip the profile - It would be handy if we could lock, or choose a path based on roof object or wall object edge... and when moved it could update.
  3. I'd like to be able to control the position of a profile relative to the path of an EAP, instead of it always being to the centre of the profile. Very few of the EAPs I create are best positioned with the path at the centre of the profile. Perhaps we could have some controls similar to the Wall Tool: 1. Left Control Line Mode 2. Centre Control Line Mode 3. Right Control Line Mode 4. Custom Control Line Mode
  4. Hello: I am attempting to create a curved built-in bookshelf using extrude along path. I created the profile as a 2d polygon and am using a polyline converted to a 3d polygon in order to gain a z parameter, as the path. This is a fairly simple path and profile, yet it takes upwards of 30 minutes to generate, all the while vectorworks is frozen and I get a spinning beach ball. Luckily I am able to use other applications on my computer as normal, but vectorworks is reported as "application not responding" until the process is complete. Once the EAP operation is complete, the file is still very laggy in both 2d and 3d views. In an attempt to make the file less laggy, I converted the EAP object to a group of 3d polygons and simplified them by 1 inch, but this results in very weird texture rendering unlike the EAP solid. This does almost completely eliminate the lag associated with the EAP In the file attached, the path and profile objects are on the Extrude Primitives layer, the extrude test layer contains the completed extrude, and the polygons layer contains the grouped 3d polygons generated from converting the EAP object. EDIT: I know that my hardware specs are not the greatest, but vectorworks runs fine except for this issue as long as I don't try and do crazy OpenGL or renderworks fanciness. EDIT 2: I realized I forgot to upload the file and attach it, and in the process I realized that it is 236Mb. This would potentially explain why it is so laggy, but why would an EAP object, 2 polygons and the extracted group of polygons be over 200Mb. My other file that I was originally trying this in is only around 155Mb and contains loads more geometry and PIOs.
