I have an issue with an external database, which all in all I'm relatively new to. I have successfully gotten lighting devices to automatically update and sync the changes, and mapped the fields well. I have a UUID field that pulls the IDs and places them in a field I can extract, so a unique key field to use as well. My issue right now is that there are 13 lighting devices pulled into the database that are not in the VW file (screenshot attached). If I add a fixture it adds it, if I remove a fixture it removes it, so it's syncing correctly, and I have my options set correctly just going off that. What would cause this, if anyone knows? 🔴 EDIT: Just adding some additional info that probably points to why I'm seeing these additional fixtures without them being in the file. How I have no idea, but maybe someone will see this and their light bulb will brighten up 🙂 First Screenshot: The list of fixtures in the database, after adding in 4x 36 degree S4s and 1x Moving light Second Screenshot: The UUIDs pulled for the fixtures. Notice the ACTUAL UUID strings, and the single character map that somehow got applied to these ghost fixtures as a UUID. I don't know enough about how exactly Vectorworks carries it's data out to external sources, or what process it goes though to create a SQLite file to point towards and map the chosen records to, but something is fishy here. If this looks familiar to anyone, let me know!

Worksheet Database reporting Dimension Object Info
John Meunier posted a topic in General Discussion
Good Day All, I would like to create a worksheet pulling in all the dimensions in a project. The main reason is to see all Leader, Trailer, and notes of both dimensions and chain dimensions. A bonus if we can pull in the dimension style. It appears that the dimension record is hidden to users any one know where to find the values for the headers, if it is even possible? Any help would be great. Small Rant; Why at this stage of VWs do I still struggle using dual dimensions. Who decided that the [ ] should be a default for secondary units? Why can't I change it by default? Why can I not have a check box on a viewport to force dimensions into imperial, metric, or both? Why do some objects have options to be either metric or imperial but not all? For instance the stake object now has the ability to choose units, but the grade object nope no choice only reports primary as per document preferences. errrrr OK rant over. Thanks for reading 🙂 -
I am looking for suggestions on what to use as a database primary key for a lighting device. I cannot figure out how to get the UID to be a field that could be linked to a database. Ideally this field would be something that Vectorworks could autonumber so that I wouldn't have to go and manually number the field each time a device was added.

ODBC and SQlite remote databases is a beautiful feature in VW. In BIM Software in reference to Architectural Drawings and the entire AEC Industry has possibly become more about referencing information than just simply drafting plans etc... This is proprietary or generic information about building products, light fixtures, furniture, etc... Managing all of this information from a single source (VW) is extremely difficult. This is why ODBC and SQLITE in VW is so useful! If information can be referenced externally, it can also be Managed externally. Additionally, it can give VW an upper leg on competition with Autodesk Revit given that much of the informational libraries for Revit have been created by Manufacturers themselves. This however can apply record information to generic symbol library and expedite the process of creating massive symbol libraries. These databases can become quite large given the number of proprietary and standard building products. This information can include a lot of information including but not limited to specifications! Currently there is not sorting feature in ODBC and SQlite window. My request is to simply at a sorting function for record information, possibly similar to the way record information is sorted in worksheets database connection. I'm not sure if this is a big ask, but I think this could start the implementation of standardization in offices large and small that use VW

Hello, I would like to create a worksheet database whose criteria are "select all walls with the Pset_WallCommon IFC value Reference IWS-1** because here is the wall style Mark I want to use to divide my walls I tried the string =DATABASE((('Pset_WallCommon'.'Reference')='IWS-1**')) but it gives me no results, like it cannot read the IFC property When I use that field in a spreadsheet it requires the string =GETIFCPROPERTY(‘Pset_WallCommon’.’Reference’) so maybe I need to recall the IFC property some way? I tried some variants but nothing worked, can someone help me? Thank you very much

I've been struggling with finding a way to use keynotes effectively in Vectorworks - and for us, one of the most essential aspects is the ability to revise keynotes as a project proceeds through the design process. Our office uses keynotes with a numbered prefix keyed to the CSI division format, and all keynotes have the same number throughout a project. We only place keynotes in a sheet legend if the keynote actually appears on a sheet, and keynotes may frequently appear on many different drawings - plans, elevations, sections. Attached is a sample file showing an alternate system for placing and reporting keynotes, based on a keynote record format attached to a custom symbol. The system uses worksheets on each sheet layer to report the keynotes on that sheet, and a separate 'master' worksheet to handle global editing of keynotes. Global editing is limited - text or reference fields may be edited, but editing the actual keynote number will break the link - the keynote number is providing the key link to the worksheet. I'd love to get feedback or suggestions that would improve this system. 170527 VW 2017 test.vwx

Attached records not displaying in Data Pane in Resource Manager
Nathan Davies posted a question in Troubleshooting
Hi All Our company uses Vectorworks for kitchen and cabinet design. We use Interiorcad within this. I'm trying to setup Vectorworks to produce everything we need from pricing all the way through to production. As such I am trying to setup an appliance database, accessing relevant appliance symbols through the resource manager, which have record formats attached with relevant information i.e. model no. main specs, price etc. Idea being to add this into our pricing and other relevant documents. I have setup an excel file as an odbc data source, so that prices etc can be updated. When attaching the record directly to the symbol it will show up in a report produced, so it's attached fine, however.. details don't show up in the data pane in the resource manager. If I edit the symbol, deselect everything, and then attach a record, the reverse happens, the field titles will show up in the data pane in the resource manager, but I am unable to select Object Database Connection to link the record to one of the database entries. The idea is that the designer should be able to go into the resource manager, and at a glance see the relevant fields of each model to choose the appliance. Bonus question - One of the reports i want to produce is a list of the appliances for the fitters / workshop. Ideally I'd like to have QR codes for each appliance which can be scanned and open up the relevant fitting manual. Producing the QR code is not an issue, adding it to the excel database isn't the issue, but getting vectorworks to reproduce it on a worksheet is where I'm getting stuck, i.e. linking it to the database image, rather than automatically using the symbol image. Thanks in advance Nathan Davies-

My head doesn't compute the criteria interface properly. My criteria needs to be all symbols called Support_Plates on layer 1-Slab C1 and 1-Slab C2. Why does this: Turn into this?

Hello, I noticed a problem with the plants tool and the use of VectorWorks internal databases. Indeed, in my process I want to assign personal data to plant occurrences (for example zones, phases or other data). It works quite well overall (sometimes the data disappears for no reason, you have to be careful to have regular backups). You can easily replace a plant with another style of plant, and the custom data is well preserved. But I have a data loss problem when I want to use the group / ungroup the plants function. As much for the grouping of plants having different data fields, I can understand that VectorWorks cannot concatenate the data of the plants (it cannot know what is priority). But for the grouping of plants with the same personalized data, it would be interesting to be able to keep the identical fields filled in. And for the ungrouping of groups of plants, it would be good for the symbols resulting from a group with personalized data to find them once separated. So I don't know if this could be a bug or a feature request (wishlist), so I'm posting my message in this section. Thank you for your comments and suggestions if you have already had this scenario and found a solution. Best regards. Edgar

Data manager bug : Database disappeared after deleting a class
GatRed posted a question in Troubleshooting
Hi everyone, I'm experiencing an annoying bug which makes impossible for me to use v2021. I'm working with 2D/3D symbols for windows with custom database attached in the ressources manager, in order to makes .ifc exports. After I opened my v2020 file to Vectorworks 2021, I noticed that when I deleted a class, re-assigning the elements to another class, the database of my 2D/3D windows symbols disappeared after freezing a few seconds. I made 2 videos on macOS and on windows10, to show this behaviour, which are attached to this post. Does anybody know why this happened ? Or does anybody already meat this issue ? Meanwhile, I'm stuck under v2020… Thanks in advance for your feedback, with kind regards, GatRed GR-201219.mp4 GR-201222.mp4 -
Hello vectorworks community, I wonder how to achieve something like this: Have one symbol that its text parts are linked to one record format fields. It act as a container for storing of informations about any specific project that somebody in office was working on. Its about logging working time on daily bases...filling calendar. Informations consist of: Project ID, tasks worked on, time spent on working task, drawn by etc. Now I want to collect data through worksheet database particularly overall time spent on specific project for specific project phase. I wish I could type into one designated cell within worksheet field value (Project ID) and that way control criteria of database results. So the results show only items (symbols) where same Project ID is checked. Then whenever I need to type in different Project ID and get different results. Everything happening in one worksheet. I see that in some Preformated Reports materials quantity - take off you can type name of material directly into database header and get quantity of that material...yeah this is something closer...but i wish to have one cell apart of database where i could type in Project ID and control one database or even few databases (differ by project phase for specific project) results same time. Any idea how to achieve something like this. Is it at all possible? Thanks a lot for any input.

Hello Folks, I hope this is possible. I am trying to populate text within a data-tag with information drawn from a database. I have created a database and associated it with a record format. In the data tag, I have selected the text that I want to populate with the information from the database and it seems like it should work but it doesn't. It just displays the placeholder text. I've attached screen grabs of the settings. Any help would be appreciated! -Dylan I'm on VW 2020 SP1 (but updating to SP5 as I type) Please ignore the actual values, I was experimenting with how to enter information.

Is there a way to summarise items / sort items in a worksheet in which the data is imported from an excel spreadsheet, rather than created from the drawing as a database? When I'm trying this, the sort / summarise / sum items all appear to be greyed out.

Hi All, In an effort to learn (and not constantly bug users), can anyone point me towards resources on database string commands? I have a few worksheets that I want to develop that will require some custom database strings. I have no problem learning the code to develop them, I just can't seem to find the resources. I don't have any background in coding but this extended downtime the live events industry is stuck in is a great opportunity to learn. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Hello community, I wonder is there a way to rename multiple database row criteria (using same object style name) in same worksheet in one action? As you can see in attachment, I have a structure of wall (can be slab, roof..) with 10 components, but each component is directed to the same style name OP02. If i want to list all components for lets say different wall style with name OP03 I have to go to change it 10 times in database criteria...and thats tedious. Also I dont want to have preformatted worksheet for 10 - 20 different wall/slab/roof style in one building. So any thought or put it other way is there a better criteria approach for calling components with simpler criteria setup? Maybe script would do it? Thanks for help.

Heyo, I just tried to connect VW 2019 with a Ecxel document over the ODBC connection to transfer data. I try to use this Tutorial from @Miguel Barrera The Problem I have is when try to choose the dataconnection in VW, the options are not givin: I create connections in the ODCB Manager tfor every Ecxel Driver who exist: Why isnt this working in VW? I try to run VW with Admin Rights but still no result in the list.

Hi, sorry, but I cannot find out how to write my marionette object's parameters into database records (or worksheet cells), which was my reason to create them – can someone point me in the right direction? I wasn't able to find example scripts ... My objective is to create a door schedule that uses simple, 2D, self-made, non-IFC door symbols with data stamps, to be placed on 2D-drawings (draftsperson does not use walls, just lines). Most parameters will be strictly database records that never appear on the drawing, but WIDTH, WALL THICKNESS, and OPENING DIRECTION (L/R) should be 'hard-wired', i.e. taken from the plan, in order to avoid common mistakes. My first approach was to calculate opening WIDTH and wall thickness from the bounding box of the door symbol/group. This works fine, but only as long as the wall layout is strictly cartesian and the doors are not rotated or mirrored. Also, we would like to use door symbols that are larger than the opening width (including frames etc.), so we would no longer be able to calculate the width from the bounding box, wich seems to be all a worksheet can access. Or is there a way to access data from objects INSIDE a group that is listed on a worksheet? So I created a marionette object that draws the door opening based on parameters, because I expected it would be easy to access those parameters from a worksheet or to write them to an attached database record ... but I find that task surprisingly difficult. Am I missing something? So far, my marionette network, run as a wrapper, can draw a door based on two parameters OPENING WIDTH and WALL THICKNESS, and attempts to attach a pre-defined database record to that object, where it correctly fills the fields for wall thickness and opening width. However, the result is a simple group (not a PIO, so it cannot be manipulated by parameter later), and it is nested twice in otherwise empty groups, unnecessarily. If I convert the wrapper into an object node, it becomes the expected parametric plug-in-object that I can modify later, but it does not attach a database record to itself or writes its data to a record that I attach manually. What am I doing wrong? test door database.vwx this is what the door symbol plus tags should look like this is my marionette object node (so far, without tags, but okay ... if it only wrote to the database !!!

You can create a database of "Data Tags" but it can't seem to filter by style, or display the style being used. Any Ideas? Optimally I want to create a database of all data tags used in a file with a certain name and call up the parameters to check their values.

Dear VW aficionados, could anyone please explain to me the difference between the below. Most likely I would understand a 'sketch or visualisation' to it better in comparison to reading the Help menu where I can't digest the content. --> Reports, Records, Databases, Worksheets & Schedules <-- Am getting utterly confused about these ;0)) Any input is appreciated. Cheers, Grethe

ODBC connection is useful for those that have an external database and want to use values from it within Vectorworks. It is also helpful going the other way, allowing users to edit their external database from within Vectorworks. These are more advanced nodes that will require an understanding of setting up and working with external databases.-

VW Plant Database - Change in SP4? + How to delete duplicate items
ericjhberg posted a question in Troubleshooting
So we just recently started having problems with our plant database after having it work fine. I'm wondering if a change occurred in one of the recent Service Packs? Without informing users? Before the .exe file and folder used to be called 'VW Plants' and now it seems to be 'Vectorworks Plants'? This seemingly simple shift has me boggled because we track our favorite plants by checking the box for favorites...and they all disappeared. I am able to retrieve my old data, in tact, and find my favorites, but when I try to import the .usr file with just the favorites, I can't seem to select an option that just updates existing records with the "favorites" box checked. Instead, the only way I can seem to get those records in is by adding entirely new and often duplicate records into the database. When I do this I end up with two 'Plant name A's...one checked as a favorite and another unchecked. I want to be able to delete duplicate entries in the database. I have even found ones that come in it stock. Is there a way to quickly purge the database of duplicates based on a specific field (i.e. VW Latin Name)? Or Is there a way to import records from another database and have them simply update the records within the database without adding duplicates...mainly the check box for VW Favorites?
