  1. Hello All I am trying to figure out the best way to automate labeling of beams. Is there a way to add a data tag that will appear in plan, section and elevation? Can you make a custom data tag to achieve this? Thank you
  2. I am trying to create data tag to label speaker symbols in my drawing. However, I'm struggling to find the correct combination of constraint settings to prevent the text from falling outside the white box. The file includes data with various naming conventions that come up in my drawings that create the different sized tags. I have noticed that the issue is only on my right aligned tags. On the right aligned tags, I would like the purposes (top line of text) to be left left aligned to the left side of the white space, while the make/model (bottom text) is right aligned to the right side of the white space (like in the attached screenshot, where I have found that the desired effect is achieved only when the purpose label is longer than the make/model). data tags.vwx
  3. Hello, I am using data tags as callouts on planting plans to automate my workflow. However, the tag disappears when I ungroup the planting group to modify the planting layout and then group it again. Meaning I have to re-do the work and copy another data tag to reassign . This task is laborious and can lead to omissions. Can someone please point me to the correct workflow for automating planting callouts? Thanks in advance
  4. I'm starting to use the Data Tag tool for labeling my plants instead of the old tags. When I have a grouping of plants I notice the leader does not attach to the middle or one of the end plants but instead floats around looking not attached to anything. Like this: I really need the leader to be attached to a plant! I'm spending hours going through and manually attaching them. this is what my data tag dialog looks like: Is there anything I can do the change this? Or do I need to go back to using regular tagging? I did herar that was going away in the near future so I thought I should start using the data tags now. thanks for any help you can give! Laura
  5. I would like the ability to choose "insertion point" or "center" for auto placement. As it is a data tag seems to attach to the center of the object (when using the "all eligible object mode" at least). It would be nice to have a setting to snap to center of object OR snap to insertion point - especially with grouped objects, like multiple plants combined into a single plant object. Currently with grouped plant objects I have to repoint EVERY data tag to the proper place. Screen grab showing auto-placement and current insertion point: I don't see an option for this on any of the data tag style tabs - but it does seem like it should be on the "auto placement" tab. In all honesty I would like to have the ability to auto select the start or end of the grouped plant object - but that's a completely different wish. grouped plants need some tweaking...
  6. I love the functionality of Data Tags, they have completely changed our documentation workflow and data tracking, for the better. That said, I wish there were a few functionality upgrades. I'll post them in separate posts, so for this one...how data tags work on sheet layers in recognizing objects. It is clear that when adding a data tag in Viewport Annotations that it is designed to find the geometric center of the object, which may be fine for small or relatively "square" objects. Where this gets challenging is for objects that often span multiple viewports or asymmetric objects. For example, if you applied a Data Tag to the letter 'C', the Data Tag would be positioned in the void of the letter, not on the edges. The best practical example I have is a trail project where a long, linear trail is broken into several (10-20) different viewports with matchlines. To adequately identify the trail object (a single, closed polygon), the Data Tag tool will only find the object in the viewport that contains the geometric center point...not every viewport where the object is visible. To combat this, you have to break the object into a separate polygons per viewport. This is less than ideal becuase you have to break up geometry that should be simple, which enters opportunity for error in multiple ways. Even then, if multiple competing long, linear objects exist in one viewport, Data Tags defer to stacking order in the Design Layers to select which object to apply a tag to...making application of Data Tags almost impossible. You can use the Select Eligible Objects Mode to place all the Data Tags, but then positioning the leaders/arrows to accurately point to the correct object becomes an exhausting effort. Instead, Data Tags should be designed to recognize the edges and/or the fill of objects, not the geometric center point.
  7. Hello, I'm trying to do a calculation in a data tag that would give me the theoretical load or weight of an object (in this case a rectangle) as a function of its area. I had also tried to indicate a volume notion by multiplying the surface by a thickness (for mulch for example) and I have the same problem. It would almost work ... if the unit of measure was not displayed, because the "m2" disturbs the readability of the move. And it's impossible to remove "display unit symbol" with function #AREA#. I tried many options but it doesn't work 😪 However, with the #HHEIGHT# function, it is possible to ask not to display the unit ... I have tried to reproduce the #m_0_0# syntax manually as #sq m_0_0#, but it does not work ... Do you have a solution for me? And also, is there a list of calculation functions that can be used in the data labels? The help is more than sketchy in this area. Thank you in advance for your answers and solutions. Best regards. 8. I'm attempting to label plants using a custom data tag. I have shrubs, perennials and trees. When it's necessary to add a leader, everything works fine, but very often if I want to fine tune the leader end, to point to a specific plant or group, it is attempting to tag a different plant or group. Is there a way to force the leader to "connect" with the original tagged group, or to select a specific group? Holding "b" doesn't seem to let me "look through" other plants...
  9. Hi all, I was looking for some help in the worksheets and putting a letter in a row for each symbol in the data sheet. I also was wondering if the general version of Vectorworks allows you to use data tags in 2020? Also any beginners tips for worksheets and making a BOM for the documents would be helpful, like more records or symbols tips. Thanks, Colin
  10. I came across this problem recently and I think adding these two functions into tags would be the solution. Let me explain : There are numerous times when we as professionals need to provide information on construction documents that reference a specific element inside a unified workspace. I have been trying to unify various different code references to a single type of space object reference system without re-creating the their ID's from scatch all over again. Let, for example, take building code and lighting areas. 1. For building code - in order to analyze any spaces, i have come to the conclusion that a space would be described the envelope the building code dictates. In commercial spaces, this can be resolved by creating a space of all tenancies into the design layer, or into another design layer overlaying the plans. However, this is where the challenge comes in. Let's say you need to calculate the number of fixtures (i.e. takeoffs) by space. Or more importantly, let's say you need to provide a tabulation of the individual spaces for energy code - note by tenancy, but by rooms. What do you do? a. Option 1 - provide a single space for every room. That is the easier solution to showing on a worksheet the number of objects in a room. But, what if you also want to use those spaces to calculate occupancy for every tenant for the building code? You would essentially have to provide a record tenancy for every room that is in said tenancy space. However, for buiding code purposes, you would eliminate the ability to create a unified tag that summarizes the occupancy for the entire tenancy. Instead, you would only be able to do it room by room. Overall tenancy would then have to be on a worksheet level. Unifying and combing different elements like building code, energy code, zoning, and program would be easy on the one hand, on the other, checking the number from a plan examiner standpoint - would be a nightmare - the worksheets would be tremendously long. b. Option 2 - provide an overlay of spaces governing their own functions. If you need to provide an overall area for a space in building code - and given that the space would provide the area, it is easy to calculate the number of people for that tenancy. If you need to show the number of fixtures for each room, another space overlay would be created that can summarize the number of symbols and what symbols are in that particular room. The problem becomes - room id's. Tenancy would have one id. Space by spaces would have another, and there is no way to link them - except for location in space by ID and location in space by Name (as the function used in worksheets). This would ultimately join the complexities of different spaces that need to be shown on various drawings into a single coherent package - because these spaces ultimately overlap each other. Tags - is something that can be shown on drawings automatically, and adding just those two function would prove to be very useful especially when overlaying and unifying many different elements of construction drawings.
  11. When I create a custom Data Tag from the resource manager (called Plnt -Qty-ID ) to be used for plants and landscape areas I find that the rectangle does not expand to hold the text. However when I use the Plant Bubble (rectangle) in the OIP the rectangle expands with the amount of text. Is there a bubble like this that can be used when making a Custom Data Tag
  12. Hoping to find some step by step help with this because after reading the help topics and watching youtube videos I still don't get it The ah ha light is not coming on for me. Old dog, new tricks. I have been using VW constantly since 2012 designing exhibits and doing production drawings for 2000 sq ft trade show booths and 5000 sq ft hands-on museum spaces but I'm usually too busy to think about more than I absolutely need to get drawings from pretty pictures into the shop. I want to be able to do what is shown in the image from a vendor below and I know VW can do it. I'm on 2020 Let's say I have all of the parts as symbols in one of my Favorites. I start a new file and import the parts I need and build this thing (I'll attach a small sample of the right tower) Does the Description import with it? Should I do something in my Favorites file to make it easier for multiple new files? How do I tag the parts and multiples of parts? How do I turn that into the report as shown with quantities and such? Remember step by step because I've spent a good bit of time on this and I'm just not getting it A small sample of the attached file would be great for reverse engineering as well Every thing is an imported Symbol except for the top 4 - 2x2x19 corner extrusions which are the taller symbol pieces converted to solid sections While I have your attention, is there any reason why these types of parts (in 20 x the quantity shown here) would make VW sometimes run as slow as doggie doo doo on a damp day? Free beer when you come to Tampa if you can get me on the right track Bematrix sample file.vwx
  13. Is there a way to auto assign a data tag to a specific class on insertion? You can do this for other symbols but I can’t see how to do that for data tag styles (or any other styled objects for that matter). For example I have made some custom sanitary fixture tags that I would like to automatically go on to the sanitary fixture class.
  14. I would like to set up a Data tag that will pull floor and building area from a massing model. I am not sure how to assign the data fields to a massing model object Any thoughts?
  15. Just moving into 2019 now, and transferring one of our larger projects to take advantage of the new features. Having testing 2019 through SPs 1-4 and now on 5.2 with smaller projects, we are confident to take the dive. First off, the data tag has been such a breath of fresh air, in terms of a common-sense tool release, so thanks again to the devs at VW. Secondly, a couple of questions for other users who have being using 2019 in the wild since its release and the data tag tool. a) Is it possible to un-link an existing data tag thats been placed in the annotations viewport, to another object? e.g, A tower type building, you tag all the windows on level 1, in the annotations space, you then duplicate the whole layer (to do the next story up), you change the layer visibilities for the viewport to have the design layers for the next level up. Then realise the data tags from the previous level are still in the annotations space for this new level, however theyre still linked to the windows from the level below. Would be great to relink these tags to the new level. I havent found a way yet, if others know of way that would be great. b) Is it possible to have the data tag look into design layer viewports on a design layer, while your in the annotation space of the sheet layer? Again, I couldn't see a way, wondering if anyone else knows. If neither are possible, I will file an enhancement request. Cheers, Tui
  16. I'm trying to make a Z value data tag for hanging position, I don't see it listed so I have tried "Z Location" and "RelDimZ" without any success. Is there any workaround or if it is not listed there is no way of having it?
  17. Would be great if Data Tags could be used in annotations for elevations and link to the windows and doors to call them up in Elevation when the project layers are referenced.
  18. Is there a way to get the data tag to show secondary units when having it show a dimensional value?
  19. Greetings, I'm just starting to develop some customized wall types and would like to start using tags for calling out wall types, window types, etc. Do i have to change the wall type name to W1, W2, W3, etc. to have the data tag identify the wall or window type? It's a great feature that i'd like to adopt quickly.
  20. The 2019 Data tag tool looks really good. Tagging objects is simple but I cannot figure out how to use the information properly. The space labels I had set up in 2018 for finish plan and floor plans no longer work in 2019. I think I can modify the graphics of the new room data tags but I can't get the info to layout correctly in a room schedule. I cannot find any procedures on how to tag a space and generate a room schedule base on the 2019 data tag tool. I'm sure I can come up with a work around but there has to be a procedure that Vectorworks has worked through using the 2019 tool sets. How is Vectorworks designed to tag a space and make a room finish schedule? Is there a file or video out there that can show me?
  21. Hi all, I'm looking for a little help with Data Tags. These look like a great way to make notes about cable runs on my plans. What I'd like to do is place data tags on my plan and enter in information about cable IDs, lengths etc. I'd then like to make a worksheet of that data. I'm struggling a bit with the worksheet part of this exercise. The 'User-entered Fields' are an easy way of generating fields on the data tags, but I can't see these anywhere on in the worksheet dialogue. I've also looked at linking Field Records with data tags, but haven't had any joy there either. Any assistance much appreciated! Cookie
