I might be working on somebody's Class template soon so I'm revisiting first principles. My main questions is, what advantages are there to using a standardised classification system—such as Uniclass—besides the following? You don't have to reinvent the wheel Improved collaboration with other consultants and new team members, who may already be familiar with the standard. VW Classes don't seem to matter a lot when it comes to BIM IFC output. Is this the case, or am I missing something? Classes also seem a little less important with the advent of Materials in VW. The main purpose seems to simply be the internal organisation of one's model. I've been using a hierarchical, plain-language template I developed many years ago, based on Uniclass 1.4, which looks like this: A-Annotations-GA Plans A-Annotations-General Notes A-Fabric-Walls A-Fabric-Walls-External A-Fabric-Walls-External-Existing removed A-Fabric-Walls-External-Existing retained A-Fabric parts-Core-Plywood A-Fabric parts-Internal finishes-Plaster A-Fittings and furniture-Fitted A-Services-Heating and ventilation-Extract A-Site-Enclosure-Wall And to incorporate control of line thickness for detailing purposes I recently added: A-Fabric parts-Core-Plywood-Thick A-Fabric parts-Core-Plywood-Thin Very easy to use and understand due to the plain language and logical hierarchy. Uniclass, while also hierarchical, is mostly coded rather than plain language, and looks like this: A-EF-25-10-M-WallExternal A-Pr-25-71-33-M-Glass A-Zz-20-20-D-Dimension And the thing is I can never seem to find a compelling reason to switch to this, away from my plain-language template. Convince me why I should.

Dear Vectorworks Would it be possible to issue up-to-date Uniclass 2015 classification tables with every service pack in future? Table Pr for example was updated in April 2023, and is now on revision 1-30. The version that ships with VW is v1-19. For those interested, the csv that works with the lookup classification tables in the materials properties dialog can be found here https://www.dropbox.com/t/195w5kmiIoYa4A2Q I have saved it as a Dropbox link because I cannot upload csv files to the forum. Save it in the Libraries/Defaults/Classifications folder in the application folder or workgroup folder. Note to Vectorworks... These tables now include a 'Sub-Object' column and this throws Vectorworks off the scent, and the descriptions that we rely on to find the correct code are missing. The csv above has the sub-object column deleted. Thanks.

In the 'Define Material' dialog box are four tabs for entering data. In the Construction tab I can select a classification standard. I can choose between OmniClass and Uniclass. Can I add a custom classification standard to the list? The Vectorworks help says But I can't find any instructions, my Libraries/Defaults/Classification folder is empty. Does anybody knows how this works?

I'm building a library of walls based on the popular CSR Redbook wall types for our Australian users of Vectorworks. How do I know which Classification I should use? Omniclass, Uniclass etc. or can they remain unclassified??? Any ideas or pointers will be helpful.
