  1. I think it's important for VW to upgrade it's pointcloud visualisation machine. Lidar scanning increasingly becomes necessary for complex projects and renovations and it would be great if VW received larger files - perhaps deploying a LOD logic (don't know how unreal engine/Autocad/Recap does it, but large files run smoothly without downgrades). At the same time it's important to allow users to see pointcloud data well. The only usable mode is true colour at the moment - so one is limited by the quality of the lidar machine's camera. Autocad is extremely well made to receive and present pointcloud data and it would be a game changer for VW to allow the same level of visual performance. I am attaching a video of some scan data we made in Nicosia, Cyprus which are being shown in a preset Autocad colourscheme. I believe it shows how clear the depth is communicated - assisting the architect to model/draw efficiently around the data. Compared to the VW custom gre yscale colour-scheme that takes away all depth data:
  2. VW>AutoCAD question: --I want to export a VW drawing such that when I open it in CAD the following is true: all the parts/components/lines/groups/etc of a lighting instrument are on layer '0'. The actual symbol instance in the drawing is on layer 'Lighting-units'. --In VW, I've edited the symbol so all parts of the light are class '0'. When I insert a bunch of examples of that symbol in the drawing on class 'Lighting-units', things behave as expected: if I turn off either class, all the symbols disappear. --When I export to CAD, and try the same thing, freezing the '0' layer doesn't make the symbols disappear, but freezing 'Lighting-units' does make them disappear (as expected.) --In CAD, groups DO behave as expected here, i.e: the layer '0' still turns things invisible when frozen (the inner parts of the group are '0') as does 'Lighting-units' layer (the group as a whole is in this layer). Running VW2021 and AutoCAD 2023 all on PC. Here are my export settings if that's useful:
  3. All, I am trying to learn the best approach to creating property lines / tagging arcs for a "Site Plan". When developing a simple site model, using bearings, I have encountered no issues. However, I am currently working on a plan that is more challenging and requires property lines that have arcs. I have attached what I am working on, and would welcome any support on the project. Thanks, Ryan Russell p.s. - I have a working document that was exported from Revit, and imported into Vectorworks. The problem I am encountering is that it won't scale well when I try to drop in another model created in VW2022. So, naturally, I am trying to see if I cannot just build this out entirely within VW. 4. I have been given an Autocad 2010 DWG file (and more recent versions) to import in to Vectorworks I do the import the way I normally have done, but this time the imported image is problematic. Colours and line thicknesses make the drawing unreadable (The fat blue and fat red splurges are actually room numbers/ door numbers etc) Changing classes does not appear to make a difference. We tried with DXFs also but same problem Is the sender creating DWGs incorrectly? the sender also sent us a "CBT" file (CW_Plotstyle_2021.ctb) but we don't know what to do with it!! I hope you can suggest what to do? Many thanks I have: Vectorworks 2019 SP-6 Mac OS 10.15.7
  5. I'm coming from AutoCAD and can barely survice without the "Measure from" or "Place between two points". How do I do that in VW? Say I want to place a window exactly between two points, or if I'm putting an object at a specific distance from another object? Probably a super simple solution, but I can't get how to do it. Thanks!
  6. Hi guys, I am currently working on Autocad for a couple of projects. I want to use the resource library that I have created over the years on Vectorworks. Although all the resources are embedded in the file (in the resource browser) and are not in the drawing space. I could drop all the items to the drawing and export them, but that would take ages... Is there a way of easily exporting all my resources to DWG? Thanks in advance, Russo
  7. PROBLEM: Vectorworks can't properly locate referenced DWG onto a model PROCESS: We reference DWG files created by our consultants (as is normal for any architects workflow) - First, we make sure all files have the same (0,0,) point - Then, we import these DWGs as design layers in a VWX file, so we can append class names for better organisation. - Finally, we Reference this VWX file and put them in our Project File. MANEFESTATION: On one terminal (where were did the imports), the file is in the correct location. However, in the shared project file, other terminals open this file and the position is wrong. [See enclosed screenshots] Also, if there was permission issue, causing us to re-save this project file, we also lose the correctly referenced location. This is frustrating and wonder if others have experienced similar issues.
  8. I'm sure some of you have already come across this issue but I thought I would share my recent experience with importing DWG files. I've been doing this a while and have never come across this issue. While importing a DWG file I kept getting this strange result of most everything coming in as extruded objects. I went back to a DWG clone software and discovered that the offending objects all had a thickness assigned to them. Once I set the thickness to zero and imported again the issue was resolved.
  9. Hi all, I've been trying to troubleshoot a file that a friend sent over. The task is to export a lighting plot which has been drawn in Vectorworks into DWG with all the 3D Spotlight objects in its proper 3D space when being opened in AutoCAD. The lighting plot includes lighting trusses that are at an angle, so Design Layer Viewports have been used to properly display the angled trusses in 3D. I have discovered that once hybrid symbols are being sent into DLVP I am unable to export the 3D objects to DWG properly. The DLVP objects that are exported are in its angled orientation but only with the 2D elements exported and not the 3D elements. The lighting truss and lighting fixtures that are not sent into DLVP - i.e. those that are in its "normal" horizontal orientation remains exported as expected. To demonstrate, I have created a VWX test file with Spotlight 3D objects and exported it to DWG. Attached is the 3D test VWX file, another VWX file with the DWG reimported back in, as well as a couple of snapshots with the export settings. In the snapshots, the truss with its angled orientation is on the left, while the right is the truss with its normal orientation. Possible (serious) bug, or am I doing something wrong? 10. Greetings all, I'm converting a DWG lighting plan to Vectorworks and have run into a problem with some of the instrument symbols from the DWG. My usual tactic for this is to import the DWG into VW, then select each set of symbol types by name (All of the 2k fresnels for example). Then replace those with my 2k fresnel symbol & run the convert to instrument command. This was working well until... some of the original symbols in the DWG are drawn a very long way from the origin (38km in one example). If I replace these with my instrument symbols, they end up a long way off the plan. I can't do a global move on these either as they have all been individually rotated to indicate focus, so effectively all end up with a different offset. Any ideas much appreciated!
  11. We often work directly with civil engineers who are stuck in Autodesks Civil3D world. I know that the suite of tools they use to model terrain, roads, and sites isn't too far off from Vectorworks site models and site modifiers. Everytime we try to collaborate with Civil3D users, we have to dumb the data down to a base .dwg and in doing so we lose a lot of what Civil3D calls AeCc objects. These have a lot of information included that is useful, including the basic graphic attributes and operability. It would be awesome if the import commands for .dwgs or whatever file type is best can better aide the interchange between the two programs! And for that matter, the interchange should work both ways. I should be able to send files with objects that a Civil3D user can easily use and manipulate!
