  1. I'm working with McGregor + Coxall on a little issue they are having with displaying in OpenGL. The attached model is a reference of several referenced IFC files. The model as very odd geometry and I can't clip the parts shooting off the the left. The file, with 3D models and Site Model and planting is 782 MB. As you see in the video a part of the model is getting clipped. Can anyone help us to resolve this issue? I was thinking it was a setting yet we all experience the same issue. Your timely response will be greatly appreciated. 2020 0323 Open GL Rendering Issue.mov
  2. Licensed Architect in New York with over 20 years of experience in a wide variety of project types - specifically residential projects. I have been using Vectorworks (currently version 2020) for over 20 years, in 2D and 3D.Very proficient in 3D. Fees are negotiable.
  3. Hi, really struggling with this. We are now working in 3D - fantastic!-, but the big issue is that once everything has been extruded etc, the 2D looks very different from what we are used to....bringing me to redraw 2D plans AFTER the 3D has been generated just for presentation purposes. A BIG pain and loss of time which I am sure can be avoided but cannot work out how. Have experimented with different renders etc but there must be a function/box/option that I am missing. Can anyone rescue me please? 2D plan BEFORE 3D 3D view (Open GL) 2D top/plan view AFTER 3D 2D top view (open GL) after 3D
  4. Tonight I discovered that my 3D Label legends were not appearing on my elevations. I attempted to select the data I wanted to appear in the Label Legend Manager, but after clicking done and exiting out of the LL Manager my data was still not showing up. I would then re-enter the LL Manager, I would select the data I wanted to"Use in 3D", and then edit the layout. However, each time the data would not appear on a Design layer or Sheet Layer after I exit the editing mode. Is anyone else having this problem?

  6. [*UPDATE*] As pointed out by post below. When entered a auto-hybrid object via a clip cube, the auto-hybrid object does not appear in edit view. Please change it so that Auto-Hybrid objects can be accessed for editing whether it is form a clip-cube or not. ________________________________________________ Currently (in 2019), we can create Auto Hybrid Objects of complex shapes for 2D display. But once the object is turned into an Auto Hybrid Object, there isn't a way to edit it. Would be great if Auto-Hybrid Objects can be edited, and the 2D display reflects the changes. If this is something already available in 2020, do let me know.
  7. Hi, I am having trouble with getting exported 3D section viewports to consistently appear cleanly as an exported DWG to match the PDF viewports. Viewports on a sheet that are plan section viewports or detail viewports often lose their crop box and the DWG line data is very unclean or does not appear at all when exported. Fills are also lost. I have attached screenshots to show how the bottom drawing is not appearing after exporting as 2D graphics in model space and re-imported into rhino. It appears as a block instance and once exploded appears a coloured surface and not cad data. The Hidden Line dialogue box is selected for foreground render. Help with this would be greatly appreciated as it makes sending clear well annotated information to consultants from 3D model in 2D very difficult.
  8. Hi all, I am still fairly new to VW working with a new practice, with a background in ArchiCAD. Currently the drawing templates are split into 3 separate models: Concept Planning Construction In ArchiCAD, the use of "renovation filters" allowed all work to take place in one model, assigning elements of the building to different stages of the project. Does VW provide any similar function? Thanks in advance.
  9. Hi everybody, I am newbie Vectorworks user. I just signed up to the community to hopefully figure out a problem I am having with the so called Hybrid Object. Starting from the bottom, I have created a solid by subtracting a simple solid (cylinder) from a negative void of a second solid as in the image. This apparently resulted in what is an Hybrid Object. As I want to further model the 3D form Vectorworks warns me with the following message: "Hybrid Objects can only be rotated in a plane parallel to the active layer plane.Would you like the working plane set to the active layer plane?" If I say yes, the working plane is automatically set to make the object rotate on the Z axis. Instead I am looking to rotate it on the axis which will position it flat on the larger side. I hope I have been clear enough but If I wasn't please bear with me. Thanks, Flavio
  10. Hi Everyone, I've uploaded some beginner tutorials on my YouTube account. These are for entertainment people just starting to try 3D in Vectorworks from 2D. It's angled from the POV of a Production Designer using solid modeling techniques. I have plans for more intermediate and advanced tutorials in the future, but wanted to start simple with the basics in small digestible chunks. Topics covered are: Extude Extrude along Path Sweep If you've ever taken any of my classes at NYU or through the USA Local 829 Union, these subjects are covered there. Future videos will cover general entertainment workflows and build out of Theaters, Ballrooms and Arena/Stadiums for drafting packages and renderings, as well as more beginner concepts. These first videos are for people just starting to try 3D in their art departments and looking for a general understanding of how basic modeling functions in a VW 3D workflow. Comments and feedback welcome at any time. You can find my channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/evanbrooklyn/videos Thanks, e.
  11. Hi, Every time I try to hidden line render a 3D file, Vectorworks stops responding and never comes back (I've left it overnight). It's been happening for the last 3 days with multiple files of various sizes. I'm able to render open gl and realistic final (although this has been taking up to an hour), just hidden line seems to be a problem. I've rebooted the program and the laptop several times, as well as uninstalling and reinstalling Vectorworks - still no joy. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm using 2019 on Mojave. Thanks in advance
  12. We would like the clip cube 3D export option. Our entire building file is too big for a quick export. And for various consultants, and we just need a small part to be shared (e.g. Stair). But would still like to attach a bit of contextual information such as the surrounding floor and the ceiling in the said export file. Splitting the file takes too long, and a clip cube 3D export would be so convenient and efficient for our workflow. Similar request has been made in 2017. Looking forward to seeing this update soon.
  13. Hi there, usually you can create a 2D object and change the Plane in the "Object Info" window to layer so it appears in 3D views. Usually you can also change the z axis and move the object in 3D space. Now i have the problem that i can do all that except setting the z Axis. As soon I enter a digit into the z coord. and hit enter, the plane changes to screen and resets the z coord.. This only happens in the current document I am working in. Also when I open the document stay in Top/Plan view, I can change the plane to layer and set the z coord without resetting. After i change into 3D view I no longer can do this. Does any one know a solution to this? -Alex working with VW2019 SP3 on a Mac Mojave 10.14
  14. I'd appreciate the ability to right click to easily set a shortcut in the flyover override mode ctl+center wheel press+right click would set origin of flyover, maybe
  15. Hello, I have stairs created with AutoCAD, which is a 3D volume (solid). Imported to Vectorworks and they appear as NURBS inside a Group. I'm not able to convert the NURBS to a generic Solid. Is there a possibility to have this 3D import as a Solid in Vectorworks and not NURBS? Thank you in advance!
  16. I've been workin on this model from a while, and it's been difficult since the beginning with constant freeze and crash of the program, I'm actually using VW 2019 SP 2 in windows 10 Lenovo Y50-70 with i7 processor and 960M Nvidia graphics. My problem is that rendering the model to Unshaded Polygon and then export a viewport is taking forever and eventually the program get freeze, I'm using 150 DPI for the sheet layer. Somebody please help me I have no idea what is the problem, the 3D model has multiple extrudes but I expect my laptop can work it.
  17. Are there any plans for a complete MEP modeller in the near future?, we need to compete with Archicad and Revit on that specific area.
  18. Hi all, I am looking to improve my workflow in Vectoworks (2017). I am an exhibitions designer, and we tend to span between architecture and industrial design. In an individual project we will have to design not only floor plans and elevations of a building, we also design the individual objects placed in the building. I was wondering if anyone could site some links or offer some tips etc. that I might find useful. I have been working in VW since 2008 but haven't fully utilized 3D in vectorworks. Instead I would mass out my 3D work in Rhino or Sketchup then export DXF's and import those into VW. However, that hasn't always generated the best results and it is cost prohibitive to keep all these applications up to date so export functions arent't always reliably available. We tend to end up drawing huge amounts of individual elevation drawings when we could be using the section viewport command to create them. We are considering doing everything in 3D and generating the 2D views from that. I am assuming there are limitations to how much can be crammed in a single VW file before it becomes unstable. Do you recommend creating one 3D file that has the bulk of objects massed in the space, then creating another separate file with more detailed individual objects "i.e. an interactive exhibit"? However, having multiple individual files offers its own set of challenges with regards to updating layers etc. I am a little familiar with workgroup referencing, but I am not sure that it works in that way. I guess this is a pretty complex question haha but if anyone cares to chime in, I would be happy to hear from you. Cheers!
  19. Hey all, While importing VWX truss symbols from the subscription library, the symbol shows up as a solid in 3D (see attached). Does anyone know how to make them show up like a normal truss. Like when using the Spotlight Truss Tool Plugin?
  20. Hi all, I've been trying to troubleshoot a file that a friend sent over. The task is to export a lighting plot which has been drawn in Vectorworks into DWG with all the 3D Spotlight objects in its proper 3D space when being opened in AutoCAD. The lighting plot includes lighting trusses that are at an angle, so Design Layer Viewports have been used to properly display the angled trusses in 3D. I have discovered that once hybrid symbols are being sent into DLVP I am unable to export the 3D objects to DWG properly. The DLVP objects that are exported are in its angled orientation but only with the 2D elements exported and not the 3D elements. The lighting truss and lighting fixtures that are not sent into DLVP - i.e. those that are in its "normal" horizontal orientation remains exported as expected. To demonstrate, I have created a VWX test file with Spotlight 3D objects and exported it to DWG. Attached is the 3D test VWX file, another VWX file with the DWG reimported back in, as well as a couple of snapshots with the export settings. In the snapshots, the truss with its angled orientation is on the left, while the right is the truss with its normal orientation. Possible (serious) bug, or am I doing something wrong? 21. Hi All, I'm gradually getting to grips with 3D Vectorworks, but still finding some simple things frustrating, and I'm sure its just my lack of knowledge! Is there a way to move things to a specific 'global' z height? For instance, I want to move an object to sit on 'z=0', but there is a bunch of geometry around there which makes it hard to snap precisely. Or, I want to move the object from within an awkward 3D view. Any tips or advice?? A
  22. Hi All, I've reached the point where I'm trying to extract some 2D images from our first full 3D modelled project. I've done a bit of googling around but can't find any clear definitive advice about how to create 2D plans. Also it would be good to know any potential pitfalls or things to watch out for when modelling to achieve good 2D plan results.. As far as I can tell there are two options: 1- Make a viewport in the Traditional 2D way, as previously done when drawing in 2D. i.e. when creating a second floor plan, only the '2nd floor plan' layer would be turned on in the viewport. Any info from layers below (i.e. a ground floor roof, a Staircase drawn on the 1st Floor layer but which arrives at the 2nd floor plan) would have to be drawn on separately. Not ideal or very 'Smart' really, could end up with some inconsistencies. 2- Make a Section Cut viewport using either a) the section cut viewport tool, or b) using the clipping cube tool. The whole model would be turned on, so elements from below will appear. Care would have to be taken to get a good 'clipping' distance. Advantage is that it could show information from below, such as lower level roof structures or double height spacers. But this can include information you don't want to see sometimes. For instance, in a second floor plan I may see some outwards opening door swings from the ground floor plan below protruding out. Any advice from some of you seasoned 3D pros would be great! Thanks, A
  23. Is it possible to influence the order of Layers and classes when exporting 3D PDF? I have an order of Layers 01, 02, 03, etc... and I want them to be exported in that order as a 3D PDF and stay in that order when opening my PDF viewer. Is this possible? Right now they stay in a disorganised order. Thank you!
  24. Why is it that Hardscapes do not allow for alignment of Render Textures in similar ways to other solid objects (i.e. extrudes and floors). The entire Render Tab disappears when using Hardscape Objects. This is not good and should be fixed ASAP.
  25. Hey everyone, thanks in advance for your consideration. I have been using VectorWorks for about 2.5 years (Im using VectorWorks 2016 SP6 for Mac) (I have attached a specs list of my Mac in the attachments ) I am trying to do a 3d Perspective View of a room, it has Wall, Door and Window objects along with some furniture items imported as sketch-up objects. It works all-right if i view it in wire-frame mode, but when i go to OpenGl (occasionally) or Final quality (always) it gets garbled and doesn't produce a correct image. For some reason, shaded and other polygons modes are working fine as well. Im only facing issues with Final Quality and Open Gl modes. Please let me know if i am doing something wrong or should check some setting, (My 3d visualising setting is set to maximum : VectorWorks>Preferences>3d Rotation>Detailed) I have worked on a similar project last month with lots of sketch-up objects and not faced any issues. (I am adding an image of this file as well) Thanks for helping ! 3d-Rahul_sir.vwx
