  1. I’m not sure how most people generate 3D object, but in our office we turn 2D polygons, rectangles etc. in hardscapes, then in the Object Info, under 'Draw 3D’ Go: 3D type > Slab. Then from there you can edit slab thickness, elevation etc. In VW 2016 you were able to set negative thicknesses to the slab. For instance: say you have a step at a height of -600 elevation then you set the step thickness at -150. You know the top of the step is at a height of -600 below 0 and then another -150 down to the next step, starting the next step at an elevation of -750. In 2017 it seems you can’t set a slab thickness of less than 0 anymore. Meaning, if I use the same example, if I have a step with an elevation of -600 (this you can do in 2017) and enter a thickness, I have to enter 150 to get the same effect however the elevation of the step will be -450 now. The next step after this one will then need to be -750 at 150 thickness to give it a height of -600. Doing this for all 3D Hardscape-Slab objects in a drawing becomes incredibly confusing and makes us question our accuracy at every change therefor slowing production down to a grind... Could we have this changed back to the way it was? Cheers, Dan
  2. I was reading another post (LINK HERE) and it starting veering into an interesting territory, so rather than clogging up the bottom pages of that feed, I thought I would start another with the subject matter more clearly defined. 2D vs. 3D vs. BIM? It seems to me that the potential of BIM and digital technologies is taking us away from traditional project documentation and delivery methods. 2d plans, sections, details, elevations, etc. are still the currency that we deal with on a day-to-day, and I have noticed that many of the posts and troubleshooting that is happening on this forum are dealing with ways of translating often complex 3d digital design work and details into traditional 2d plans or visa versa, taking 2d linework and starting the process of taking that to the 3d level. VW tries to make this easy, but at the end of the day, I often feel I spend more time trying to make 3d read in 2d than if I just drew it in 2d to begin with. 3D DIGITAL DELIVERY The real reason for this post is to float out the idea and to see if people have any experience or are looking to start...digital delivery. What I mean by this is, rather than delivering traditional plan set full of 2-dimensional drawings, are we heading to a world where we communicate with 3d models? With the advent of 3D PDFs and augmented reality/immersion as means of sharing design, is it possible that we will be entering a world without paper where everything is decided and built from a digital 3d model? WHERE ARE WE GOING WITH THIS? I'm interested to hear what people's experiences are with BIM and digital delivery. What are the things holding this up? What will the standards be? Getting cities and jurisdictions on board seems like the largest hurdle since paper plans have always been the media of record.
  3. I'm working on an EU bridge competition for which a structural stress analysis model is required. 1. Would anyone happen to know who does this sort of thing? 2. Does vectorworks export to any common structural software (other than the autodesk empire standards)? thanks -J
  4. I've been working on a 3D project which requires a few curved walls that are cut out shapes not just solid objects. I used the 3D deform tool for one and it worked great, but now I'm trying to use it again on another wall and it has been failing. This wall is a more complicated shape, but I made it the same way I made the others, so I see no reason why the deform tool shouldn't work with it. Does anyone know why the tool might not work now, and how I can fix my object to be more compatible with the deform tool?
  5. Hi there, lately I am working a lot with the tool "unwinding plane" (don't know how it is called in english). I encountered, that if it is a cylinder, everything is fine, but if this cylinder has something cut out, the plane is a little off on every side. Sometimes visible without zooming in. So the problem is, I want to send this data to a laser cutter and it has to be a 100%. Could someone explain why this is happening? To me it is a more or less simple mathematical thing like pi*D. If you want to test it on your on, just create a cylinder and another one where you cut out something. I used that same cylinder just flipped it 90degrees. Thanks in advance!
  6. Hi all, I've been creating a new 3D model from existing venue drawing and I'm stumped at the DLVP not displaying 3D labels of lighting fixtures. I have turned on all classes and layers. The DLVP also has "Display Planar Objects" checked in the OIP, as seen in the attached snapshot. When I navigate the view to View Left/Right, the 3D labels show up though. Possible bug? Gabriel
  7. Hello! Today my 3D area appears all weird with a "saw" shape and I dont know what is going on. Yesterday it was good. This is the second time it happens to me. Any idea whats happening and how can I solve this problem? I really hope that I dont have to do all over again, because I dont have much more time to work on the project and do it again from scratch. Thank you!!!
  8. I'm Trying to create rocks and I'm using the draped surface method which creates the desired look, however, it take FOREVER to adjust it to have a rock outline from the square it starts as. I have tons of custom rocks I have to do this to and I was wondering if there is a faster way to create a 3D rock with the desired outer shape already present so I don't have to spend so much time reshaping the edge of the draped surface.
  9. Hi everyone, is it possible to use normal maps in vectorworks? Or will this be a feature for 2018 when it has the r18 integrated?
  10. Hello everyone I´m starting to work with vectorworks, and I also have the handicap that I have the programme in German because I´m currently working at an architectural office in Berlin. I need to make a 3d model of the terrain of a big area for a masterplan. I have the contour lines in 2D, indicating a difference in height of 1 meter each one. What´s the best method I can use? Do I need to put different stacks in each line to indicate the level it has, or there is a way to convert them to 3d? Sorry if it´s a very basic question, but I´m having a very difficult time trying to understand everything
  11. I'm trying to figure out how to duplicate on object (symbol) along a 3D polygon with a marionette node. The command Edit>Duplicate Along Path works great but not in a custom marionette script. Any ideas?

Surface Area of a 3D Solid

Is there a way to determine the surface area of a 3D solid? I have a multifaceted solid with about 50 different faces. (essentially a single component solid of a modeled building) How can i find the total area without clicking on each surface and viewing the properties? Thanks!
  13. Hi everyone, I just experienced the following issue. The same file, opended in VW2012 with an "old" mac and opened in VW2017 with a brand new machine. Why does it take longer on the new machine with the latest hardware? I mean, the ram is the same both 8GB but in the old it has only 1333MHz and also both have the same cpu an i5 with 3.2 GHz but also the i5 in the old machine is almost 5 years old...? How can I improve it, or will it be improved within the servie packs? How is this even possible...i would realy like to understand it. All the best and thanks in advance! Cheers volker
  14. Hi! I'm trying to use the flyover tool to move around a 3D model but it seems it only moves the active layer. The "plane" on all of my layers are set to "layer" but the other non-active layers remain in place as if they were set to "sheet." How can I set the flyover tool to move around all of the visible layers? Is there something else I am missing here? Thanks!
  15. Hi there, Does anyone know the export settings (I'm on 2015 designer) to export a DWG with both 2D & 3D elements? I have 5 viewports to 3d objects & they dont seem to be exporting , only the annotations. I would like to keep the format of the sheet, with all the annotations etc. Thanks, Liz
  16. Hi there everyone, atm I am checking the webview but so far i couldn't turn on light and create a night scene. could someone give me a hint how to create this? So I want a night scene with not more than 8 lights - cause this is max. atm Would be great to get some help on this one ;-) Cheers from germany, Volker
  17. I have drawn 3d objects to scale in the model space. I have created a viewport for this object & for some reason when I change the scale to what should be correct, it comes out super small. All my 2d plans etc scale fine in the viewport - its just the 3D viewport for some reason... Any ideas? Thanks Liz
  18. Hey, I am setting up quite a few working drawings in sheets. I have all of my comments I need already drawn up in 3D. When I go to change the view in the viewport from plan to left, right etc - the object I am trying to capture disappears off into the distance somewhere meaning I have to edit the crop on my viewport. Sometimes its moved so far I can't even see it. This is time consuming & frustrating - anyone have any ideas as to how I speed this work flow up? Thanks all Liz
  19. Today I have been having an issue with 3D geometry disappearing. IE: When I'm looking at it in Top/Plan it is there, but randomly when viewing it in lets say Front Isometric it is selectable but invisible. I cannot see anything on screen. Im wondering if its a corrupt file or if its an issues others have had or have found a solution to. (Working in Spotlight 2017) Thanks!
  20. Hi, I'm designing a building which is based on a simple barn extrusion, however this is complicated through the building fanning out in plan and an angled pitch of the roof. Please see attached screen shots. I believe the change in angle and height of pitch is creating a very small hyperbolic paraboloid roof structure (if very small). I would like to model this roof which allows for a fairly easy change as the project evolves (still in early feasibility stage). I am fairly new to modelling in 3D in Vectorworks (used to 2D) and would very thankful in any help in modelling this roof. Many thanks, Christina
  21. I am having an issue orbiting around models in 3D view. When I orbit around the models in narrow perspective the models disappear as the camera rotates. When I orbit in orthogonal mode, various geometry obscures itself and stretches over the screen whilst bits of the model also disappear. This issue also extends to my viewports as some of them wont render the models depending on the elevation angle. However when I go into the viewport the models do appear until I begin rotating. The file has 2 other files referenced into it. However all of the drawings are centred on the origin, which are close to the 0,0 axes. Any ideas?
  22. Hi everyone, I have some trouble with the webview/vr that came with vw2017. Lately I observe, that the export takes like forever. 3D-model hast 123MB export in lowest quality gains 44MB but takes 10+ minutes to create (when choosing not to upload on vw-server), it has 79MB and takes almost 30 min+ to create. It also takes the same time when uploading to the VW-server, this was way quicker a few days/weeks ago. What happend here? Def. not a problem of my internet connection - see screenshot for speed. I can't do anything with vectorworks while it is exporting because there is that beachball constant spinning. I also exported just the logo, and this took also more than 10 minutes....?! //Way quicker when every lettre is seperate and not in a group. ;-) When opening I get a lot of script-issues...see screenshot. It says script is not answering and might be damaged. Some 3D-Elements look weird now - e.g. screenshot Wish Change the opengl at least to 3.0!!! 2.1 feels like doom or duke nukem back in 1998 :-/ This is not state of the art and customers are very unhappy with the quality atm. FYI: MacBook Pro Late2013 i7 2,3Ghz // 16GB Ram // Firefox latest So is there anything I did wrong? Is there anything I could help? I really think this is a great feature and I want it to be better! All the best from germany, volker
  23. It appears that the export options for COLLADA files increased in VW2017; however I cannot seem to get a file to actually export. I have tried multiple options in many different files. I have attached one here for reference. Any ideas, workarounds, or fixes? Senecio.vwx
  24. Any advice over 'best' file format to use to bring objects (furniture and sanitaryware in this particular case) into VW2017. Of the manufacturers I'd like to use, Revit families are most popular, & skp, and some ifc's. I created some from a manufacturer's 3d dwg's (Morgan furniture), looked perfect but there was something in them that VW just didn't seem to like. Successful methodologies/ hints/ tips for creating good quality VW models from manufacturer's models most effectively (ie. with minimum of re-modelling & time) from other file formats would be appreciated.
  25. ADDED: Scroll down to see a video of this issue in action I have a number of booms in my plot. These are shown on my lighting plot layer with viewports created by the Create Plot and Model Views tool. I have the definition and model layers for all of the booms hidden. This setup correctly shows the boom in plan view with instrument symbols. When I pan around the document however (holding down [Space] and dragging with the mouse), the viewports boom viewports all suddenly show the 3D model of their respective booms, including the full width of the pipe and the 3D mesh for the instrument model. If I change the visibility of any non-active layer, the viewports pop back to the (correct) plan view, even if the layer whose visibility I changed has nothing to do with booms (such as my softgoods layer). Toggling the active layer's visibility does not fix the rendering. I assume that this is a bug of some form? If not, what am I doing to cause this behaviour? Edit: I can cause a similar behaviour as well: If I edit the definition layer for one of the booms, then hit the Previous View button to go back, all my default layers get shown (such as lighting, softgoods, venue, notes), however only the selected layer (lighting) is shown on screen. If I toggle the visibility of any other layer, all of the missing layers snap back into being shown.
