  1. Hi all, I've been trying to troubleshoot a file that a friend sent over. The task is to export a lighting plot which has been drawn in Vectorworks into DWG with all the 3D Spotlight objects in its proper 3D space when being opened in AutoCAD. The lighting plot includes lighting trusses that are at an angle, so Design Layer Viewports have been used to properly display the angled trusses in 3D. I have discovered that once hybrid symbols are being sent into DLVP I am unable to export the 3D objects to DWG properly. The DLVP objects that are exported are in its angled orientation but only with the 2D elements exported and not the 3D elements. The lighting truss and lighting fixtures that are not sent into DLVP - i.e. those that are in its "normal" horizontal orientation remains exported as expected. To demonstrate, I have created a VWX test file with Spotlight 3D objects and exported it to DWG. Attached is the 3D test VWX file, another VWX file with the DWG reimported back in, as well as a couple of snapshots with the export settings. In the snapshots, the truss with its angled orientation is on the left, while the right is the truss with its normal orientation. Possible (serious) bug, or am I doing something wrong? 2. Hi all, I've used Vectorworks for many years, but only to do 2D work (plans, sections, construction drawings etc.) and am pretty confident at it (at least the bits that I use!). I would like to start using it for 3D. At the moment I use SketchUp to create a model, then Photoshop for post-processing. I would probably stick to Photoshop for some work, but make use of much better rendering within VW. I am hoping that there are people in the same position as me who have some advice, tips and resources to share, as I pretty much plan to teach myself, and would like this to be in as efficient a way as possible. Are there things you always wished you knew? Have you found any amazing blog posts or tutorials? Are there libraries of textures or objects that you'd recommend? All advice would be appreciated - I have a good project to learn on, and excited to get started! Thanks! Fi
  3. Is it possible to influence the order of Layers and classes when exporting 3D PDF? I have an order of Layers 01, 02, 03, etc... and I want them to be exported in that order as a 3D PDF and stay in that order when opening my PDF viewer. Is this possible? Right now they stay in a disorganised order. Thank you!
  4. Why is it that Hardscapes do not allow for alignment of Render Textures in similar ways to other solid objects (i.e. extrudes and floors). The entire Render Tab disappears when using Hardscape Objects. This is not good and should be fixed ASAP.
  5. Hey everyone, thanks in advance for your consideration. I have been using VectorWorks for about 2.5 years (Im using VectorWorks 2016 SP6 for Mac) (I have attached a specs list of my Mac in the attachments ) I am trying to do a 3d Perspective View of a room, it has Wall, Door and Window objects along with some furniture items imported as sketch-up objects. It works all-right if i view it in wire-frame mode, but when i go to OpenGl (occasionally) or Final quality (always) it gets garbled and doesn't produce a correct image. For some reason, shaded and other polygons modes are working fine as well. Im only facing issues with Final Quality and Open Gl modes. Please let me know if i am doing something wrong or should check some setting, (My 3d visualising setting is set to maximum : VectorWorks>Preferences>3d Rotation>Detailed) I have worked on a similar project last month with lots of sketch-up objects and not faced any issues. (I am adding an image of this file as well) Thanks for helping ! 3d-Rahul_sir.vwx
  6. I am trying to create a drawing to replicate a scenic tile that my boss wants to use. Below is a picture of the tile. It is essentially a 3" raised curve on a 2' square. I have been trying to figure out how to draw this for the last hour and I decided to ask if anyone had any tips on here. I just wish that multiple extrude worked with arcs. If anyone knows how to draw this, any help would be useful.
  7. Hi, I have this single layer wall (100 mm). The wall has its color, fill etc. attributes from a class. In this class, I have drawn my own tile, as I use as the fill. This works great when I do a section view in the wall and looking from the front. So far so good. But now I want to have a section view looking from the top, and in this section I dont want the same fill in the wall. Is there a way to have 2 different fills for a wall, maybe controlled by two different classes or maybe something else.
  8. Hi, Is it possible to have a 3D brick texture on walls? so the brick is sticking 2 cm out of the wall.
  9. Hi, Is it possible to give a wall different colors/textures on the same component? I have a 10 meter long wall, that i like to give 3 different colors. the first 2 meter in red, 2 m eter in green and 6 m in blue. Is this possible on the same wall?
  10. Hi, "This is a repost from ealier. I didnt get any answers, so i thought to try again" I have this floor made of following layers, Sand, concrete and tiles. The two first layers is just flat and wall to wall. But the tile layer has to have a virtical edge. In my test file, did I use the slab tool with the three layers, and afterwards did I make a 3D object, added that to the slab and so on. My problem is, that the top layer (tile layer) dosent follow the wall anymore. So is there a way to make the little edge, and still keep the auto-bound to the the wall? I do also need to have a drain in the floor (like in the file) I have attached a file, with my example. Test.vwx
  11. Hi, I have a question regarding wall stacking. (I am new to vectorworks, so maybe is it stupid) I have this two walls on top of eat other. The walls has two different wall styles and are on two different layers. The top layer has a elevation, that matches the height of the lower wall. The question is, when i edit the value of the top wall length, it changes to the correct length. But if I drag in the wall to get it longer, it removes the lower wall? So I can change the upper walls length by value, but not by dragging. How can this be, and what can I do to avoid this? See my attached test file Test_.vwx
  12. Morning all! I'm having some issue with a design layer viewport being cut off when I engage the 3D flyover tool. I've attached (2) screen grabs showing two different 3d views, and the point where my views are cut off. Any support would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  13. Hi, I have two different walls on top of each other. Is it possible to do so, when i move one of them, the other follow.
  14. I'm looking for any help (tools, tips, suggested videos) in drawing this in its 3d form as accurately as possible: ... any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  15. I have been trying to curve a complicated extruded object by using the 3D deform tool, however, when I try to use it the tool won't even acknowledge the object, but it will with more simple shapes. Is there a reason why this is and is there a way I can get it to respond to my complicated extrude or is there at least another method I could use to curve my object? I've attached an image of what object I'm trying to curve.
  16. I'm trying you loft a surface with more than 3 sides. I've extracted NURBS curves from a solid shape that is too complex to take the texture I need. How would you suggest creating a loft surface with more than 3 sides? The shape I'm trying to construct is a car body, so the NURBS curves are the wheel well, the trunk of the car, door frames etc. This image shows the curves I'm using.
  17. A user has asked me how to set the height of the 'First Person' when in the Web View models exported by Vectorworks 2018. There are some rafters he can't get past in a loft of some sort. When exported from 2017 the menu icon (3 horizontal bars) enables one to set the height but this isn't available in 2018. The starting position/height of the initial view doesn't affect the First Person height, because as soon as you drop that little man down, he assumes a pre-determined height of between 1.5 & 1.8 meters. Can we please bring back the 'Set Height' controls?
  18. I have modeled and converted to a solid addition, and when I try taper solid, the tool fails. Why? File attached. Thanks tapersolid_notworking.vwx
  19. Hello- I'm trying to add multiple textures to a single solid object. I have an extruded rectangular shape that's serving as a "ground" covered in a sand texture. There is a point where it runs up against a wall that has its own texture and I would like to add a tall grass where the two meet. could someone help with adding both textures to the "ground"
  20. Wonder if someone could help with a DWG Export problem i am using Spotlight and trying to export my drawing in to a 3D DWG. i'm sure it is some settings i am missing, however when i export, the Truss and Lighting Instrument symbols remain as 2d Symbols (but retain the 'Z' measurement). Un-ticking the Decompose 3D Symbols and Groups button successfully exports the lighting instruments as 3D, but still not the truss. however the DWG does not retain the 3D Orientation of the lighting instruments. ie - some fixtures are spun 90 degrees, to appear flat on the front face of the set. however the DWG ignores this are outs all 3d Orientation back to Zero. any help with this would be great.
  21. I have a long, very curvy path drawn in 2d in plan form, which I want to convert to a 3d polygon that I can apply as a pad modifier to an existing site model. However, it is not a flat path in terms of height - it has a crossfall in level and also varies in gradient along the length of the path. I had thought the best way for me to do this would be to convert both long edges of the path to 3d polyline, set the levels for each loci point and loft between the two lines... is this the most efficient workflow? I don't particularly want to have to set levels for each loci point - if there's a way I can set a few and ask vectorworks to interpolate that would be better, but I can't find any tool that might do this? Any comments / ideas?
  22. Some of us who've drafted cabinet elevations for, say 40 years, have a difficult time finding the efficiency in modeling cabinets to create interior elevations. At the moment, VW has several cabinet-model tools (not unlike the several stair tools) which can be confusing at best. Each has a different approach with inherent advantages/limits. Most offices either draw "realistic" cabinetry, or "schematic" cabinetry, which might offer some direction in choosing which VW tool to use. However all the VW tools offer far too much lifework for the "schematic" (one--line) documentation of cabinetry. Bottom line: if I can still draw it 2D much faster than modeling it 3D, what's the point of 3D cabinetry? Most projects for us have only minor interior elevation changes. So the up-front time to model Cabinets does not return time dividends. The new Custom Cabinet tool holds promise, but needs several tweaks to be useful. - More control over position and orientation of pills - door swing lines for Hidden Line render mode - adding a shelf (shorter depth) or a clothes Rod
  23. Hello, Quickly jumping into 2018 - looking at the new multiple view panes. I found that I am unable to view anything in 3D or different views. Even with no multiple view panes, standard views are greyed out. Is this a new restriction for the student version? Thanks!
  24. Hi VW Inc., by any chance...will you update that OpenGL sometime? Still limited to 8... eight! lights. No reflections... check this out: When can we expect an update? Hope 2 hear some good news on this one ;-) Cheers!
  25. Hi all, Recently observing some weird occurrences on my resource browser - if you look at the attachment, the 3D objects in my hybrid symbol are appearing on my 2D thumbnails. Any idea if there are some settings that I might have accidentally tweaked that causes such a display? As you can see, I have already "Set Thumbnail View" to "Top/Plan" I am currently on VWX2017 Spotlight SP3 as I have a few ongoing projects and would prefer not to risk upgrading to SP4 midway, but this thumbnail is beginning to irritate - enough for me to post this here. Happy weekend, Gabriel
