  1. Hi All, I'm currently drawing a lovely old theatre in Melbourne called the Palais Theatre. A picture below shows the rather extravagant proscenium which in particular is framed by a set of rotated columns which arc into the ceiling. Drawing these as Extrude Along Path as basic circular geometry and a cute texture applied is fairly straight forward, and fine for this project's context, however it does beg the question; How would we do this as an actual solid? Find the attached example file for discussion. Save views are included to look at the individual components however as an overview; Extrude Along Path (shown in two examples) is the overall end goal however EAP doesn't have a 'Twist' component. Twisted Columns could be created, as shown in the two examples, by Deforming an existing shape or using a Pitched Sweep function. Notably there are probably further thoughts on a loft between two twisted rails, or a Duplicate Along Path with No Rails Loft Objects following. I'm interested if anyone has any super creative and/or obvious easy ways I've overlooked. Hope you're all well. J 231212 - Twist Along Path Challange.vwx
  2. Hi All, Hope this is in the right section, I am trying to create a working 3D model of an usual stage. I've got the .dwg files of the various 2D sections and elevations, but I am struggling with what workflow to take to model the pillars. Please see attached screen shots. As you can see they start from a single base at the stage level, but then fork out and an angle to two separate places in the roof. I've got the straight, single sections but cannot seem to work out what tool or modelling workflow to build the fork sections correctly in VW. Thanks in advance for any tips or suggested workflows to try. Screenshots are from the various 2D .dwgs in my VW project.
  3. With VW 2022 it's great that we are able to texture individual faces. However I'm missing the possibility to split a face so I can only texture a part of the face. We do our concept design with SketchUp. There we can easily add lines to split the face and paint those new faces individual. After this action we hide the lines, giving the model a clean look. With VW the only way to split the face is by extruding. This gives two problems. First it results in lines that we don't want to see in the model. Second it makes editing the shape afterward more complex and result in unwanted depth of the mass were in reality everything is in the same plane. How we work now in SketchUp: Hope VW implement this function so we can say goodbye to SketchUp.
  4. I have a set of polygons that were imported as OBJs - so it comes in as a solid addition. Is there a way to fill the solid so it's not just a shell? It's essentially an empty pyramid. Trying to avoid remodeling as I have a ton of these objects that need to be turned into filled solids.
  5. I've done this a few times now and I'm looking for best practices / a faster solve. I got this DXF from the manufacturer: I then go through and delete all the junk I don't care about: I then do that in a fine tuned way trying to delete all the artifact junk from the DXF: Then I pick a surface as my base extrude and use the command "Combine Into Surface" and extrude it to the depth that I want: Then I rinse and repeat for all the other blocks and then combine at the end. Is there a faster / smarter way to do this?
  6. Hi, I am looking for a laptop (to work from home) that can handle vectorworks architect as I use it for rendering and 3D modelling. Can anyone suggest any laptops that have a suitable specification to do the job which are under £1000? Thanks in advance, Sam
  7. I'm trying to reshape a generic solid - is that possible? Won't even let me select points.
  8. Currently I'm trying to figure out ways to modify the sweep I just created. I want to trim/cut a section of it off. However, if I convert the sweep to anything such as a solid, the sweep turns into a filled solid. How can I convert a sweep into a surface and thus trim the section off from the new surface?
  9. If you thought Vectorworks was just 2D, it’s time to take a look at our 3D modeling capabilities.
  10. I'm trying you loft a surface with more than 3 sides. I've extracted NURBS curves from a solid shape that is too complex to take the texture I need. How would you suggest creating a loft surface with more than 3 sides? The shape I'm trying to construct is a car body, so the NURBS curves are the wheel well, the trunk of the car, door frames etc. This image shows the curves I'm using.
  11. I have modeled and converted to a solid addition, and when I try taper solid, the tool fails. Why? File attached. Thanks tapersolid_notworking.vwx
  12. Can someone kindly explain to me why a 3d symbol would change its insertion orientation based on the view being used when the symbol is inserted? I've attached a video showing the same 3d symbol being inserted incorrectly when placed in the drawing from a front view, and correctly (rotated 90 degrees about the x axis) when inserted from an isometric view. This feels like a bug to me, but I'm sure there's more to it than that. Thanks! Joel symbol_orientation_change.mov
  13. Hi everyone, wish you all a happy new year and plenty of rewarding projects to all. Here is my question, I have seen these beautiful shoes in NY and I was wandering how to model such freeforms. I don't have much experience with other than architecture wall, windows etc.. but would like to move on to beign able to do that. ANy suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Best CF
