  1. Kool Aid, please keep your snide judgmental comments to yourself. What a terrible attitude to think you know what's best for me or my business.

The reason I didn't upgrade last year was because I was very busy and in the middle of projects. I really didn't feel that I had the time to move all my projects into a new version of VectorWorks and to learn the new features.

While I am extremely grateful that I still have projects now, they aren't as large or as numerous. This is a good time to invest in a new version and learn all the the features.

There are quite a few new projects coming up soon (thankfully the economy is recovering - keeping my fingers crossed).

Maybe this isn't a good enough reason for you or your business, but it was for mine.

  2. I'm glad we are all on the same page! I feel much better now. :)

I just wanted to clarify because there seems to be confusion about what I said (not just from you). The reason they allow the free upgrade within 30 days is to AVOID the headache of dealing with complaints and returns. Thus, there was never any need to return the interim upgrade.

  3. Sorry, the response was meant for IanH, not you Brudgers. He first asked me if I was sure about the upgrade offer. After I explained that offer, he asked me if that was wishful thinking or if it was fact. He then went on and on about how the return situation wouldn't work and how it doesn't make sense for the company to do that.

    *roll eyes*

The way it would work is that you upgrade to VW2009. Then you upgrade to VW2010 when it comes out and return VW2009 before the 30 days are up. You have effectively only paid for a single upgrade. That is why they do this offer - to avoid the complaints, returns and headache.

  4. I think it has to do with their 30-day return policy.

If I buy 2009 and within 30 days they come out with 2010, I could just pay the single upgrade price to 2010 and then return 2009. So they do this rather than deal with all the headaches and returns. You can't promise a 30 day money back guaranty and then change the terms of it after the purchase.

I think it is just a weird situation when 2010 is going to come out in less than 30 days. And since they have this offer, it is safe to say that 2010 is coming out in less than 30 days.

  5. That's great news.

I'm thinking about purchasing the upgrade to VW2009 since it includes a free upgrade to VW2010 when it is released. I probably won't install it and just wait until VW2010 to do an actual upgrade.

I ordered Snow Leopard this week. Looking forward to trying it out.

  6. @ossccar

I don't do much work on my MacBook Air. It is too small to do meaningful drafting.

But, I could be on site measuring something and needing to move around walls or doors or sketch up something really quickly for refinement when I get back to the office. Or I could be in a meeting with a client and we need to see what a change would look like. That might include manipulation of 3D hidden line drawings (but not RenderWorks which I don't have).

Pat is right about the pitfalls of upgrading. However, I could really use that space on my hard disk. I also don't want to pay to upgrade to 2009 now either when 2010 is just around the corner. Since 2010 is Snow Leopard compatible, I will definitely be upgrading then.

I wasn't planning to upgrade immediately to Snow Leopard anyway, but I would like to upgrade in the next couple of months. I'd be grateful if you would post any issues you encounter running 2008 on Snow Leopard.

    Thanks so much!!!

  7. @ossccar: I would love to hear if you have any problems with v2008 with Snow Leopard.

I am running v2008 and wanted to put Snow Leopard on my MacBook Air to get 7 gb of space back. I do most of my work on my desktop, but if all the basic functions of v2008 will work on my MacBook Air, I would be so happy!

  8. Has there been any word about VectorWorks compatibility with Snow Leopard?

I'm really looking forward to upgrading when they release it, but I don't want it to adversely effect my work.

Right now I'm running 2008, but I suppose I would upgrade to 2009 if I needed to...

  9. Thank you so much for all of your help! Somehow that needs to be easier to do - this is set up from a programming/engineering standpoint instead of a user interface point of view.

But anyway, my mistake was that I was choosing a layer criteria and then specifying the sheet (why it is listed in the pull down menu, I have no idea). But scrolling down further showed me the layers, I choose that, and it was excluded from the count.

Everything is right in the world again. ahhh....

  10. michaelk was right. There were a couple of windows that did it too and it was related directly do a viewport I made on my site plan of the bottom floor.

I tried everything I could to add criteria to either pick the layers/viewports or to exclude layers/viewports but I couldn't get any of them to eliminate the double counted doors and windows.

Maybe I don't understand the difference between a sheet layer viewport and a design layer viewport. I have two site plans on my drawings because the building is a 3-story split level (5 floors), so I have a site plan where I put the design layer viewport (I assume) showing the roof, and a site plan with a design layer viewport (again an assumption) showing the bottom floor so the actual footprint is more obvious.

Perhaps this wasn't the best way to do things?

  11. Pat,

You always have the answers. I did it for my window schedule not one hour earlier, but I couldn't repeat it with my doors.

What would I ever do without you? That worked!

BUT I have run into a different problem now. I'm stumped.

I made a quantity column and defined it as =COUNT and put the Summarize Icon on the Mark column so I can group the same kind if windows and doors together with the quantity.

All the quantities are showing up correctly EXCEPT for 5 of the doors. In each of those cases, there is only 1 door, but it is showing 2. I have other doors listed with a quantity of 1 door so it isn't across all doors.

If I uncheck On Schedule in that door, the door completely disappears from the Door Schedule. When I recheck it, it comes back as two?!? WTF?!?

    Sorry. I'm frustrated. LOL

    Any tips?

  12. I think I've imported color palette into Vector Works before. Right now I have all the lines of Benjamin Moore imported except their latest one Affinity - which I use almost exclusively when specifying colors.

Anyway, I downloaded the two types of color palette files they provide: ACB for AutoCAD and ACO for Photoshop.

I can't figure out how to get either of those in a format that VectorWorks will recognize which I think is XML.

Anyone have any ideas? It would be extremely useful for when I prepare boards for Planning Reviews...

  13. Thank you very, very much! I had no idea that option was located there.

Turns out that the layer was selected, but the Viewport was not. I selected the Viewports that I wanted them to be on, and it worked!!!

    Thank you once again!

  14. I have VectorWorks 2008.

I used View>Create Section Viewport to create some building sections.

When I edit the viewport, I can see the section lines and references, but when I go to the sheet they aren't there.

The viewport has both the class and the layer of the sections lines set as visible.

What else could I possibly be doing wrong? How can I get these section lines to show up on my drawings?

    Thank you!

  15. Umm... hello - I wasn't asking anyone to highlight the shortcoming of VectorWorks. That is of no use for me at all.

I was simply asking for suggestions and help for what VectorWork can do, not what it should do.

Thank you to gmm18 and rDesign for your helpful suggestions.

As for the rest of you, if you have complaints about the software, please take it up with the software company directly. You want to complain - start your own topic.

  16. Just in case anyone looks at this topic, Pat replicated the same problem and found a temporary solution until this bug is fixed... at least we think it is a bug.

To consolidate the windows in the window schedule, you should divide by the cell with the =COUNT formula in it (i.e. /D4), then multiply by that cell (i.e. *D4) so the formula will look something like this:

    =(Window.OverallWidth)/D4*D4

Weird, but it works for now.
