  1. Heh, I was afraid this was the solution. But then again I have yet to actually use the autoschedule business. I've made a couple runs at it over the years but this proves to be one more reason to avoid it. The BIM dream continues to allude me. I'll take a clear drawing over that any day. Thanks for both your inputs.
  2. Is there a way to have the outside of the window indicated by the outside of the shim space? I'd like to be able to snap to the outside of the shim space for the purposes of dimensioning. Any help is greatly appreciated. -Mike
  3. Why does the CreatExtrudeAlongPath command only creates a collection of NURB surfaces instead of the "Extrude Along Path" object I am used to seeing in the object info pallette after I've used the extrude along path menu command? I guess the distinction here is that the later is a PIO while my object is simply a low level object created through some primitive vectorscript. Can someone please enlighten me on the finer points here? I'd like to create an extrude along path object instead of a collection of smaller nurb surfaces. I'm working on a Vectorscript that allows me to take a rectangle that indicates the overall size of a window frame and, without having to do an offset, take a manufacturer's frame profile and create a 3D object of a window. I did this for a while with the extrude along path command but I'm getting tired of compensating for the center offset. -Mike Cobb
  4. I would love to see vectorworks provide a more sophisticated way of manipulating the wall end caps. At this point there is no way to have a finish material wall component wrap around at the wall cap without overlaying a polygon (for example). For those of us who dimension to stud but draw finish material this is a little tedious to navigate at this point. Thanks, -Mike
  5. Can anyone tell me why sometimes when I do a hidden line rendering of an extruded circle (i.e. a cylinder)i t shows intermediate lines on the surface as if it was an extruded polygon instead of a cylinder? Sometimes it will just render the cylinder without showing any lines on the surface. I prefer this. Any tips on how to avoid the later? Any help is greatly appreciated. -Mike
  6. Is there anyway that using "window break with caps" can be used so that the cap matches the thickness of the wall lines. I keep getting a cap that is essentially half the width of the wall line thickness due to a fill associated with the window plug in's white fill. Any ideas? I'm trying to do some pretty diagrammatic windows and I just want the glazing and the sides of the window (at the caps) to match the wall line thickness.
  7. I'm having a hard time working the "part line style" on my window tool's "settings" . I'm on a g5 Imac running Vworks 12.5. I adjust the settings of the various parts and "use part line settings" is checked in the object info palette. Any ideas? Help! Michael Cobb
  8. After talking with Technical Suport it appears that there is no way to set the margins on the borders before generating the borders on all the sheets with the Create Standard Viewports command. I would like to have a 1.5" margin on the left and a half inch margin everywhere else. This works with the binding of a standard set of architectural documents and I could really use this functionality. It appears that one needs to adjust all the margins individually on a sheet by sheet basis to get this 1.5" margin on the left side. Highly tedious. Is there anyway that the next release of Vectorworks could allow you to adjust the border margins either in the Document Setup command or the Create Standard Viewports command? Or am I missing something? Any help is appreciated.

  10. In the past I've had some real problems with creating survey symbols in construction doc files. I had this complicated CD file that was pretty much corrupted by my (uneducated?) attempt to creat a site model. Is there any harm/issues/problems in making a site model in another file and than importing it into my main file? Any help is appreciated.
  11. Yes! Tensions! That would be a great feature on the cubic spline tool. Is this possible or does this somehow violate the definition of a cubic spline. The bottom line is this: Is there a polyline curve that could have anchor points that the curve passes through AND at the same time have adjustable tensions on that curve. BTW, I am STOKED you guys now have arrowheads on your polylines. NICE WORK!!!!!!!
  12. I have had trouble when there are numerous CubicSpline points in a row too. If there is another point following these points that is not very "colinear" witht the others the cubic spline curve inevitably produces an anomalous bump at this transition. Its too bad. If there were control points like in illustrator this could be a useful tool but every time I have tried to produce a "prettier" curve with this polyline with anything more than a two or three point curve it it has summarily not done the job. Its a pity because this is the only curve that has the potential to produce a good looking site section line that ALSO has the accuracy for passing exactly through the control points pulled from the topo lines. If memory serves illustrator basically has two tangent vectors off of a control point (or is it called and anchor point). The magnitude and direction of these vectors is how one controls the shape of the curve. Any possiblity of there being something like this. For those of us still drawing our elevations and section this could be a VERY useful time-honored (dare I say this term in the brave new world of software developement?) tool. Any chance of seeing this in the future?
  13. Hey that helps a lot. Thanks for dealing with this Tom.
  14. I THINK this is in effect what I wound up doing. This is in essence what is described in the fundamentals manual on 14-27 except I scavanged parts from the 00_Arch_Sheets.mcd file. Am I correct in assuming that by doing it this way the text is already linked to a record? I should point out that instead of placing the scavenged symbol into the Drawing Border -Title Blocks folder I simply imported the Arch D symbol in its modifed form via the resource browser from the 00_Arch_Sheets.mcd file. This seems to work okay. Issue Manager treats it like an old friend. I hope I haven't screwed that up. For someone with a design series manual who has been reading about custom sheets it is hard to make sense of whether one should approach the sheet graphics (for lack of a better word) from either A) a Drawing Border approach as described on 14-27 of the fundamentals manual or B) a Sheet Symbol approach as described on A-5 of the design manual. Any guidance on what is recommended for architects (Drawing Border vs. Custom Sheet Symbol) is appreciated. There was a time with VW11 when modifiying sheet symbols and working with the issue manager is how I tried to do my work and i'm having a hard time letting go. The sentence on A-5 of the design manual that reads: "They [sheet symbols] are accessed automatically by the DOCUMENT SETUP commmand, which scales the symbols as necessary for the drawing scales in your file." strikes me as untrue at this point. Is there something I'm not understanding? Thanks for the help thus far Robert and Tom. Much appreciated.
  15. Its probably a safe assumption I shouldn't have had to place those sheet symbols manually. Perhaps I should be asking where I should have selected the Arch D Sheet Symbol that is in the 00_Arch_Sheets.mcd. If I go to Document Setup Command initially I can't select a title block unless I choose a Drawing Border. If I choose no Drawing Border and if I choose any other option it places TWO elements on the page; the drawing border and the title block. But the title blocks upper left corner is centered in the middle of the page. Obviously this is not right. Sorry for all the posts but I feel like I'm getting close to the solution but I need a little help. Thanks in advance.
  16. Okay, so I ran Document Setup, Model Setup and Create Standard viewports. After this I placed I the arch D symbol on each sheet layer manually. I started to run Issue Manager and it actually looked like it was behaving itself but I couldn't help noticing the following remark on page 21-3 on the Vectorworks Design Series Manual that If the project was set up with the Create Standard Viewports command some information has been automatically entered. For some reason this isn't happening for me. When I go back to create standard viewports after placing the sheet sympols and/or running the issue manager the application crashes on me. Any help is appreciated. I want to be able to get started with this version but I'm having trouble getting off the ground with a serious document.
  17. What is a universal title block? I notice it isn't listed in either the fundamentals or design series manuals. After running Document Setup, Model Setup and Create Standard viewportse I tried to run issue manager and it asks me for this. I'm afraid I'm still struggling to undrestand this. Any advice?
  18. Was that last comment suppose to be helpful? I've been trying to adapt my title blocks also but I'm finding a clear description of how to assemble a document is not easily found in the manual. I have modified the Arch D title block symbol in the 00_Arch_Sheets.mcd file but getting this symbol to manifest itself in my document is proving to be a relatively tedious process. After running Document Setup, Model Setup and Create Standard viewports I can't seem to get that symbol to show up without importing it in my file and placing individual on the sheet layers after they have been created. Any help is appreciated. I took the time to tweak the 00_Arch_Sheets.mcd as described in A-5 of the Design Series manual and I'd like to get this to work.
  19. Can anyone tell me why I don't get notified of replies to my posts even though my settings in my profile call out the correct email address? Maybe its my internet service provider?
  20. I have an old vworks file that has been brought into Vworks 12 and the plug in objects have been updated. When I turn on the sill class for the floor plan the sills appear appear as thick as the walls. When I turn the sill class off I get the sill lines to match what I've called out in my window settings (a thinner line). Unfortunately this also eliminates all the leaf and swing lines in the doors. Any idea how I might be able to get my line weights to behave?
  21. I have to second Eichel's feelings about mistakes. They have been the one constant source of enlightenment. It's not until you really want to do something and face a surmountable road block that a lesson gets driven home. The task manager is a real lesson into how vectorworks works.
  22. I trying to use it right now. It has always seemed like if you really want to use task manager and not have your drawings look like an unfortunate collision between a database and a graphic design idea you have to get somewhat savvy about how to tweak sheet symbols and the like. This is a project that really has beeen going on for years with me as a sidebat to my architectural practice. Still not there. I desperately want to realize the dream but its slow going. Wish me luck. -Mike
  23. Thanks for the new menu item Robert! I haven't used it yet but I'm looking forward to the day I do my next window or door schedule. -Mike
  24. Is there a means of doing a global change to the leaf, and swing line thickness of all the door plug in objects that are already installed in walls? More generally, is there a means of selecting all of a certain plug in object in the walls (doors or windows) and altering multiple/all instances of that object at once. Changing a global head height or jamb width of window for instance. Do we just have to go through and change this on a case by case basis once we have inserted the object into the wall. Any help and or guidance is appreciated.
