  1. I'm trying to set a project in a manner that is recommended by NNA and other sources I've studied. Currently project is half-done, class naming is chaos and so does the symbol naming. So far I've succeeded to use WR for creating project files from which to print out final print outs.

Now I want to set a mother resource file with door, window symbols, wall styles and may be other stuff and also set Class Naming standards for this project (appropriate class names already assigned to resources). So, I make a class named AR-WINDOWS-WINDOWS and a class named AR-WINDOWS-SYMBOLS. Then I import window symbol (named"W01") from an existing project file, edit it assign the window object itself to class AR-WINDOWS-SYMBOLS and set ID Label class to AR-WINDOWS-SYMBOLS. No other class assignments.

Then I reference my revised symbol W01 into a project file, replace existing symbol definition and - there comes 3 new classes, nevertheless I created only 2:

    AR-WINDOWS

    AR-WINDOWS-SYMBOLS

    AR-WINDOWS-WINDOWS

    Why there arrives class AR-WINDOWS?

I deleted this class from both files. After that I tried to do same with window W02. Only 2 classes arrives. If I edit symbol W01 in mother file and clock OK, the class AR-WINDOW arrives. I checked every field of that window object and there's no such place where some element would be set to class AR-WINDOWS.

When creating classes at first I called the class "AR-WINDOWS". Later I discovered that I'll need more subclasses for windows and assigned the window object to class AR-WINDOWS-WINDOWS. So, in the this window symbol's history there was a time it was assigned to a class AR-WINDOWS.

    Any hint?

I guess it would have been faster for me to delete this symbol and create brand new, but I want to know is this a bug or I was doing something wrong.

ps. I Did edit this symbol and replaced the existing window object with another one, and it solved my problem.

  2. Thanks for your ideas, Mike!

Though for church front people in my office found another option and we did it in other way.

Inner part is a wall that is 3D Reshaped (see attached file for idea) to have a "hole" in it. If we use empty symbols for "holes" then at the wall bottom there is a belt with thickness 0 which appears at rendering.

The upper part is walls+extrudes on the top.

For the church rear we are currently doing walls and roof faces. Both with glass textures and thickness of 26 mm. Now we are working on extrudes and 3D objects that would form necessary constructions... see attached picture of what we've got at the moment.

    Any comments are welcome!

Doesn't matter wether on specific issues mentioned here or any other ideas how to work out project like this.

  3. Another question.

When I create Workgroup Reference in a project file (the file to which all model files are referenced, SLs with appropriate Viewports, Drawing Borders, worksheets, etc. created), the objects in referenced DL happen to appear far from page boundary. Referencing different files makes them appear in different directions and distances from shown age boundary.

This is confusing. Any idea why is this happening?

  4. Mike, thanks for your responce! It's very great but I'm not quite sure I can follow.

    - If walls are stepped, how will they look in plan view? (Like few different walls placed besides?)

    - What kind of symbol placed in wall would cut emty space in it? Properly formed extrude?

    - What exactly do you mean with "Windows with custom hybrid symbols." What are those custom hybrid symbols?

I'll give a try and will see what I can do with methods you suggested.

  5. Picture ch-front.

    1. How would you make such front wall? The only way I can think is some kinf of alchemy with walls and extrudes.

    2. With what objects/tools would you make this kind of front stairs? I've done it with floor objects.

    Picture ch_back.

    3. How would you make such kind of glass construction?

Window walls? Roof face with glass texture? Extrudes?

Any hint on any of these questions will be greatly appreciated.

  6. I have run a copy of 2009 on my G4, 1Ghz Powerbook. I have not done much so far, but it seems to run as well as 2008.

In some rendering tests, viewports in 2009 have rendered/updated 4 times faster in 2009 than in 2008. This is using the same file (or as minimally updated as possible) and the same hardware.

Pat, did you run rendering tests on your G4, 1Ghz Powerbook? How much RAM's got your Powerbook?

  7. Then you have to create simple worksheet without database. I think you can't list each type of window once with database.

Example from my practice. Windows are symbols, no prefix, label looks like "W-02".

    B4 cell is W-01.

    C4 is =COUNT(INSYMBOL & (L='1st_floor_plan') & (Window.IDLabel=$B4))

    D4 is =COUNT(INSYMBOL & (L='2nd_floor_plan') & (Window.IDLabel=$B4))

    E4 is =COUNT(INSYMBOL & (L='3rd_floor_plan') & (Window.IDLabel=$B4))

    F4 is =SUM(C4..E4)

    Hope this helps.

  8. How do I set preferences for Section Line? The one which is created with command Create Section Viewport?

In the dialog boxes during VP creation there isn't check-box "Text Both Ends". This checkbox is accessible only through OIP after creation. I've noticed I can set some preferences to Section Line with setting preferences to Section_Elevation Marker tool (Set Marker Styles did the trick), but some preferences doesn't seem to be same. In Section_Elevation Marker tool preferences "Text Both Ends" and "Text Auto-Rotate" are checked, but creating Section Line with Create Section Viewport command afterwards creates a Section Line without "Text Both Ends" and "Text Auto-Rotate" options being checked.

  9. Hold the space bar, choose a tool, when you release the space bar the previous tool will become active.

Thanks Ray, this is interesting. I don't see how to use it yet, bet the time will probably show.

Actually active becomes not previous tool but the tool which was active when I pressed space bar. I can use many different tools while holding space bar but when I release it active becomes the tool which was last active before pressing space bar.

  10. Just tried M5d's suggested method and came to other vision about detailing.

Create 1 DL for details. Doesn't matter what scale it is. Draw geometry there. It might be also 3D, include symbols, groups, etc. Then, create viewports, send them to appropriate SL and all text and dimensions add there - in VP. If you change scale of the VP, text size, dims and hatches change to look same size as previously. With this method, your geometry is stored in 1 place - DL.

  11. Tried to find topics related skylight and came upon this thread.

Not exactly what I was looking for but still very interesting. Never imagined the roof could be done this way. Thanks Peter!

  12. Is there any kind of viewer out there? I didn't find anything on Nemetschek website.

I'm looking for complete building projects to see how they are set up, what technologies are used etc. In Nemetscheck web site under section Bim/Projects there are 2 but they are VW2008 file version.

May be someone can share their project? Or give link if project is already shared?

  13. I have used AutoCAD for the last 15 years and I'm feeling stuck in the mud with it (I'm using version 2002 now and haven't seen the worth in upgrading).

When I had worked 6 months with AutoCAD the senior architect (owner) asked to another architect who was kind a AutoCAD guru in the office what new features comes with new version (then it was AutoCAD 2007) and is it worth to upgrade. The answer was that there are 2 nice new functions, but nothing much.

Now, after more than 2 year work experience with AutoCAD versions 2007-2009 and moving to CAD managers position I can tell you that if you use AutoCAD as a big, comfortable drawing-board there isn't any reason for you to upgrade to new version. I you think about software more just than a drawing-board, there are plenty functions, features, technologies worth to upgrade. Especially from 2002.

Regarding VectorWorks - it's just a different peace of software, at some point similar to AutoCAD Architecture. If you didn't find much luck with AutoCAD this might be an option - the interface is different, the logics are different, the bugs are different :)

If one thing didn't work something different might do.

  14. Pat, one more note about your script. If you get around to fixing this script you could fix this also.

The trick is with quotes. In a worksheet produced with the script the formula looks like 'Record Name.Field Name'. If I copy/paste it formula doesn't work. I have to remove quotes or enclose Record Name or/and Field Name if there are spaces.

    Janis

  15. Tried the Pat's script mentioned in link in Pat's post above.

I don't know how, but I did succeed to implement this script in my Workspace tools (so, maybe, at some point VectorWorks IS intuitive peace of software).

Thanks Pat! Truly nice peace of code.

On windows and doors this works excellent. If I try it on space object I get the worksheet with 84 entries in Cell Formula column but Display Name column is empty. Any idea why so?

  16. 1. Is it possible to set Database Header row cell to show sub-row value if all entries are exactly the same or if there's only entry?

For example, I have set criteria to database row to search only space with Space Number "01", 1 subrow drop out, in DB Header Row cell I type "=space.name", in 1 subrow cell appears "Main Entry" and in DB header row cell appears "1". I want to see "Main Entry" in DB Header Row cell as well. This is for referencing this cell later in a "dumb" spreadshet-like worksheet.

    2. Is it possible with worksheet functions get Space Name and Space Height? For getting area I wrote "=AREA((L='1.fl.pl.') & (PON='Space') & (space.number='01'))/10^6". This shows me the area of space on specific Layer with number '01'. Sweet. The same thing I can do with preimeter (function PERIM). Also sweet. But I'm out of luck trying to get Space Name and Space Height in similar manner. Is there some kind of workaround?

And this all is about making Room Finish schedules. To get pure room list and areas the Database Row works just fine.

    Thanks in advance!

  17. Only one person works with a file at a time for us. In cases when we must work more than 1 person with a file one person makes a copy and after he/she is done the new stuff is copied in place in the "original" file.

I've looked at Workgroup Referencing feature but don't see how it would do for us. I also would like to know how others are doing and if they are using Workgroup Referencing an how it works for them.
