  1. Hi guys Thanks for the replies. I have looked at the various options you have both outlined above. The door is still not showing the opening. I have set the angle in the 3D section. It is most likely that I do not have the door properly set in the wall. My doors (there are 4) all open out through the walls (kinda obvious) but the doors themselves are recessed away from the wall which I reckon is half the problem. Can you reference a door to a wall even if it does not form part of the wall? Does that make sense? The building is a very tricky one to draw but nearly there. I will have a look at your offers of training. thanks eamon
  2. Hi all I am not sure if I am in the right forum for this question. I am at the rendering stage of a 3D venue I am drawing. This is my first venture into this type of work etc. I am attaching a screen shot of my door. The red circular structure is a wall made from the wall tool. The door is purposely away from the wall but was created in the wall etc. I am wondering how to be able to look through the door and not see the wall in the opening etc? I have tried to remove solids but that did not work. WIthout redrawing the wall I am stumped. The render is Open GL. On another note; can anybody recommend any tutorials or guides for drawing in 3D & rendering. I am at the stage where I need to sit down with someone etc. Self thought to this point and looking for guidance. many thanks eamon
  3. Hi all I am in the process of attempting to draw a theatre in 3D. I am stuck at the seating banks. They are 3D "arcs". The whole space is based on a circle and is proving fun. I am unsure how to make a 3D polygon as an arc. I would be grateful if anybody had any hints or tips. thanks eamon

    3d pipes

Hi Peter Many thanks for the tip. It worked a treat. My pipes are in position. thanks again eamon

    3d pipes

Hi all I am 3Ding up a venue and some of the FOH positions are curved 48mm pipes. I have them in a 2D format (arc) and I am wanting them to be brought into the 3D aspect. my way (learned recently) is make a circle, extrude and then create a symbol and eventually make it a spotlight position etc. I am unsure as to what is the best way to make a 3D pipe. Never had to do it before hence the head scratching. How do people normally tackle this? cheers eamon
  6. Hi Grant Many thanks for the pointer's Sorry for the slow reply; the day job has kicked in! I have taken your idea's & tips on board. I am getting somewhere with the render but am a long way off being top of the class... Would you or anybody else understand how to render a gobo in renderworks? I have imported and placed a gobo texture and can see it but am unsure how to bring it into renderworks (if you can). I can get the blue backwash to render and then it disappear's to black!Tis being a bit fun so far. I am just wondering what would be the method to have the gobo's cut through etc. many thanks eamon
  7. HI Grant Many thanks for the pointer's. To clarify, I have to place a renderworks symbol for every light I wish to render with? I was figuring this to be the case but it seems a case of double work load etc One of the things that was confusing me was how to achieve colour's in the Lee & Rosco gel ranges or can you? I know you can do some shaping with the shutter option within spotlight but how do you transfer this to renderworks? As for the gobo texture's, I have never managed to import them properly!! Is there any tips or tricks you have for accessing them. many thanks for the help. eamon
  8. hi all I am still trying to crack how to render w/VW 2012. I have drawn a fairly simple one truss plan on a stage. There are 6no pars & 6no mac entours. I wish to create a basic concert look ie 1 x blue back wash and the entours cutting through with gobo's and obviously haze. My problem is that should I doing this in spotlight or renderworks? The controls for the rendering of the spotlight symbols seem to be very different to those used by renderworks and this is leading to my confusion. I have read manuals and online guides but I cannot seem to figure this out. I eventually wish to submit this for a job proposal. How does one achieve a simple look? I can never seem to import gobo texture's. I have attempted over the years and given up each time. Can anybody give me a heads up with what to do? I just do not know to proceed. The file is below. Please note, I am not looking for somebody to do my job but I am attaching it to give an idea of the scale and to help with any pointers etc. many thanks eamon
  9. Hi all I am trying to export a DWG of a vectorworks spotlight plan. Everytime I try to export the file, the program crashes and I have to re-start it. The file is local and on my desktop. I am running the latest version of VW 2012 spotlight w/renderworks. The scale is set 1:1 and I have 3no. viewports created. Does anybody have any idea's? thanks eamon
  10. Hi Thomas Many thanks for the help. Sorry for the late reply. I have been in tech and having the fun! cheers eamon
  11. Hi all I am starting to generate a simple enough 3D representation of a generic lighting plan to give upcoming venues more information etc. Within this lighting plan, I am incorporating masking & set elements (1no. bench). I am trying to figure out how to draw floor lanterns & booms. I can not seem to rotate the units into the proper orientation and unsure how what is the best way to draw a boom for the 3D approach. I have managed to draw the overhead plot in 3D but I am having the same problem with the orientation of the lanterns in 3D. I am also wondering how people draw the circular pipe in 3D. I am using the 2D polygon & converting it to a spotlight position symbol. How do you make a 3D pipe aka a standard bar. I am just wondering if people have any tips or tricks. many thanks eamon
  12. Hi Pat Many thanks for that. You were correct re the workspace. I had found the walls palette but was in the fundamentals workspace. Many thanks for sorting that out. cheers eamon
  13. Hi all I am curious to know if it is possible to use the door & window tools within spotlight. I am drawing a ground plan for a set and want to insert the aforementioned items and use their properties. I am looking to 3D up the ground plan and make my first attempt at rendering etc. I just cant seem to find these tools. Are they only available in Architectural etc? What do people do to work around? many thanks eamon
  14. Just an update. While the guide class is a good idea, I am afraid to say it did not work. It looks like I will have to move to polygons to resolve this problem. cheers eamon
  15. Thanks for the pointers. Will look at the guide class idea. never thought of that. Has anybody experienced this before? It is just a preference setting? thanks eamon
  16. Hi all I am trying to draw some basic walls. to eventually create a 3d space. It is a theatre. I am currently using the wall tool. When I go back to check the measurements, I find the wall has changed length by different margins ie if it was drawn at 5010mm, it could change to 5065mm or similiar when I recheck it. I am finding this very frustrating to say the least. Has anybody any suggestions to probably very simple problem?? thanks eamon

    Purple Lines??

I have only ever been on VW 11.1. I have only seen it on this platform eamon

    Purple Lines??

Hi I have experienced this problem before. It is very frustrating as there is not obvious cause to it. There is a way to get rid of the dashed purple lines. I use a mac. Go to Preferences, then click(de-select) the Snap to Loci option. Hey presto, your lines will disappear! I found this work around trawling the internet on some obscure sites. I am of the assumption this works accross in PC land. I do not know what causes this but have just found a solution. best of luck with it eamon
