  1. Given that the user who asked the question is based in Munich I bet my Vectorworks licence that changing the regional setting to use points as the decimal marker instead of commas will resolve the problem. I have tested it back and forward and with commas (German setting) the values behind the decimal markers are lost when using the =('Space'.'Area') command.
  2. @HAUSrucker: decimal marker issue for ('space'.'area') calculation I had exactly the same issue. Then I realized that the regional settings on my computer are set to Germany (if you are using Windows this is in the control panel>regional and language options). The issue seems to be that in UK and USA numbers are stored as in the format 123,456,789.00, whereas Germany and some other countries are using the format 123.456.789,00. This means the decimal marker in UK/USA is .(point) whereas in other countries it is a ,(comma). The regional setting seems to have an effect on the calculations of the Vectorworks worksheets, as if Vectorworks doesn't recognize anything behind a comma. After changing my regional setting to UK every newly created space in Vectorworks came up with a .(point) and best of all the =('Space'.'Area') works and also simple =sum() calculations are working again. I am not sure whether this will solve your problem, but given your user name it sounds as if you are based in a German speaking country and it might well be the same issue.
  3. Hi My firm has a mixture of E series (standalone for mobile workers) and C series (network licenses for use on office workstations) licenses. When I first took delivery of the installation media the distributor had only the E series available and, as I was under pressure to get a couple of my guys going on 2011, I installed the software on a couple of the office workstations using the E series media and standalone E series license numbers. I am now trying to reset the workstations' serial to use the network licence. Can anyone confirm whether I have to completely uninstall the software and re-install it using the B series media I now have or whether I can simply alter the "User Serial Number" value in the registry (win xp)? Simply inputting the network serial number (under a separate user ID) just returns the following error: "The serial number is invalid. Please carefully re-enter the number" Also I understand that the E series number originally used will be locked out by this machine for 90 days - can anyone confirm whether that's from the last time the software was used or if it is in 90 day increments from installation. Thanks
  4. I had the same issue and a friend of mine solved it for me like this: The solution requires that you create the image prop from your own image file, create an alpha channel in Photoshop and save the image as a tif with alpha channel before importing it as an image prop into Vectorworks: Use an alpha channel in the image that you?ll base the prop on in photoshop ? and instead of having ?background? black and ?tree? white, have the background black and the tree a shade of grey. The lightness of the grey will later determine the transparency: if the 'tree' alpha channel is 100% white, the tree prop will not be transparent, if the 'tree' alpha channel is 50% white, the tree prop will be 50% transparent. For architectural 'see through trees' the grey should probably be 75-90% white, i.e. 10-25% grey. When you import the image as an image prop (it will have to be saved with its alpha channel intact, which is a tiff save-as option in photoshop) select ?use mask? and then ?alpha channel?.
  5. RE: panta rhei. I haven't seen any of your work so our ideas of ridiculous may differ. I still believe that the function of mapping onto terrain model doesn't work in VW/RW, i.e. you can apply a texture but RW doesn't render it, wheras it does render onto a 3D solid or 3D mesh. PS: whether I can use another platform or not is a matter of financial resources.
  6. Thanks Peter. I tried the draping surface previously, but it made the terrain model look like a table cloth (that's also the way the tool is described in the documentation as far as I can remember). I might try to use a very fine grid - although it may well be to complex to compute if VW doesn't let me create a 3D mesh of the terrain model. thanks for your input.
  7. Panta rhei: I have to disagree. It certainly depends what kind of texture you use to apply onto a terrain model. The benefit of it is that you could for example apply a 2D road layout as an image to a 3D model and update only the jpeg if changes. Whoever has tried to work with the 3D road tool in vectorworks will aprobably agree that it is a nightmare and not suitable for larger models. However when you are saying that 'textures can certainly be applied to a DTM' - have you done this succesfully before? I've described the process in my previous post but it doesn't seem to work. It is also not documented in the help files and as far as I can see it is just not working, at least not for complex terrain models. If you know how to apply a texture onto a DTM let me know. I'll promise to post the result and you can judge for yourself whther is looks funny or ridiculous. Attached are the top view of the 3D terrain model (6km square) as well as a jpeg texture applied onto the top view in photoshop.
  8. Hi there. I am a colleague of Maryhil Matt and I am working on the same problem. We are using VW2009 Architect with RenderWorks. With VW/RW2008 we have managed successfully to map a jpeg as a texture onto a terrain model, but only after converting it to a mesh. This reduces/negates the possibilities to adjust the terrain. Matching a jpeg accurately onto an object is a challenge but not impossible ? though the user interface could be vastly improved for this. It is also true that from groundlevel the aerial jpeg will look distorted, but for aerial views or flyover animations it is good enough (I've posted a sample image). With our current model we have the problem that the geometry of the terrain model is too complex to convert into a 3D mesh. It seems possible to apply a jpeg onto a terrain model via a texture on the render tab - however nothing really happens when I try this. Does anyone has any other ideas?
  9. Thanks for your response Pat - as far as I can see the centreline of the road IS the road so whatever class I put the centreline on, I will not be able to disconnect it from the road - hence it will always disappear when I switch off visibility of the class. I've solved the problem with the pads - the red outline of the pad is automatically put in a class Site-DTM-Modifier, which can be easily switched off. There seems to be no such class for the road centreline (?)
  10. Any experts for terrain modelling in VectorWorks ARCHITECT out there? I need advice on a rendering of roadways and pads within a terrain model (DTM). My problem: the road centreline (black) and the outline of pads (red) is always visible in the rendered image, in OpenGL as well as in Final Quality RenderWorks. This doesn't look any good on a presentation or animation. Does anyone know a way to switch off the visibility of these lines? I could not find anything in the VW documentation or the forum. PS: I had the same problem with previous VectorWorks versions. VectorWorks 2008 Dell Precision PWS 380 Pentium CPU 3.20GHz 2.00 GB RAM OS Windows XP Professional (2002 SP2)
