  1. Peter, the only light adjustment tool on the symbol is brightness (no "Edit Light" option). if i use spotlight's instrument insertion tool, i get the same result that Dave posted.
  2. That's the same problem i was having. the laptop i'm using is a macbook pro 08 with snow leopard. (not the one in my sig)
  3. Hi All, I'm trying to get a recessed light to shine onto a countertop. I've been successful so far, but can't seem to get them to shine brightly. i can adjust the brightness all day long, but it still seems really dim. When I insert the light as an instrument through spotlight, i can edit the light properties just like any other light and achieve the goal, but the light is not shining from the lamp, it's shining from the locus insertion point (when i tell it to draw the beam. I'd like to post a pic, but it's on another laptop that can't connect to the internet right now. is there something simple that i'm missing? Thanks!
  4. yep, found it on their site. Thanks!
  5. Thanks Kevin, that seemed to do the trick. where does one get distribution files? I found how I can insert them, but where do I obtain them? I'm about to try a google search, but you or someone else out there might have a better option. Thanks!
  6. Update: There's a roof structure as well. When I turned the roof structure on and re-rendered, it worked they way I wanted. there's no roof structure in the "good light" png. hmm.......
  7. Here's the file with the good light
  8. Here's the file with the good light.
  9. Hi All, I have to be doing something wrong. The first image file (good light.png) is what I want from the light. The second (bad light.png) is what I'm getting. The first image is from a file with just the light, the stage, and the person. The second image is from the file that contains everything, which I'd like to use for my renderings. I would think that I'm missing something, but nothing about the settings of any of the objects has changed, only there's alot more objects in the second image, though none of them are turned on. both images are FQRW. Also, the light in the image shown is a Source 4 Par. The beam drawn is an accurate representation of what the beam of a source 4 par looks like. The beam of light rendered, however, is round, whereas the light from a S4 Par is oblong, like the beam drawn. I;'ve checked all the beam angle settings in the OIP, and they match a S4 Par WFL. Is there a way to fix this issue? I'm also posting this in the Renderworks Forum. thanks!

  11. Thanks for the tip, it will help. The main annoyance factor was the name on the Visualization pallet. but, I just discovered that I can right click, select on document, and edit it to a name of my choosing. It stays with the numbers on the OIP, but in the VP it's the name I told it to be. useful work around, i guess.
  12. Hi all, I'm speccing out lighting for a stage renovation, and I'm trying to name each particular light for it's focus point. I clicked on the light, and in the "Data" tab of the OIP, i typed in a name, in this case "Light A". I repeated the process for the remaining lights on the truss. Then, I went into the Edit part of the pallet, focused it on the appropriate point (A). When i went back to the "Data" tab, the name i had given it was replaced with a number, as when I originally placed the light there. Does the name reset every time you change the focus point? sorry if i'm rehashing an old topic, but i didn't find a posting on my search for it. thanks!
  13. I've had this problem as well, but with no fix. no matter where I tried to save my jpeg or any other thing, as soon as I hit "save image file" it acted like it saved it, i.e. i saw a process bar fill up, but then dumped me back into the settings menu. It took a few phone calls to NNA and a re-install to correct the problem. But the cause was still a mystery....
  14. I would like a way to display object names entered in the Data tab of the Object info pallet when that object is snapped to, i.e. when you snap to a corner, VW would display "Point, Audio Box 1" or "Point: Floor/Wall" for an intersection or "Group: Stage Left Masking Flat" for groups. please?
  15. Hi all, I'm wondering if there's a way to have VW 2008 display an object's name (as entered in the Object info Pallett) when I mouse over it, i.e. when my cursor snaps to the corner, it would display "Point, Audio Box 1". I'm doing a 3D truck pack for a client and moving text around is a PITA, and making text 3D creates ginourmous file size and lag. I't not that big a deal to have the Data pane open, and move my eyes over there and read the name I typed in, but it seems that VW should be able to do this. Thanks! Jeff
  16. Hi All, I know this topic has been beat more than a dead horse, but my PC renders things incredibly slowly. (I put a simple set with a few lights and some brick texture, told it to render a bitmap at 300Dpi at Final Quality Renderworks. I came back 14 hours later and it was halfway done and not responding.) I'm looking for a PC that can render a whole lot faster. I've read all the memory error discussions and will upgrade to 2010 when it comes out. I'm looking at an Alienware PC. Anybody use one of these? I'd be getting the high end one, like this. http://www.alienware.com/customize/alx-x58-r2-desktop.aspx?SysCode=PC-ALX-X58-R2&SubCode=SKU-GAME But, before I drop $5400 on a computer, I'd like to ask if anyone is using this or another Alienware PC, and what their opinion is on it vs a mac or other PC. I figured since all we do is graphics processing once the model is built, a computer optimized for graphics processing would work best. THanks! Jeff
  17. Any retrofit for us 2008 users that won't upgrade until 2010?
  18. I write Gcode for my CNC using BobCAD software to a WinCNC post processor. it can open a DXF(text) file, but that's never how I do it. I export a DWG and do the rest with the BobCAD software. We do stuff for other people as well, and it's come in all forms (mcd, vwx, dwg, dxf).
  19. You could try doing the layout drawing in viewports and sheet layers. I draw just one 3D model, then create all kinds of viewports, depending on how I need to send it to the shop floor. so i just draw it once (3D) then do all the 2D dimensioning I need to in viewports on a sheet layer. This way you can just modify the 3D drawing and have all your 2D stuff change with it. sorry for the rambling format, but I'm waiting for paint to dry. HTH, Jeff
  20. I had this happening as well, with a wave image, not a wall. I found that rotating the texture about .1 degree cleared it up until my computer ran out of memory. Maybe you can try the same thing, depending on how laser accurate you want your textures. HTH
  21. Bob's unfold is neat. I used it to make a CNC program for a 8' diameter 4' high crown for PBS's Camelot special.
  22. Hi all, for those of us stuck in PC land, could we petition Microsoft to allow us to have more memory for VW? I've tried all the above rendering methods on a not too complex rendering, about 25 mb file using some reflective surfaces, and I had to drop my DPi to 72 to get it to render in a viewport on Arch C size paper(after completely shutting down my computer (which has 3gig RAM and runs XP) and going to lunch). I was using imported image files as textures on basic shapes. I could tell when my Pc was running out of memory because one or more of the textures would turn black. grrrrr.... Jeff
