    So far, you're right...dunno if you can tell from the image below, but it seems that the initial hip roof that the tool creates has the desired clipping but once you ask it to create a gable end, it doesn't know what to do...I'll keep looking for options and/or submit a bug/enhancement request.

  2. Hi All,


    Let’s look at a little more Working Plane magic.  First to invoke the WP, I use the shift key and the number 1.  I’m not sure where I learned that, but it works...in the video, that’s what I do to set the WP on the Ground Plane – just do Shift 1 and click in white space the WP will be set on the GP.

     The next sequence describes how you can set the Automatic Working Plane...the trick here is that you MUST select a 2D tool FIRST, then as you mouse over faces, you’ll get the AWP snapping to those faces. 

    The next sequence, I take those funny looking nodes and change the axis of the WP.  To do that, just click on the edge of the pink WP and you should get those nodes.  When you go back to Top/Plan view, the WP disappears. 

    A helpful modelling trick might be, if you need to return to some sort of wacky, off-axis plane, create a Saved View and that’ll let you return to that view.

Here's a bit about the Working Plane...you can invoke the WP by hitting Shift 1.  You can see it snaps to the various faces.  If you go to Top/Plan view and back again, it'll be gone until you hit Shift 1 again. It works kinda like the C-Plane in Rhino.  There's also the Ground Plane which is at Z=0 of the layer. You'll see it right at the beginning of the video over to the left.


    Some AutoCAD folks have had troubles with multiple Design Layers (that equate to their singular Model Space).  You can also go to Vectorworks HELP to discover more...  Oh yeah, there's something called  Unified View.  If you are modeling it should always be ON.  In fact, I don't ever have the icon showing so I don't accidently turn it off - it's left over from years ago, but some folks find a use for it...

    Just a quick note regarding this workflow.  Since the release of 2019 and the advent of the Data Tag tool, this issue may go away entirely as the Data Tag tool can be used in place of the Space Label.  The Data Tag can (and should) be used in Annotation space in your viewports and with a little customizing, can look exactly how you need/want it to as well as be located in the appropriate place(s).





  5. This doesn't really "clean up" anything, but you can turn it into a hybrid symbol so that you only see 2D linework in top/plan, front, side or rear view (and a "cut view" as well) if you have 2019, but the full 3D object in any other view.

  6. @Phileas, yep that's the way the Curtain Wall tool was programmed - to simulate how curtain walls are typically built (with the verticals running continuous and the horizontals broken by the verts...) no way I know to change that (although I have asked for a "Make Horizontals Continuous" button"


    Dunno if you'll get any joy from the Railing/Fence Tool??


    As a workaround, you may be able to do just verticals with the Curtain Wall tool and then go back and "place" horizontally modeled objects on the wall.

  7. The Structural Member tool should be located in the Building Shell toolset - it has some anomalies but if it's a simple system you're after, this might work for you.


    The Framing Member tool is located in the Detailing toolset - you'll need to set it up for steel shapes but for me, it's kind of the "old reliable"


    Pick your poison 🙂


    I DO wish we were a little more consistent throughout our tools...



  8. Here's what I found with steel shapes using the three options, Structural Member Tool, Framing Member Tool, Wide Flange - 3D.


    Seems if you use the Structural Member tool, you can adjust the scale, mapping, etc. of the texture right there in the OIP's Render tab.


    The Framing Member tool does not allow editing of the texture from the OIP


    The Wide Flange- 3D tool , the sttel shape (or whatever) has to be placed in a class for it to "take" a texture

    Check out Vectorworks Help, there's a section on editing...dunno if you can infer anything from that regarding building a custom one...I built one that gives the spot elevation for the top of a slab so it can't be too hard...


    I'll ask around and see if a video or tutorial has been made that specifically targets making custom tags.


    See the attached file, it might get you started...


    Got to the Resource Manager and edit the tag.  At the bottom choose "Edit Tag Layout" Select the "EL" and in the OIP, choose "Define Tag Field".  This is where the magic happens.  It's similar to "Link Text to Record"...  take a look at the "Data Source" and "Function" drop-downs...

Go to the particular window style in the RESOURCE MANAGER and EDIT it.  Under the ID Tag tab set the "Label" to the little slider icon which sets that particular field to "by instance".  Then close up the style editor.  Now go to the design layer and choose a window and you'll be able to change its tag separate from any other window as it is now set to "by Instance"  See attached screen shot


    Doors work the same way...

  11. Next - Window elevations - if you want your windows to be set by head height or sill height you're going to NOT want to have a Height value  - see attached  image where it says Height 2600 - that is going to ADD 2600 mm to the elevation that you have set at 2100.  Does that make sense?

  12. The way I see it there're at least three issues here - the muntins not showing, the sill not located correctly and the height is incorrect.


    This'll take me a bit of time to weed through...the first question regarding the muntins not showing, in your Custom Sash dialog, you need to check the box "Include Muntins" - see image (sorry, I changed the units to that archaic "feet and inches" but that shouldn't affect the muntins...).  And you need to check that box for EACH selected sash.  What's interesting is that you DO NOT get a preview in this dialog...sorry, I don't write the code, I just try to make it work...


    I'll work on the elevations next...

  13. Hi All,


    Here's what I've got regarding the wall framer.  I can get it to frame the studs in the stud "gallery" as you've described using the "Core" function in the wall style (this should ALWAYS be used or slabs won't respond correctly).  However, IF the trim function is used, the framer will frame to the OUTER extent of the trim (which is NOT what you want). Just turning the class off doesn't seem to do anything, you must turn the trim off in the OIP to get the framing tight around the window frame as it should be...

    Keep in mind the Wall Framer is quite an old tool
