window sill and glazing bar glitches

@Cadplan Architecture, typically in the States, casements and awnings open out, hoppers open in. In my sketch above, the sill is on the brick side of the wall, the casements are opening out. Wes

    Curtain Wall Tool

@Phileas, yep that's the way the Curtain Wall tool was programmed - to simulate how curtain walls are typically built (with the verticals running continuous and the horizontals broken by the verts...) no way I know to change that (although I have asked for a "Make Horizontals Continuous" button" Dunno if you'll get any joy from the Railing/Fence Tool?? As a workaround, you may be able to do just verticals with the Curtain Wall tool and then go back and "place" horizontally modeled objects on the wall. Wes

window sill and glazing bar glitches

@Cadplan Architecture, there's a file called "Window Sill test.vwx" in the post regarding sills. Hope that helps. Dunno if this is part of it but I DID set up the sill first BEFORE defining the custom sash's attributes. Wes

    Redering Textures on Structural steel

The Structural Member tool should be located in the Building Shell toolset - it has some anomalies but if it's a simple system you're after, this might work for you. The Framing Member tool is located in the Detailing toolset - you'll need to set it up for steel shapes but for me, it's kind of the "old reliable" Pick your poison 🙂 I DO wish we were a little more consistent throughout our tools... Redering Textures on Structural steel

Here's what I found with steel shapes using the three options, Structural Member Tool, Framing Member Tool, Wide Flange - 3D. Seems if you use the Structural Member tool, you can adjust the scale, mapping, etc. of the texture right there in the OIP's Render tab. The Framing Member tool does not allow editing of the texture from the OIP The Wide Flange- 3D tool , the sttel shape (or whatever) has to be placed in a class for it to "take" a texture Each one offers a "challenge"

    Data Tag Help

Hi Russ, Check out Vectorworks Help, there's a section on editing...dunno if you can infer anything from that regarding building a custom one...I built one that gives the spot elevation for the top of a slab so it can't be too hard... I'll ask around and see if a video or tutorial has been made that specifically targets making custom tags. See the attached file, it might get you started... Got to the Resource Manager and edit the tag. At the bottom choose "Edit Tag Layout" Select the "EL" and in the OIP, choose "Define Tag Field". This is where the magic happens. It's similar to "Link Text to Record"... take a look at the "Data Source" and "Function" drop-downs... Hope this helps Wes Spot Elevation for Slab.vwx

Door Window Style ID Tag Change

Go to the particular window style in the RESOURCE MANAGER and EDIT it. Under the ID Tag tab set the "Label" to the little slider icon which sets that particular field to "by instance". Then close up the style editor. Now go to the design layer and choose a window and you'll be able to change its tag separate from any other window as it is now set to "by Instance" See attached screen shot Doors work the same way...

window sill and glazing bar glitches

And finally...Window Sill - here's mine...it did NOT show in reverse...hmmmm. Maybe it has something to do with your Unstyled wall...I'll need to test further. I've also included a masonry sill with a soldier-course header...that's a little more involved but can be done Window sill test.vwx

window sill and glazing bar glitches

Next - Window elevations - if you want your windows to be set by head height or sill height you're going to NOT want to have a Height value - see attached image where it says Height 2600 - that is going to ADD 2600 mm to the elevation that you have set at 2100. Does that make sense? There is a getting started tutorial on our website I've also included a copy of your file so you can experiment. windows elevation test.vwx

window sill and glazing bar glitches

The way I see it there're at least three issues here - the muntins not showing, the sill not located correctly and the height is incorrect. This'll take me a bit of time to weed through...the first question regarding the muntins not showing, in your Custom Sash dialog, you need to check the box "Include Muntins" - see image (sorry, I changed the units to that archaic "feet and inches" but that shouldn't affect the muntins...). And you need to check that box for EACH selected sash. What's interesting is that you DO NOT get a preview in this dialog...sorry, I don't write the code, I just try to make it work... I'll work on the elevations next...

    framing model

Hi All, Here's what I've got regarding the wall framer. I can get it to frame the studs in the stud "gallery" as you've described using the "Core" function in the wall style (this should ALWAYS be used or slabs won't respond correctly). However, IF the trim function is used, the framer will frame to the OUTER extent of the trim (which is NOT what you want). Just turning the class off doesn't seem to do anything, you must turn the trim off in the OIP to get the framing tight around the window frame as it should be... Keep in mind the Wall Framer is quite an old tool Wes

    Viewport Resize?

Do you mean crop it or rescale it? Rescale is done in the OIP

    Elevation Linework Poor Quality!?

You +CAN+ use other render styles like you've done but you WILL have to increase the sheet layer's DPI settings...

    Elevation Linework Poor Quality!?

Typically, for views like sections and elevations, you should set the render mode to Hidden Line

    Wall Height?

@ CraigC, OK, go for it! Your choices in Vectorworks are Unstyled walls, Layer bound walls or Level bound walls... There's also a Getting Started webinar offered monthly that may serrve to clarify some of this... Wes

    Elevation Linework Poor Quality!?

I assume you made the elevation with the "Create Section Viewport" command (or the Clip Cube)? You can also bump the sheet layer's DPI up if you need to...usually the default is OK for line work.

    Substracting solids from walls

@ Phileas, Cool! yeah, the whole thing (pun intended) is a bit nervous...I don't really like to show it but sometimes it can work, particularly for things like reveals when they are important to a design. The cool thing is the whole wall hole thing can be made to go around a corner which is something other approaches can't do. Good luck! Wes

    Wall Height?

This might help you understand some of the "how to's" and "where for's" when it comes to walls. If you try to use a level bound wall style in a layer bound file, you'll run into problems (like your walls will "pancake") Model Set Up Trainer.pdf

Joining 3 walls with different styles

@ line weight, That's going to be a tough one....the lower wall will have to decide whether to join to the vertical or horizontal wall...dunno if it's possible to get the correct representation...it might be that you have to go with two walls for the lower one that are split down the middle??? Wes

Joining 3 walls with different styles

I can but I do end up with the bit in the red box....I've found that often times you need to take the thing apart, pulling the wall ends back and try again...not always exactly a linear process 🙂 Joined.vwx

    Substracting solids from walls

Hi All, Sorry for any confusion with the file. You DO need to bound the slab on all sides - I used Virtual walls in that example.. Here's the " 3D Wall Hole Component" method..It WILL take you a while to get your head around how to do it. Follow the instructions fairly carefully... Have some fun Wes Reveals.vwx RevealMaker Notes.docx

    Substracting solids from walls

You might also try something like this that uses the Wall Hole command...cool thing is that it'll go around corners where Wall Recesses/Projections get a bit weird at corners.
