Question, why when two walls are joined, such as a stud wall with gypsum board finish each side or one side only, do the framing lines not join? When dimensioning a wall I wish to link to the connection of the framing, not the drywall. Is it a setting or something else? And no, I do not want to only use walls without the drywall finish attached.

Jim, When a stair is standing alone then yes the landing has a guardrail, but when a stair is in a stair tower, with walls around the landing, the handrail and guardrail are not required and actually get in the way. Just look at a stair in a house, is there a handrail following the landing? Handrails are only required (USA Code)and useful to be on the flight of the stairs. A guardrail is required on any walking surface where the walking surface below it is 30" or more. This is a standard through out the US and I believe in other countries as well. The stair tool should have radio buttons to place guards and handrails on the flight and landing so the user can choose when to use them. Just saying to make the tool a bit more useful.

Hey Guys, If you're going to eliminate the custom stair in 2015, at least you could do is to make the stair tool not put hand rails or guardrails on landings. DUH!

Hi Jim, Thanks for responding. What I'm asking for with respect to landings, the "new" stair tool has no option to provide an angles landing, much like the custom stair tool. Because of this I rarely use the "new" stair tool, among many other limitations. the bottom tread shape is big, most residential stair in the US have a bullnose first tread and in high end housing fountain stairs are common. The reason I asked is there is a fancy stair tool and it becomes unusable because of limitations. Also stair landings are odd shaped apart from the standard rectangle with 45 degree angles and multiple landings as well. I know the custom stair tool is there for this but if you have a tool I'd like to use it, you know? Thanks again for your interest in my post. Just trying to give you guys a little boost to get your program moving in the right direction.

Do you think the next time you're working on the stair tool you can add angles to landings and rounded first treads of different widths. Kind of like all stairs are actually made. Thanks

Don't know if anyone else asked for this, but I would like roof slabs to have composite elements just as the floor slabs have. A roof is made of many components and to list and control each component would go a long way toward BIM and documentation.

Hey Neimechek, one thing, put a mullion control in the custom window tool. multiple windows have different numbers of mullion per pane. The mullion settings are not universal. Thanks for reading this

One thing to remember when inputting info in a so called BIM file, Think of how the industry deals with the process and only do what your discipline does and leave the rest to others down stream. Just because you can do it in the box sitting in front of you doesn't mean you should. Spinning your wheels trying to draw something you shouldn't do anyway just wastes time and money. There is a whole host of industries and people who deal with the "shop drawing" phase and you should respect their contribution to the whole project. Doing so expedites the project, defines responsibilities and makes the final out come better, with a little management there helps too. IMHO

I use an Intuos 3, old yet works great. Very comfortable, and yes I too misplace the pen.

JM One way I locate walls is to just put the wall where you think it should be, as many as you need, dimension the rooms and if it's wrong modify the dimension to move the wall. Of course you need a version like 13 to have that feature. I think with 11.5 I just used the dimension to tell me how far I was off and used the move command. So long ago, can't remember. And when you're done your plan is dimensioned too.

Hey JM, I'm an Architect too doing exactly what you say you're doing. I use PC though. VW works very well for me and provides all that one needs to document a job. Take advantage of all the 3d capabilities because once you understand it it makes life easier. I too used ACAD for many, many years since version 1 so learning VW was a challenge but the logic of the structure makes more sense than ACAD. Like the others said, it's flexible. It works like all the other programs like Illustrator, no need for it because VW can do it. There are some, not many, great add on's like ACAD has to make the program really shine. Remember though, it's not the Mercedes of programs. There are limitations just like all other programs but it gives you what you need. I constantly get complements on the quality of the drawings. Good Luck and give it a try.

In the organization palette, find classes, find Roof Main, select it, find roofs and set the texture to what you want. Need renderworks though and the roof needs to be on the mod-roof layer and in roof-main class. Also you can select the roof and in the object info pallet to the right, sect texture and set it. if no renderworks I believe you can set the color via the attributes palette.

I use hvac vertical duct tool. elbows are hvac elbows. For symplisity I made a symbol for downspouts (leaders) and for gutters I made a symbol and use extrude along path. Works great.

Suggestion, in 2013 when using the measure tool in a front, left, right or back view of a model, be certain to set the Active plane window at the top tool bar to "Screen Aligned" Hope this helps

Real simple, Draw 1st level plan Draw roof on Roof-1 level Draw upper level (Attic) on Level-2 Set to level-2, turn on Roof-1, extend walls to underside of roof-1. If upper level extends through roof, UN-group roof, draw polygon around area to clip, select roof faces and polygon, clip. in view ports turn layers on you want to see. If you need to see roof below, add lines to class for roof. make sure your levels are correct for model to work. remember drafting? forget section viewports for fancy graphics. use only for sections.

I see that possible with VW. All the raw stuff is there, it just needs a finesse or UI that makes the data easy to see. The reason I asked is that some folks, or blokes see BIM as only a 3d model generation process (tools for example)and no info involved. VW is a 3d program, and can do a great deal. I am concerned though about file sharing, as apposed to info sharing. VW allows for export to IFC programs for clash detection, which makes collaboration possible, so why is it not a BIM program?

Forget postscript files, Create viewport, set as you wish to see, export "image file" to png or jpg. done. Just remember the resolution determines quality.

I'm surprised no one answered your question. Slabs: draw four walls closed, chose slab from tool set, select slab type. on top bar menu of working window you'll see a check mark, hand, some lines with red dot buttons and a tool setting button. pick the hand, select all four walls and press the check mark. Your floor is made. If you want to edit the floor choose the tool setting button for slabs and on the floor frame item select "Edit" and you'll see "edge offset" this setting is the offset of the floor edge. If it is "0" then it won't offset. Experiment with different styles and you'll get the hang of it. Just remember when saving the changes always choose "save preferences" button first.
