how do i change the attributes of a design layer so that just that layer appears in black and white, which allows me to draw over it in colour in another design layer??

I want to reference in a drawing which has various classes with different colour attributes. However, once referenced in i want to convert it to black and white, but without disrupting the class settings or the entire document?? Any ideas? Cheers, Farley
