  1. bc you could convert the roadway to a mesh object then just manipulate the vertices give that a try dude again needs a little trial and error probably best to keep the road as small as possible at the point where you want to join once finished manipulating you could then convert to 3d poly otherwise if you have mesh smoothing enabled it could distort the look of the road
  2. Thanks for that. i have discovered that if you make a nurbs roadway and then convert it to a mesh you can then adjust the vertices to whatever width you need. when you do convert it though it will join the ends of the roadway together , just ignore this . once youve got the shape you want convert the whole thing to 3d polys and ungroup then you can delete the extra 3d poly that was created from the mesh conversion. and hey presto you have a road that narrows in the middle. and if you need to join to two roads in a y section just pick on the two sections that you want to join convert them to lines and the just extrude the lines and then just do solid addition on the two extrudes and hey presto a road that narrows and has a y section. bit long winded i know but it works think i might to get a life me.
  3. here here jet how do join to roads i too have a fairly large (no extremely large) model with several roads in it and i am struggling to join them together or to even vary the width of them i would like to be able to generate an arial movie of the model but cannot have huge gaps in the roads and roads that dont join another at 90 degrees (a right angle) dont not have square ends i am using architect but landscape is here in the office on another computer
  4. could i get some help with nurbs roadways or any kind of roadway actually here in the uk there is no such thing as a straight road (unless your driving up to the queens house) is there a way of joining roads together i need to create a fork in the road (a 'y' junction) but cant seem to work it out. also how do you change the width of a road ,so that it starts at one width, changes to another and then possibly changes to another at the end we also have roundabouts here ??? any help with these. i have tried to create a road by the loft command but it always goes wrong ... road twists or is larger than u want.... any tips please
  5. cant seem to get this image up so ill describe it instead its just a disc sitting the corner of a room which is made up of floor and two walls walls have texture added and floor does to disc is quite complex it is basically an ellipse with text through it and a rim around the outside i created it in solidworks and imported as an iges file and it is made up completely of nurbs surfaces hope this helps when i try to put the image up it asks me for a url does this mean the file path or does the image need to be on a website somewhere ok think it does need to be on website so i will put it up on my website tonite and link to it lights there is 1 point light 1 spot light and 2 directional lights in the scene floor has a shiny surface to it so that the disc is reflecting in it the disc itself is pretty much made up entirely of arcs 1gb of memory seems to be ok when i generate renderings it doesnt seem to use anymore than 3/4 of the 1gb cpu meter goes up to 100% when the image appears , but otherwise seems fine
  6. yes it definitely is complex cant post an image cos i'm bound by confidentiality at the moment on this job but yes it is complex. maybe i'll do some tests on some simple extrudes first to see what happens. thanks. i do have a model of a logo that im doin though at home for a friend so ill post an image of that up tonight when i get home. how do you post images up
  7. I thought so, im running the computers that are stated above but here they again:- laptop with 1.66 ghz core duo with 2 gb ram ATI Radeon X14OO running on windows XP and using vectorworks 12.5.0 i-mac 2.0 ghz core duo with 1 gb of ram (intel based) ATI Radeon 2400 XT 128MB Ram running on OSX 10.4 and using vectorworks 12.5.0 even using fast radiosity seems to take several hours (again i have to leave it running over night if you or anyone else could help me please Alan
  8. Could someone help me please I've been trying to generate some images using radiosity. Is it just me or does this take forever. When i say forever i mean i have a 4mb file with an object in it and about 5 lights and it is going to take about a week to achieve 60% radiosity setting. I'm doing this radiosity image at home on my desktop which has a 2ghz proccessor with 500 mb of ram (which i know will be slow), but i do have a laptop with 1.6 ghz core duo with 2 gb ram If it does take forever .... WHY?? Is it the lights, the textures or the shaders which makes it take so long, or does it really just take forever. Can anyone please help with any tips or tricks or settings or even plugin or vectorscript, because at the age of 38, i fear i do not have enough time left to embark on a trial and error exercise Alan at work on an i-mac 2.0 ghz core duo with 1 gb of ram (intel based which i have read is up to 3 to 6 times faster than the older macs ps they take forever here at work also i leave them running overnite but they are never finished in the morning (like no where near it).
  9. ok im running vw 12.5.1 would the post be under 'stacked viewports' Alan found it 'sketch-up style rendering
  10. any chance of a pic of where this background render button is ive got a viewport open of my model and the only button i see under render settings is RW Background and there is no option there to do hidden line rendering, only to select what background i want im using a pc at the moment by the way. but i do use a mac at work alan
  11. Hi was reading your thread and was wandering how you do that. cant seem to find any hidden line option in the background render button Alan
  12. hi just wandering if some one could help me. ive been having trouble with memory issues and was wandering what the size of the vector-works cache was and whether it could be set higher, or whether i can switch to the computers memory cache. i am using a 2ghz dual core processor and 1gb of memory in an i-mac and would like to get the max possible performance of the machine memory wise as the models that im creating are getting quite complex and speed is becoming an issue alan also maybe how i get the most out of my imac aswell

  14. hi thanks for that. seems i just had to set site model as a solid mesh after all problem i got now is the positioning of the texture i dont seem to have any control over where the image sits on the model last week when i applied the texture it sat fine placing the bottom right corner of the texture in the bottom corner of the site model but now it sits in the sits the bottom right corner of the texture in the center of the image and off to an angle. the angle is not a problem but how do i change the position of the image alan vectorworks 12.5.0 19" i-mac 2.0ghz 1gb mac os 10.4 architect and renderworks
  15. could someone help me please. ive been trying to apply textures to a site model that ive created and i am having some very unexpected and random results. sometimes the model renders fine and sometimes it doesnt. when i apply a site modifier to the model it will not apply the texture at all. i have a model, that, as it stands works fine and i can apply the texture but it is slightly the wrong shape and needs some extra contours put in to get it right . when i put these in and regenerate the model i can no longer apply the texture. i say no longer apply but i mean the texture goes on but it is all broken up questions ? is it possible to apply textures to site models? is it possible to apply textures to site models when a site modifier is applied? is it possible to convert a site model to a solid object to make it less complex and therefore power hungry? i am working with an imac 2.0 ghz duo core with 1 gb of ram could this be the problem? and if so what is recommended? ive tried to reduce the image file to a size that can be imported and that doesnt seem to work either Alan
  16. i dont have 2008 only 12.5. but thanks anyway.
  17. Hi just wandering if someone could help me out im trying to create a template in vectorworks for our practice. i come from using autocad so i am finding this a bit difficult im trying to create a template so that when i open a new sheetlayer that it contains a title block already to be filled out. obviously coming from autocad im not sure if im looking in the right direction is this possible to do in vectorworks and if so ....how? all help is appreciated alan
  18. what i mean by altering themselves is that i put the modifier in to the model and give it an elevation and then some times when i then update it will change the elevation and therefore create a huge whole in the ground and the building that the modifier is for just sits in thin air. and by collapse i mean (apart from continually crashing), that sometimes it decides just go completely wrong..... ???? i find that one difficult to explain myself.... it seems to bring in other elements of the model (ie contours) into the modifier and distorts it what im really after is a a nice simple way to create these models Alan
  19. i need a little help on site modeling. I'm having problems with the stability of my model. The site modifiers keep altering themselves whenever I seem to update. I created some contours and inserted some buildings and roads and now for some reason it just seems to collapse when i update. Any suggestions please. Alan.
  20. oh and also how do you join two roads together
  21. hi robert yes that is exactly what i am looking for .... but i do not have landmark only architect is this possible in architect why can i do what i want with a straight road but not a nurbs road i make the nurbs road , create it with a pad and a fence but the pad does not cut into the model this is so frustrating ... i have actually been stuck on this for about two months now please help me alan
  22. please can someone help me. i have been trying to insert a nubs roadway into my drawing since, oooh it feels like since 1986, but anyway back to the real world i just want to put a roadway into my flaming model can some one please help me i dont want much all i want is for the road to sit in my model and where the road is higher than the terrain for it to fill in the gaps and where the road is lower than the terrain for it to make a cut out FIRST is this actually possible (cos i dont think it is) i have been struggling with this program since day one and i just cant take any more the randomness is to much i have been trying to create two models one with existing terrain and one with proposed (and dont tell me that it does this in one model because if your overlaying site-modifiers it doesnt) i read today that i need to go through the model set up and create standard viewports to be able to create the model ... i did this and it worked do i need to do the same to insert nurbs roadways please please help this program so they tell me is 'intuitive' RANDOM AND TEMPERAMENTAL if you ask me am i alone here
