  1. I am having a bit of an issue. I have a drawing that I set up cameras to see some views of my set design form the audience prospective. I inserted lighting (about 10 total) and created a sheet layer viewport that one of the cameras is linked to. Did a couple of test renders with fast Renderworks and it looked great. I made some adjustments did another test with fast Renderworks and still looked good. Then I rand a final quality render and I thought it was ok. I then when to explore doing a second render with some different setting copied the viewport and opened the visualization pallet and when I clicked selected viewport no lights are listed. It is the same for the original viewport. I ran some other renders and then noted it is just rendering with default lighting no matter what render setting I use for the viewport. Changing the camera render setting doesn’t seem to help. I created a new camera in the same position. In the design layer it looks great and when I first created a sheet layer view port It renders as expected and I can see the lights in the visualization pallet. But at some point I when edit or adding lights I lose the list of lights for the viewport and it renders in default lighting.

  2. I don't think you can get you second request, at least not easily...

When you say each drawing is in a SLVP, what do you mean? Did you draw each in the VP or did you draw them on the Design Layers and then make viewports of them?

    Pat,

Thanks for the help I did get the totals to work. As to your last question. Each flat is drawing on the Design Layer and then yes I made viewports on the sheet layer that shows them.

  3. Hi all,

I am currently working on a project and trying to learn VW. What I am having problems figuring out is how to create a worksheet that will report all the instances of a given symbol. I have several drawings, each in there own sheet layor viewport, of stock flats and I want to report of all the corner blocks and keystones symbols used. These items are symbols.

I get that it involves creating a worksheet, but following the information in the manual isn't producing the results I would expect. I am getting a database that shows all of the symbols in the file.

At this point I would settle for a total count for each instance of the symbols, but if I could get a count of each instance sorted via each sheet layor viewport, thus getting a cut list, that would be grand.

Any help or pointing in the direction of help files would be most welcome.

    Thanks,

Rob Jensen (go eazy on my I am a AutoCAD user making the switch to VW  )

  4. Hello,

I am the TD for a small MN college and am having difficulty getting started using VW Spotlight.

I have a extensive background in AutoCAD and the college that I work for has Spotlight v12. I was not part of picking the program, it was here when I got the job. I am just now starting the processes of learning this program, so that I can offer advice about both AutoCAD and VW to students.

Can anyone give me advice on the best way to go about learning to use the program. I have tried twice now to plod my way through the manuals but I keep getting lost. It is kind of embarrassing give that I am not a CAD novice. Are there good starter books I should be looking for? I am not willing to just give up and say AutoCAD is better, I don't think that. I am just frustrated that it is not as intuitive to learn as AutoCAD was. I don't think it is because I am not thinking outside the box, but it is possible that I am set in my ways and just not seeing the forest for the trees. When I started to learn AutoCAD I found a great book that took me through the basics and worked my way up. 2D is currently the most important but eventually I want to work in 3D as well. Any advice would be most welcome.
